What's The Connection? Red 1

Part of the series of Color connections I have a couple in a row about the color Red. This is part 1. Although I already had Red Light and also Red Hot about a week ago (on the 17th and 18th). While I was making those I came up with so many Red songs. Surprisingly not as many as I thought would be there about Red Commies. So these next two are my favorites out of the bunch. And Yes, of course, there is Sammy Hagar AND King Crimson. And sorry, I did have to put both the Pharaohs and Bowling For Soup. I couldn't decide.

Jimi Hendrix Covered 2

Continued from yesterday, this pick has covers of Jimi Hendrix as the connection. I would have guessed a different song being the most popular Hendrix song to cover. And maybe I am wrong. I'm sure there is a way to check, but I am too lazy to do it right now. But informally based on these two days it is Purple Haze. Great song, but the most popular? I don't know. I do know that all these versions are pretty darn good.

Jimi Hendrix Covered 1

It would not be too hard to do an endless number of picks of songs of people covering Jimi Hendrix. I already did the Jimi covers. Songs that he covered. I liked it and some of you did too. This is other artists that covered Jimi. There are tons of tribute albums that have people do a Jimi song and some are on here. I picked my favorites for one reason or another. See if you agree. There will be at least two volumes of this (and maybe a third, but I am deciding on the contents of the third right now). The case covers are very, very similar.

Major Tom 2

Part 2 of the Astronaut themed pick I call Major Tom. Who is the astronaut in David Bowie's songs. Part three of that series is on here. A couple of days ago, was part 1, so scroll down to get that one if you haven't gotten it yet. This one covers most of the Astronaut songs, a couple of Elton John covers. Even an extra Bowie that is not part of Major Tom, but still space guy oriented. If you are interested in Space, there have been some major solar flares recently. Some people saw the Borealis way more southern than a long time. There was a full solar eclipse which was cool. And soon there is a once in a lifetime comet probably seeable with your naked eye coming past earth. Makes you think about Major Tom. Or that movie with Liv Tyler all teary eyed while her boyfriend and dad kill an asteroid.

Major Tom 2

21 Butthole Surfers - The Last Astronaut
22 David Byrne - Astronaut
23 David Bowie - Blackstar

What's The Connection? Machines 2

Part two of the Machines connection. This time is slightly different. I'm pretty sure there are no doubles with any of the previous ones. I did add the disco track from Chocolate Milk and the housey Alvin Cash. The rest is pretty much more rockin. From the Seeds to Daft Punk, Bowie to Hawkwind with a stop through the Fat Boys and Kraftwerk it does still run the gamut. Just songs with Machine in the title.

Major Tom 1

I was fooling around listening to Bowie and Schilling and the cover by Brix Smith and others and thingking that would make a pick outta this world Rocket Man kind of mixtape. I didn't include Blackstar, but I am sure I will in volume two which isn't ready yet, but there is enough here to satiate any fan of Major Tom. I know there have been some rumours that this isn't quite about astronauts, but instead it's about drugs. To you I say, too bad. Lots of Elton John covers, several Bowie and then some other originals in the same theme.

What's The Connection? Machines 1

This Connection is all songs with Machine in the title. There are a lot. I did do a couple of previous Disco Machine compilations and there are a couple of repeats, but that one was disco that sounded machine-like and this one has all sorts of genres. I have another coming, but in a little while. I like the Paul McCartney on this one. Also I used the Clock DVA track on my radio show: What's The Connection? back in the 80's and 90's. The John White & Gavin Bryars track is from an Obscure Records release and Gavin Bryars is the guy who also did Jesus Blood Never Fails Me (another cool track). Actually all these songs are very cool.

15 Guster - One Man Wrecking Machine

What's The Connection? Red Light

All songs in this connection with Red and Light in the title. All except or the OMD track does that mean Red Light, for OMD it means a Red Frame and White Light. Oh well, close enough. Nothing about the streets of Amsterdam, although Antwerp has a similar scene. You'll know if you go there. I like the cover with one close up of a red light and many red led lights in front of it. All I can say is if you have Last Exit and Billy Ocean, the sampling is diverse. I especially enjoy 1910 Fruitgum Company next to Todd Rundgren. If nothing else, I have a sense of humor.

