What's The Connection? Shut Up

This connection is about shutting up, not talking, keeping quiet. It's not too far fetched that there are a lot of songs about that topic. In general people tend to talk too much (including me) so finding songs about keeping quiet was very satisfying. Some of my favorites are on this list. Zappa suggests another activity, The Fall and The Stranglers just say no. Joe Dolce wants your whole face to keep quiet. Pearl Harbour wants you to dance, Joe Pop -O- Pie wants you to listen, Julie Brown wants you to kiss her, Consolidated wants you to play music and Ice-T via Jello Biafra wants you to be happy. All great suggestions! Negativland, who more people need to know, is asking nicely and the Buzzcocks just say it is annoying if you don't. All of them amuse me to no end. Enjoy them all! Especially the cover!

What's The Connection? Route 66

I understand that this connection is horribly inadequate. There are way too many version of Route 66 or about Route 66 to really do this justice. But these are the main ones I have. I even put the Eagles and Jackson Browne in because it was about Route 66. Nat King Cole will always be my definitive but I must say that Depeche Mode has caught my ears in recent times with their version. I especially like the mashup version with their other hit. I first heard it on a single and I have loved it ever since. If you have another great version I didn't bring up on this list please leave it in the comments. I would love to hear it. Great song! I traveled along Route 66 before and it was very fun, even if it doesn't actually go all the way through any longer, the historic route is there. I stood on the corner in Winslow, Arizona and it was a site to see. I recommend that everyone do it at least once.

What's The Connection? Planes

So many of these songs were at one time or another the spark for trying to make this connection. So I can't say that one song or another got me to finally put this together. Each one of them at one point or another was the inspiration. But the final piece that got it going was hearing Chantel Kreviazuk cover John Denver on the Armageddon Soundtrack. I thought it was quite good and it reminded me of the other times I was thinking of making a compilation of songs about planes. For me, Eno and 801 (Ray Manzarek, Eno, etc) had always had great songs about planes. The Three O'Clock with their 80's version of psychedelic music, up through the Hawaiian comedy of Rap Reiplinger (brilliantly funny guy who unfortunately is dead, but get his albums anyway.) This has quite the variety and is better for it.

What's The Connection? Moving

I put this together when we were moving from California to Texas. Great move btw. It had to have Kate Bush. That was first for this connection. Even though it was not about moving house, but just not being still. In fact most of the songs here have moving in the title, but are more about not being still than packing a house up and putting things in boxes. But that's okay a couple are and the rest are just great songs. Tell me what songs you would want played as you were moving towards a new start.

What's The Connection? Old 2

I was going to say something dumb, like I can't remember what volume this was, as if I was too old to remember, but I didn't think it was appropriate. Especially becuase this volume of getting old is a connection at least partially of death and dying. We all come up to it eventually. And make our peace with it one way or another. It's part of getting old. And partially when we get devastating news, like getting a disease so you may not get much older. I was diagnosed with cancer, which if you scanned the qr code from a couple days ago, you know. But I have always known I would die an old man, perhaps from a disease like cancer or perhaps being shot by a jealous husband or perhaps, just getting old. Either way it is a good selection of songs that are compatible with volume one in my mind. And I hope you play them until you die, may that day be a long ways away.

What's The Connection? Old 1

I started this one a few years back when I was about to turn 60, I have since redone this connection a few times, depending on the audience and the person getting old to provide music for birthday parties. Almost everyone was as old as me. I removed a few from this list and added others, but this is the original. Take what you want from volume 1 (add from volume 2, if you want), add a birthday song and then favorites of the old birthday person. This one has old songs for ladies and men and most of us can identify with at least a few of theses states. If you can't connect, you are not old enough. Have a sense of humour about this.

What's The Connection? Mountains

There probably should be multiple volumes of songs with Mountain in the title, but I only have one volume of this connection. I should make more, but I haven't yet. I made this around the time of Kate Bush's alnum that included her mountain song, but lots of older mountains to climb here. One of my favorites besides Bush, is Neil Young. Used to sing that a lot. I also have to say that Joe Walsh, Jane Wiedlin and Budgie are up there as favorites. Not that the rest are bad, they are all great songs and have a place in my heart. Tell me your favorites, whether they are on this connection or not. If they aren't on this list maybe I will start climbing for another volume. Inspire me.

