Merry Christmas — here’s your Xmas surf soundtrack pick. I know it's Christmas Eve day, but now you'll be ready. Growing up in sunny California, not being in snow (except for that one city block where they dumped the man-made stuff) until I was 18, surf music at Christmas was never an exception — it was just normal. This is guitar-led holiday surf music. My only regret was not finding Mele Kalikimaka in a proper surf version, but at the last minute I found a hidden track with a good bonus version. Zwarte Piet

Growing up Dutch-Indo in California, December 5th was amazing! While everyone else was waiting for Santa, I was sweating it out for that chocolate letter 'P' and dodging the sack! I found out later in life that my Opa was Zwarte Piet. He would drive an hour to get to our house, knock on the door and throw stuff inside and hide around the corner while we picked up the goodies (and then he drove home.) This playlist is basically the soundtrack to that childhood adrenaline rush of the dogs barking and the whole craziness, but reimagined with enough rock and funk to match the chaos. Let’s be honest, Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet were basically buddies in an action movie. I did try to find a rockin' version of the last song in Indonesian (which my pop taught all us boys) but I failed. This pick does kick off with the panic of that first loud knock on the door, rides the energy of the horses stomping on the roof, and gets into the gritty "coal and soot" vibe of the chimney descent. It captures that rebellious feeling of hoping you weren't too naughty, the absolute chaos when the pepernoten started flying, and finally that sweet victory of unwrapping the goods before the visitors head back to Spain. It’s loud, it’s messy, and it’s pure Pakjesavond magic.

Xmas (Christmas) Disco 3

Merry Christmas! A beautiful Christmas morning today and I am posting my pick for Xmas morning with a part three, part one of Xmas Disco came awhile ago and part 2 was just a few days ago, less than a week. Disco is a little bit of a misnomer. Some of these songs are not disco songs at all. But they are Christmas or Christmas related songs by at the minimum disco artists, if they aren't actual disco songs. The Bee Gees, for instance will always be associated with disco, but this ballady Christmas medley was done in the sixties way before they ever even thought of being involved with Saturday Night Fever. But I feel like it still could fit, so I shoved it in here. A couple of Orchestras who all seemed to join the disco craze in the 70's and made some cool Christmas medleys or full length albums segued for you ribbed dancing pleasure. I plucked out a few (leaving some for future comps) trying not to double up on songs. How many disco Sleigh Rides and White Christmases do we need on one playlist? Rhetorical. There is no snow for us this year, but it was cold and rainy Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas. Cold and sunny the day after and then just cold until today. To stay ready for the cold here is a connection of Cold songs. It's the first of what could be a lot, because there are a lot of songs about cold. We could probably do a WTC just on the song Baby, It's Cold Outside, but that will be for another year. Some fun cold songs on this volume. Happy Christmas Eve! T'was the nite before Christmas and all throughout the land there are excited girls  and boys waiting for Santa Claus to come to their house. But we also have a decent amount of people who are sad at this time of year. Someone is no longer in their lives. Or they are having a tough year this year. Hard to believe with all those great Bidenomics going on in the US at least. For those people I present this connection of Blue Christmas songs. If you are blue this Christmas, then play these blue Christmas songs (or basically the same one over and over by different people. That might be just enough to really make you blue if you weren't before. Me? I love Christmas. It's December 5th! So, for little Dutch and Indo boys and girls, it's Christmas. Happy St. Nicholas Day to you. I grew up with this being the start of Christmas. We would put out our shoes by the fireplace and hope that St Nick would come and leave us some chocolate. REPOST: I love Christmas. And I love Christmas songs. Especially the more unusual ones. It's just one of those things I collect. I started making Xmas cassettes years ago. Designing covers and giving them to family and friends . The Xmas Cookie Pol's Pick series is a copy of the first CD's I made following all of that. I hope you enjoy some of these, are offended by at least a few and hopefully there's one that you have never heard before that you end up loving like I did in this series. I'll post a few of them over the next couple of days until Christmas. I'm guessing that a few of these have not yet been in your regular Christmas song list. Unless you worked at Digi-Design when they first got started, you won't recognize, Hieronymous Johnson, for instance. He went by several names and bands in the Silicon Valley Bay Area. Some are obvious hits from the time. Enjoy them all. I especially love the Swamp Zombies, Romy and Conch because they nailed it. It is the season after all. So this connection is about songs with the title Let It Snow. I have another one, which I am tracking down that is just about Snow, but it's misfiled or something like that. So this is the one you get on Xmas Eve, well Christmas Eve. There are tons of versions of this song. I by no means have even close to all of them, but there is a good sampling of them to play during your Christmas celebration. This connection also includes the Frosty The Dopeman version that you probably heard on Dr. Demento, which for some reason I always had thought was Cheech and Chong, but wasn't. Cocteau Twins do one of my favorite versions, but I also like the Jack Frost Band which was a snowman movie on it's own right. Jimmy Durante is the best of all, but you have to like the surf versions by the Ventures and also the Beach Boys. This is one for my brother. He would play this homemade cassette in his car and at home around Christmas and it began to grow on me. So I redid it as a CD and gave it to him one year, because by then he didn't have a cassette player anymore. And it's joined my pick of Christmas songs we play each year. December 5th is Saint Nicholas day or for me the Dutch Christmas: Sinterklaas. Search Christmas or Xmas for previously posted playlists for this season. I was brought up with Sinterklaas and Zwaarte Piet. And have always loved both Christmas days. I wanted you to ge a little head start on it this year, so 5th of December it is. These songs are the more disco versions of the season. Disco from the 70's up until now.