What's The Connection? Red Light

01 Billy Ocean - Red Light Spells Danger

16 Chris Squire with Billy Sherwood - Red Light Ahead
17 Meat Loaf - Runnin' For The Red Light (I Gotta Life)
18 Kings Of Leon - Red Morning Light

What's The Connection? Red Hot

This connection should have contained no songs by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, except they have a Red Hot song. I sometimes wondered when they used to play it live if they had copied Fishbone. But who knows who copied who. I just heard Fishbone doing a Red Hot songs before the Chili Peppers did it. Anyway four cover versions of Billy Lee Riley's song, one from Robert Johnson. There's a few in here with the same name, but different songs. Just the way it is when it's Red Hot.

In honor of Father's Day, here is my WTC of songs with Daddy in the title. I was never called daddy (Papa was my name). I never called my father daddy either (he was always Pop or Pappie). But there are a lot of Daddy songs. Here are some of them. I did not include any Dad songs. There definitely are several of those. Some of them are pretty good too. That will have to be another year. Happy Father's Day. Statistics say you will probably have something BBQ'd, so enjoy it. And, yes, that is my dad on the cover.

UTC

There is no real rhyme or reason for this mixtape pick. But to give it a slight nod to legitimacy I called it UTC. That stands for Coordinated Universal Time. Why they didn't call it CUT, I'll never understand. But just like that dilemna this pick of songs is stuff I have wanted to use on one compilation or another, but just didn't use. Or just a song I liked that didn't fit on anything before. Or I just added it because I wanted to. The Beach Boys and Urban Dance Squad didn't make it onto Slow Poof, but I liked then. The Beatles and the Beach Boys cover I just liked. Harry Nilsson kind of fit in. Michael Franks might show up on a camera comp later. Several of the lounge and exotica tracks, as well as the new wave tracks I just wanted to add to round it out. I'm sticking with that time line, even if I am off by three seconds.

18 Negativland - Time Zones

Slow Poof 2

More of the Slow Poof pick. Pop Ambient? Chill? Ambient Wave? I have no idea what to classify these, but I like it. There's what some people call dub on here. And some, I mean, how do you classify Radiohead? Is Thievery Corporation chill? Or is it world? What Bill Laswell track would fit in with these? All I know is I find Terrence McKenna, soothing as well as boring and interesting at the same time. How can that be? Mint Juleps was supposed to be on volume one of Slow Poof, but just missed it. Now you get it. And you get another puff ball. In slow motion.

Slow Poof 2

13 The Orb - Towers Of Dub (Original Mix)

I was working on another Slow Poof which I was about to finish (not quite done) and I came across these songs. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Not much else to say today. I guess I am having deeper thoughts (or none at all.) There are some great tracks here, though. And I kinda like the whole deep water look of the cover.

Bliksem 2 (Lightning)

Here it is part two of this pick I call Bliksem. See the first Bliksem to know why, but it's Dutch for lightning. I'm pretty sure there is one Dutch band on here, but that's not why I called it that. It has to do with the intensity of the songs. Listen and you will get it. I did put one band on here twice. And that's because I like the band and both songs are cool and match the criteria in my head. So look for the bonus track at 42. At least one track was suggested by comment on the last volume, so congrats.

Jeff Beck Pick 2 (Guest)

This part two of the Jeff Beck pick features Jeff mostly as a guest axe man. I told you yesterday about how I got interested in Jeff Beck and that I saw him live many times. Solo. With Jan Hammer. And lots of solo. Never as a guest. Too bad, I would have loved to see him in the studio playing for anyone of the following, but especially Kate Bush. Never happened. But what did happen is that he came in to eat at the restaurant I was a waiter at. Fancy place in a hotel in downtown San Jose. I recognized him and knew he was playing, but he was seated in someone else's section. I traded a couple of tables for his table (and I had to do sidework for another waiter that evening. I didn't mind. But I was too busy and too wanting to be cool that I barely acknowledged him. I didn't get an autograph. It was before cell phones, so no selfie. I just slightly gushed and then just served him as best I could while he and his dinner partner talked business. I should have done more than shake his hand, but I didn't. Darn. You probably thought it was going to be a better story. Sorry. He was cool though. And they tipped well.

Jeff Beck Pick 1

This will be a two part pick. I almost didn't do this first part, because frankly there a ton of Jeff Beck Greatest Hits or Best of collections. Get any of them and you will be happy with it. But I decided to do it, since my view on it is not quite the same. This first part is mostly from his albums (and couple from the Yardbirds). But I am not going to tell you anything about the albums, the songs, his guitar playing. Listen and look it up. I am going to say that I first knew I was listening to him was not until the mid seventies. I had heard the Yardbirds and liked them, I knew songs by Beck Bogart and Appice and I had heard the songs with Rod Stewart, But I had never consciously made the connection to Beck, until 1975-76. It was a classmate who made me listen to Wired and Blow By Blow and insisted that it was better than anything I was listening to. Either way, Sam Esposito, I owe you for leading me down this path. Ended up seeing Beck live many, many times and even meeting him. I'll tell you tomorrow.