What's The Connection? Medical Personnel

Mostly about Doctors and Nurses I called it medical personnel so I covered my basis. I had a nurse song that had to go in, one pharmacist song (a cover, but a great cover) that had to be in there and two surgeon songs which is technically also a doctor song (although one is about the girl of a surgeon, so maybe not, but I love the song and the band. The Killer Pussy song is what made me decide to make the connection, even though that is the outlier song. In fact, the song from the Fall was my second thought. Then all the rest. It was during covid that I decided to actually put it together. I have a few that are made during that time. It was difficult since I had some medical issues including multiple surgeries and finding that I have cancer. I will live so don't feel bad yet. But I will put a QR code in at the bottom if you want to know more.

What's The Connection? Hotdogs

It's that time of year when people eat hotdogs and this connection celebrates that with a great pick of Hot Dog songs. The songs all have Hot Dog in the title, except for the two commercials which just have dog in the title. The last one is not even about Hot Dogs, but it still kind of fits, because you could use the jingle to talk about hot dogs instead of dog food. Although I would not suggest that Ken-L Ration is good food for dogs. In fact I bet there are some hot dogs that have more beef than Ken L Ration. I could be wrong. Some of these songs are not about the food we eat in summertime, but rather just an expression of joy. I didn't make the distinction. Leave it to say that I do love a good Hebrew National hot dog (and even some of the no name brands) and not just because they report to a higher power. Either way enjoy these songs this summer.

What's The Connection? Horses 2

Okay this is interesting as a connection continuation. Volume two of the horses WTC. But this one, unlike volume 1 which had all songs with Horse in the title (except for one), has no songs with horse in the title (except for one). Rather they are all songs about ponies and saddles. Like volume one, which had one song about a particular type of horse, this volume also has one song about a type of horse. So completely different, and yet quite similar. I just can't help it. Colourbox has such a good Horse song, but it didn't fit on volume one, so I had to figure out how to make it work this time. Someday look up the David Christie song, it's pretty interesting. The guy is worth looking up as well as his other songs, but too long to get into here.

What's The Connection? Horses 1

My daughter liked horses, but I think she liked trucks and big machinery better as a little girl. We would go to farms and look at horses, but she seemed to notice the tractors as much. So I was spared the cost of horseback riding lessons and feeding and caring for a horse. But that did not mean that horses were not in my future as these horse songs will show. All except for the last one in this connection have Horse in the title. Lots of bands have songs about horses. I will show more tomorrow from a different angle. So many of these songs are really good ones that I really enjoy listening to. The KMFDM song I first found as a b-side to another hit, but I loved it. Prefab Sprout is just one of my favorites and who doesn't like Echo & The Bunnymen?

What's The Connection? Heaven 2

Continuing on the connection of Heaven songs, here's volume 2. A few of my favorite Heaven songs are in this volume. Death In June, who many people do not seem to know unfortunately, is one of those. Two others who have heaven songs that when they came out, I could not stop listening to. Yes and Robyn HItchcock & the Egyptians.. The first almost an exercise in vocals and recording techniques and the latter not long after I had discovered the Soft Boys (late, I'm sure). I had the album and the twelve inches and could not stop listening to them. The rest filled out by other tracks I liked and owned. I started this connection because I was doing graphics and marketing for a massage place with heaven in the title. Now is your chance to leave in the comments your choices of heaven songs that I missed.

Millions upon millions of songs include the word Heaven in the title. This connection is my volume one of Heaven songs. Rock to new wave, disco to metal. Hard to dislike a heaven song. All of them are songs I love and own (like usual). Include your favorite songs about heaven in the comments, but perhaps wait until tomorrow when I have part two.

