What's The Connection? Rose Is A Rose

This started out as one of my cassettes and eventually became this Connection. Many of the first songs were featured on a live WTC years ago. I added a few as I had already found them to make the cassette. I couldn't bear to get rid of any, so it's still over an hour and a half. Oh well. Couple of Death in June songs, the latter one on the list was added after the live show. Only one of the reggae tracks appeared on the show, but did appear on the cassette. Sometime in the future I will post my La Vie En Rose connection. It's donw, except for the cover. Maybe I will make it based on this cover. If I remember correctly, the flower came from a photo I took in my front yard rose garden years ago.

Obscure Gospel 2

Side two of this cassette pick from way long ago. I had probably recently gotten the BEF album, and I really liked it. I mixed in old and new songs, but even the new songs had an older feel. BEF fell right into that mold. I added another surf song and a couple of new wave (robotic songs), an oldie and even one Canadian "rock" band. Harlequin was on one of those label only samplers and I really liked the track. So it got put on the cassette. Originally the cassette had a cover with a variety of orange, red and yellow markers making an abstract background for the cursive title I hand made. I tried to mimic that on the digital version.

Obscure Gospel 2

Obscure Gospel 1

This pick was one of my early 90's cassettes I made. Side one of that cassette to be precise. Soon you will get side two. I have no idea where the Obscure Gospel title came from. Probably to just throw people off, but I really can't remember, It's just stuff I was listening to at the time. I loved the version of Batman from the Jam. The Hawaiian band Shnazz had one great album, so I put on two tracks. The fact that the Tubes sounded so Motownish and yet so Tubes-like was great to me. The DOA track I had to buy without listening to it. For the longest time I actually played it at the wrong speed. It was a 12 inch single and I played it at 33. It was better at 45, but decent at 33. Some old songs and some newer ones as I was likely to do back then. Yes, from the amazing Drama album, surf from the Electric Firebirds, who no one (still) knows. Side one was an amazing start.

Obscure Gospel 1

First Summer Potpourri

Imagine you recently started dating someone in college and before they leave for the summer: surprise, surprise you get an unexpected cassette thay secretly had made for you. They mail it to you so you get the pick after they have left. Whoa! That's pretty cool. This is such a cassette. I wasn't expecting it. It had really cool songs on it. Several that were new releases at the time. And it has a message. A message of longing, but still a bit unsure. Testing the waters to see if I felt the same about her as she did about me. And also wanting to impress me with her knowledge of music. It worked. I ended up driving hours and hours in a bus to go see her as soon as I could. If I wasn't as much of a simpleton, it probably could have lasted much longer. Either way it ended up lasting for years. I was smitten. This cassette was a good reason for the start of that. I still don't understand a couple of the choices, but the other 95% I totally do.

First Summer Potpourri

01 Elvis Costello - Girls Talk
02 The Inkspots - If I Didn't Care

Piece Of PZA 2

Part two of the Piece of PZA cassette. This pick of songs I really liked and that I thought this girl liked did not have the success I was hoping for. I was probably unredeemable by then. Totally my fault for the break up and even if this was a great collection of songs, there was no way it was going to bring that relationship back to life. Oh well, I was devastated for awhile, but I ended up with this pick of cool songs. Now you get the benefit of my desperate attempt to salvage something out of my emotional immaturity. I've improved, but still have a long way to go.

Piece Of PZA 2

10 Stevie Wonder - Boogie On Reggae Woman
11 Michael Jackson - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
12 Kool & The Gang - Celebration

17 Rose Royce - Do Your Dance
18 Rap Reiplinger - Loving You Is Surfing You
19 Heatwave - Sho'nuff Must Be Luv

Piece Of PZA 1

This was once a cassette. A pick for a girl. So this was side one of the 90 minute cassette. You can pretty much tell what I was listening to at the time. Early 80's soul pop funk mixed with a few seventies tracks. This was not what I would call a successful Cassette, because not too long after, she made that move away from me. I was still very smitten at the time so I always liked the playlist. Maybe it will work better for you. Either way the songs are good.