Huh?

Out of my many mixtape picks, this one may be the most thought provoking. Because, why? Huh? Do those songs actually go together? The answer is yes. They do. A little of everything mixed to make a cocktail of music that you would not put next to each other and yet it kind of works. At least in my mind it works. I've listened to this over and over. And at least one song, but probably more than half, do not belong on here or at least not next to each other. But I love the way it sounds. I hope you listen to this one multiple times and that it grows on you like it has me. Even Pikotari. They all have a lovely strangenesss to them.

What's The Connection? Heroin 1

This connection is of songs with the word Heroin appearing in the title. Not too difficult. I'll have to post songs "about" Heroin later. There are plenty. If I didn't hate needles so much, this could have been a problem for me when I was younger. Luckily I do hate needles. Heroin, I can't say I do, but I've stayed away as much as possible. After all these years, there still is no song that conveys this drug better than the Velvet Underground.

Revelio

This compilation is really about my pick of Neofolk. I've been fascinated with it since I discovered Death In June. Which I got for the more industrial sounding songs. But they had complete albums that were anything but. It grew on me and I branched off. This is my first pick of the litter. I called it Revelio because that's a spell in one of the Harry Potter books and it's about uncovering the truth. Seeing what you didn't see before. To me Neofolk is acoustic instruments and a measure of darkness. You tell me if I hit the mark or not.

Revelio

01 Olam Ein Sof - The Arrival
02 Tenhi - Tenhi

Ése

I have been listening to quite a bit of the band War and was thinking of other songs that fit with them and came up with this "Mixtape" pick. You could put this into a Cinco De Mayo party or mix it with any of my Exitos compilations. But I decided it should just be in the mixtape category. I sort of viewed it like Wah? or WTF?! or Hit The Spot or even Feel Like It. It has two War related tracks that fit in, but also some lesser known bands mixed in with the Santana, Mandrill, Tower Of Power and Malo. One of the ones that I really think fits in is Southern California's Mestizo Beat. But try finding their recordings. Impossible. But they are cool and some label should put their stuff out. I lived in Canoga for awhile so that hits me close. By the way, for those of you who don't know the title (Ése) is sort of slang for "Dude" so that struck me as a great title for this.

War Family Pick

I had been listening to quite a bit of the band War when I made this pick. Lots of great artists in this band, but only three recorded anything outside of the band. So I split it up. Some of each. Eric Burdon was the lead singer for a year or so and he had some great hits. In fact the two biggest with War are included here. He also was in the Animals and on his own. Some of my favorites on here. Lee Oskar was the first in the band to have a solo album. His one hit off that is on here, plus a few others I really like from the solo stuff he put out. You can hear his harmonica sounds. Lonnie Jordan, vocals and keys, had three solo albums and an appearance on a tribute album. I have tracks from each. He didn't have any "hits" but there are some that should have been. They are good. Either way it's a great companion collection to all of the other stuff War put out. Go to Butterboy's amazing site and listen to their entire discography. If you have only heard the hits, do yourself a favor and listen to the Good Stuff.

Clash Of The Titans 8 (Repost)

This is the last of this series, probably. This pick is a little different than the others, because in addition to all of the other vague descriptions of electroclash, all of this pick is covers. And one mashup. Some great songs are covered here. You probably will figure out the originals of each (if not ask in the comments). You know I love covers of songs, especially if they are done in a little different style. Well here you go. The last of the Clash Of The Titans series and also all covers. Lots of different mixes, nearly the same cover.

Clash Of The Titans 7 (Repost)

After the repost of this pick there is only one more to go, So if you love these comps, enjoy the last ones. If you hate them, good luck it's nearing the end. This really is a clash, even though the music all fits together, it's not really new wave, it's not really electro, it's not really disco, etc. It's a clash of all those things and house. But none of those things either. I mean could I be more vague? The pick makes sense when you listen to it.

Clash Of The Titans 6 (Repost)

A continuation of the repost of indescribable pick of Electroclash, new new wave or nouveau disco, tech pop or just dance music. Who the hell knows? It just fits together for me. This volume of the playlist has more remixes. It has a couple of more well known tracks and a couple I doubt you've heard before. Enough with the introductions, because we all know there isn't anything that will make it understandable except to listen to it.