What Is The Connection? Hair

This connection is all about hair. People get extremely excited about hair. Upset if it isn't cut or styled just right. I have this belief that it is "only hair" and it doesn't make that much of a difference. No matter what you do to it, color it, cut it, style it, it doesn't matter because in almost every case, it will grow back. I have had my hair shaved, colored, whacked off, grown past my butt, in conservative cuts and in some completely radical cuts. People do stare (even today) at some of the more wild ones, but mostly they are okay with it. You do get pulled over by the police more with a mohawk than a crew cut, but if you are polite, it doesn't matter much for most. Every now and again the exception comes true, but not as a rule. And yes, I like that movie South Pacific. What all this has to do with this Connection is probably nothing.

What's The Connection? Ghost Riders In The Sky

I can't say that I heard Marty Robbins first. or even second. My first real recollection of hearing the song came from the Outlaws. The perhaps Johnny Cash or Dean Martin and the Baja Marimba Band. A couple of versions on here I didn't even remember having. Fred Penner I knew because I listened to a lot of Penner when my daughter was growing up (I probably heard Sandwiches and Cat Comes back a million times), But some of the others I hadn't listened to for some while until I put them on this connection. Not that they aren't great version each in their own way. Ghost Riders In The Sky is a brilliant song, but until the Nick Cage movie, I doubt many people had a use for a compilation with all these versions. And what's funny is there are way more I could have used. But these will have to do for now.

What's The Connection? Happy 1

When Pharrel came out with his Happy hit, I started thinking of some of my favorite Happy songs. This connection is those songs. All songs with Happy in the title, but not the Pharrel hit. If you leave some suggestions in the comments for more songs, then maybe I'll make that into volume 2 and this time include the big hit. I'm not going to talk about any band or song except for the Cosmopolitans. They didn't do much, but were friends with Mitch Easter and Chris Stamey. All girl band. All of which is not important to my story. I found the 45 and had to buy it immediately as soon as I saw it. What's completely coincidental is that the song on here is based on an exercise record by Debbie Drake. I only own a couple of exercise LP's but that happens to be one of the ones I own. I found it in a thrift store, specifically a Goodwill and thought it sounded hilarious. The cover was so out of touch with "today" (back then) that it made me laugh. When I saw that the Cosmopolitans had a track of the same name. I had to get it. And sure enough they were related. Everything they sing is stuff Debbie Drake has on her list. Made me happy.

Busta Jones Pick

This is late coming, but a continuation of the Talking Heads family pick. This pick is Busta Jones. He played on the Remain In Light Tour, but doesn't seem to make it onto any of the studio recordings as far as I can tell. But he is pretty essential on the tour and is on the live record. Best part of his pick is that he also played with Chris Spedding, Brian Eno and Robert Fripp. So the quality of his pick is pretty good. I included some solo work and some of the other bands he was in. Not much more to say, except that the Bombers track is really long, but way cool, even before you know that Busta Jones is on it.

What's The Connection? Fantasy 1

It was inevitable that this What's The Connection? would be picked. If only for the Earth Wind & Fire song, it was a topic I liked. Aldo Nova and that sealed the deal. Many people do not know the Japanese band Ippu Du. It was an early 80's band with member singer/guitarist Masami Tsuchiya. They had some cool records and he had a several great solo albums, as well as guesting on several albums with Japan and their members among other bands. Definitely look for Rice Music of his solo and any of the first three or four Ippu Du albums. Mostly in Japanese, but such a great sound. The song I used here was the title track from the third album from 1981.

What's The Connection? Sim Sala Bim

Sim Sala Bim or Abracadabra are the words we use to perform magic. They are magical words. I heard them often when my Uncle used to visit. He was a magician. Kinda famous. And our family is part of the lineage of the Bamberg's. Doesn't mean anything unless you know and follow magic. Me, I'm a magician with the turntable, that's it. So coming up with magic songs for a connection was fun for me. I am sure I missed many, but you will straighten me out about those. I don't know of any songs with Sim Sala Bim in the title, but Hocus Pocus? Yes. Abracadabra? Yes. The rest are all just Magical.