Piece Of PZA 1

01 Gap Band - Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)
02 Rick James - Give It to Me Baby
03 Prince - Let's Work

05 Donna Summer - She Works Hard For The Money
06 Earth, Wind & Fire - Magnetic

08 Shalamar - Make That Move
09 Marlena Shaw - Yu-Ma-Go Away Little Boy

Mateo's Xmas

This is one for my brother. He would play this homemade cassette in his car and at home around Christmas and it began to grow on me. So I redid it as a CD and gave it to him one year, because by then he didn't have a cassette player anymore. And it's joined my pick of Christmas songs we play each year. Now it's available for you to play as a compilation playlist in your family's celebration. Probably would pair well with the Christmas Disco playlist from a few weeks ago. I hope you like it. If you do, thank him in the comments. Mateo, here it is again.

Go For Baroque 2

Here's the other side of the cassette I started posting yesterday. Read the story of the pick in the other post. Here I will say that the cover was not originally designed by me. She designed the cassette cover. I scanned the words and used them over the notes that I found in some clipart. It was all hand drawn originally, but it didn't fit the new format. So I took what I could use and recreated the rest to make it fit. Not sure why, but I had the hardest time tracking down some of the songs on this side. I didn't have access to the original classical records she used, so I had to figure it out from the notes on the cassette, which did have some detail. And then began the tracking. Let me know what you think about these versions and tell me if you think you know some better versions I can listen to.

Go For Baroque 1

This was a cassette that an ex-college girlfriend made for me. This is side 1 of the cassette. She played violin and I knew next to nothing about classical music. She went home for the summer and we sent each other cassette compilations. She had some good ones. It took me awhile to recreate this, because I wanted to make sure I got the same sources she did for each track on her pick. I understand that the conductor and the symphony makes a real difference. I can't say if she chose these exact recordings because they happened to be in her parents' record collection or because they were her favorite versions of all time. I have no idea and it would take me years of figuring out which versions I like best. I am not that versed in classical music. Although way more than I was in the 80's. Her influence. I started making sure that at least one choice of new music per month was a classical record, So I ended up with quite a bit of that genre. Still am not the connoisseur although I work at it occasionally. Then, I sucked at being a boyfriend (too self obsessed) Probably still do, but I am more aware of it now. Either way, she did make some great compilations before she figured that out.

Black + White (CAVR Pick) 2

What I love about other people's picks is that they never pick the same songs that I would pick. It makes life interesting. Look at yesterday's post if you didn't already to find part 1 and the story of who's behind this compilation cassette. The original cassette had a black front with silver metallic writing on it. Looked pretty cool. I couldn't quite get that same look when I made it into a CD cover so, this is what you get. Still looks kinda cool. Now that you've had the chance to see both sides of the cassette. How would you have organized it? I sort of feel that a song on this side could have been traded with a song on the other to more match the Black + White theme, but I am definitely used to it in this order. Leave a comment and tell me what you think.

Black + White (CAVR Pick) 2

09 Bauhaus - Stigmata Martyr
10 Death In June - Fields

19 Marine Girls - In Love
20 Cabaret Voltaire - Photophobia
21 Tuxedomoon - Holiday For Plywood

Black + White (CAVR Pick) 1

Mostly I post my own compilations, but every now and again I post someone else's pick. This one was a cassette made by my ex-wife. Two parts to it. I post side one today and side 2 tomorrow. Yes, we still get along. Both remarried. She had full range of my album collection for years and this is one of her picks from that collection. I'm guessing this is the "white" side, since it's a little more light and happy. The darker side will be tomorrow. I hope you enjoy this. And I know, I don't usually put two songs from the same artist on the same compilation, let alone right after each other, but this is how she had the cassette. I also don't know if I would consider Tones On Tail to be on this side. How would you organize this playlist?