What Is The Connection? Dancing 1

This is one of those easy and yet fun ones. The hardest part is leaving songs out. But you have to make the choices. These are obviously songs with Dancing in the title. Many are Discosongs, but not all. I have some new wave, some rock etc all in here. Reflects my tastes at the time of compiling this connection. Most people have heard of Billy Idol and some have heard his earlier band Generation X. More punk until this song and then he went more new wave right after this. He's released this as Billy Idol later, but even just using the name Generation X is better. Disco Tex is aband that probably wouldn't be allowed to exist nowadays (even though this song is tame compared to some he sang.)  Tell me which Dancin' dongs you would have picked instead of these.

What Is The Connection? Dancing 1

01 The Kinks - Come Dancing
02 Led Zeppelin - Dancing Days
03 Generation X - Dancing With Myself
04 Leo Sayer - You Make Me Feel Like Dancing

What Is The Connection? Do The

This should make sense, especially after yesterday's post. All songs that have Do The [Blank] in the title. Even though I am posting it after yesterday's Connection, I made this one much earlier. I just forgot about it until I posted the Work It comp. One of my favorites on this collection is The Jazz Butcher song. It's just weird enough to be right in my wheelhouse. The Other one is Little Nell. I'm not certain where it was first released, but I used the version on a Rocky Horror Picture Show multiple CD soundtrack. It was a bonus track and it sounds so normal. Peace, Love + Pitbulls is a band I don't know that much about. I first heard a track in very early 90's. They were Dutch and Swedish and they had a great industrial-dance kind of feel that I really liked. Can't tell you much else about them. But great tracks including this one.

What Is The Connection? Do The

01 Stranglers - Do The European
02 A Certain Ratio - Do The Du
03 The Three Johns - Do The Square Thing

20 Tim Curry - Do The Rock

What's The Connection? Work It

It's not quite "work" it. Probably more like Blank It or maybe Do It. This What Is The Connection is all songs with titles that have something action It. Kinda fun to come up with. I'm no English major, but I believe this is a transitive verb followed by the pronoun "It". If that's correct, I thank all my English teachers, especially Mr. Rale in high school. If I am wrong, then blame my memory. Either way this was fun to do. I was actually working on another compilation when I did this one. It was a Workout compilation, hence the Work It title. Just where my headspace was. Notice that the first track is not a whole track, but just a sample of Tone Loc.

What's The Connection? Work It

01 Tone Loc Efx - Let's Do It
02 Limbomaniacs - Shake It

Gospel Brunch

Sometime in the 90's, I put this pick together. One of my most favorite Steve Martin movies is Leap Of Faith. Brilliant movie and it had great music in it. It reminded me of a few other tracks by the Violent Femmes (and the Mercy Seat - Gordon Gano). Throw in some music from Sister Act (also from 1992) and a couple I figured would be perfect with them and this compilation came together. The name came from a gospel show that the House of Blues put together (a great show). I saw it in several cities and it was always top grade. Music and food! I am sure that there are other people that know this music inside and out who could leave a great number of suggestions in the comments, but I am at my limit here. Uptempo gospel that makes me want to stand up and clap and dance from not all gospel bands. I'd love to know more. I think it would be hard to top this one, but I would love to be wrong.

What Is The Connection? Crazy

This connection is all about crazy songs. I did not use songs where they were Mad, even though Mad can mean Crazy in the UK. In fact the Toy Dolls have a great song about being crazy called We're Mad. These are not all about a person being crazy, there are beats and minds and love and much more that can be crazy, but in general all that stuff drives people crazy, too. The Wall Of Voodoo track was quite good, but just did not get enough recognition, which probably drove the band crazy. It was a good album, if lacking the elephant in the room. Billy Joel is the only one who doesn't have a track with Crazy in the title, but we all know why. This will drive you crazy. There is a special order of these songs and it isn't BPM. I won't say what it is, but you can guess.

What Is The Connection? Crazy

01 Billy Joel - You May Be Right
02 Heart - Crazy On You
03 Wall Of Voodoo - Far Side Of Crazy
04 Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love

What's The Connection? Boobies

So much nicer than just Tits or Boobs. This connection is about women's breasts. Doesn't matter how you say it, most people like them. Male or female. I love the Rodney Carrington song, because he says it best. It doesn't matter if they are big or small, male or female, they are all great (I paraphrase). People have been singing about them for all time. I have early "hits" from Ruth Wallis and Rusty Warren on here to the Black Eyed Peas (which can be considered both a song about the front humps as well as the back humps.) I always remember the Stranglers song (and yes it reminds me specifically of sets I really liked both in High School and College and after). I won't mention names. But I do think of them fondly. Sure there are those will say that I am a pig and I will accept that label in this instance. I just know what I like and I am not ashamed to say it. I especially would love it if you have a song that fits this What's The Connection and leave it in the comments.

This is just my first shot at my favorite better songs. Eventually I will make another one. For now this is it. Leave comments about better, better songs. One of my favorites of the whole shebang is Was (Not Was). I love the whole premise. Obscure Gospel 2

Side two of this cassette pick from way long ago. I had probably recently gotten the BEF album, and I really liked it. I mixed in old and new songs, but even the new songs had an older feel. BEF fell right into that mold. I added another surf song and a couple of new wave (robotic songs), an oldie and even one Canadian "rock" band. Harlequin was on one of those label only samplers and I really liked the track. So it got put on the cassette. Originally the cassette had a cover with a variety of orange, red and yellow markers making an abstract background for the cursive title I hand made. I tried to mimic that on the digital version.

Independence Day

On this Independence Day (4th of July in the USA) this pick is dedicated to the freedom of all Americans. It may not feel like it sometimes and we always have to fight for that freedom from tyranny, but it is real. These songs reflect that sometimes it doesn't feel like freedom, but it is always in the spirit of all Americans. We are currently fighting against tyranny, where authoritarians are trying to get rid of political opponents in illegal ways, but like Dan Bongino says, freedom and independence is like a beach ball. You can try to hold it underwater, but it always wants to pop back up and it will! Enjoy your 4th of July! And if you are American (or not), fight for your right to be Independent! It is a God given right, not to be trifled with by any state or country.

Obscure Gospel 1

This pick was one of my early 90's cassettes I made. Side one of that cassette to be precise. Soon you will get side two. I have no idea where the Obscure Gospel title came from. Probably to just throw people off, but I really can't remember, It's just stuff I was listening to at the time. I loved the version of Batman from the Jam. The Hawaiian band Shnazz had one great album, so I put on two tracks. The fact that the Tubes sounded so Motownish and yet so Tubes-like was great to me. The DOA track I had to buy without listening to it. For the longest time I actually played it at the wrong speed. It was a 12 inch single and I played it at 33. It was better at 45, but decent at 33. Some old songs and some newer ones as I was likely to do back then. Yes, from the amazing Drama album, surf from the Electric Firebirds, who no one (still) knows. Side one was an amazing start.

My Wedding Music 1

Today is my Anniversary. Thank you. I have two per year. This is the first one of the year and December is the second. We got married in Vegas at the Little White Wedding Chapel and then later in a Catholic church in California. That one had a big reception. You probably have guessed that I am a DJ. I have done probably close to a thousand weddings. Love them. I hired another DJ to do my wedding. I gave him four CD's. One was this pick, which we also gave to all of our guests, and that my wife and I picked together. Two of the CD's were background music for cocktails and dinner, so our DJ (and friend) could enjoy dinner. The other two included music we wished he could play, but he had free range to play anything he wanted. He was good, so we knew he would look at the crowd and play what they wanted. We only said he had to play our first dance, which we did a rhumba to. Our reception was a rager. People had to unexpectedly spend the night in a hotel. Some planned ahead. The next day we continued. Ask in the comments if you are interested in the other CD's.

Now I Know My ABC's

I made this pick some time ago. And It's kind of stupid. I was making a cassette with bands using band names or artists using every letter of the alphabet. Dumb. But I did it anyway. My rules were simple I could only use the last name of artists and articles (the, a, an, etc) didn't count in band names. Was not that hard. Mostly new wave-ish bands, but that wasn't the criteria, it just turned out that way, because that's what I was listening to at the time. So there is a theme, but not really much of one. You deserve to hear it, but don't judge me too much. What do you think of me? The original cassette had hand drawn kids blocks. I changed it a little for the CD cover, but still blue to pink.