Black + White (CAVR Pick) 1

01 Dead Or Alive - Brand New Lover
02 ABC - When Smokey Sings
03 Bananarama - Venus
04 Tones on Tail - Twist
05 Blancmange - Don't Tell Me

Nonesuch Folk

This is an interesting story. At one time long ago, I had a family member ask me to find an old Pete Seeger album. At the time I did not have it (and hadn't even heard it) but they insisted it was a great album and they hadn't heard it in years and they couldn't find it. I offered to look for it as I was shopping around the world for records. I would occasionally look for it as I looked for new albums. It didn't take long, and I found it. Next Thanksgiving was a joyous time as we all listened to the LP. It was a decent album, not all it was made out to be. They ended up wanting it on cassette. So I recorded it for them. The tape had enough room left over to make what I picked to match or sort of match on the other side. This is mostly what I had. I added some newer tracks when I made this compilation. Since I didn't want to put a whole album on here, none of Pete Seeger is on here. Some folkish, some acoustic, some just fun stuff.

I've Been Waiting For Tomorrow All Of My Life 2

Okay, this is side two of this pick (an old cassette brought back to life) of stuff I was listening to feverishly around this time. Yes, another Frankie song (and better than the hit). A double, because they were so good. This song really got me to start looking at other ZTT albums. I already loved Art Of Noise, but had figured that sound to be only for them, but now realized that Trevor Horn had a lot to do with the sound. Two Madonna songs, Rockwell instead of Prince and, of course, Romeo Void who was too cool. I think originally Lucky Star was on side 1 with a shorter version of Relax, but when it moved to newer formats, I extended Frankie (because I could and it was great) and Madonna moved over.

I've Been Waiting For Tomorrow All Of My Life 2

09 Madonna - Lucky Star
10 Soft Cell - Torch (Extended Version)
11 Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me
12 Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes (Annihilation Mix)
13 Madonna - Borderline
14 Romeo Void (extended) - A Girl In Trouble (Is A Temporary Thing)
15 Fixx - Are We Ourselves
16 Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

I've Been Waiting For Tomorrow All Of My Life 1

This is side one of one of my old c-90 cassettes. Side 2 tomorrow. Stuff I was listening to in the 80's. I redid it as a playlist using better original sources rather than the old cassette. I was completely enthralled with Matt Johnson and The The. I would listen to it over and over again and wonder why it wasn't being played on the radio. And when I found out that (like Prince) he did most all of the album by himself, I was even more hooked. I had heard one track by him before this album. From a compilation, the song was The The (from the band The The) so I knew I wanted to hear more. I was very pleasantly surprised how good it was. Anyway that is what started me making this pick. Looking back, does Rockwell and Frankie Goes To Hollywood ever belong together? I thought so, then.

I've Been Waiting For Tomorrow All Of My Life 1

01 The The - I've Been Waitin' For Tomorrow
02 Billy Idol - Flesh for Fantasy
03 Tina Turner - What's Love Got To Do With It
04 Prince & the Revolution - Let's Go Crazy
05 Wang Chung - Wait
06 John Waite - Missing You
07 Thompson Twins - The Gap
08 Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax (Original 12 inch mix)

It's An Obsession 2

The second half of my playlist, It's An Obsession. All songs I was obsessing over in the 80's when I made the tape. I re-did it as a CD and then as a playlist. I listened to these songs and I obsessed over making tapes, so what does the title refer to? No idea. I don't know if now, I would put Billie Jean and Kissing The Pink on the same pick, but it made sense then. The cover is a recreation of the cassette label I made originally. See the first side yesterday for more of the story.

It's An Obsession 2

12 Human League - (Keep Feeling) Fascination
13 David Bowie - China Girl

20 Kissing The Pink - Watching Their Eyes
21 David Bowie - Criminal World
22 Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
23 Men Without Hats - The Great Ones Remember

It's An Obsession 1

This is another one of my old mixtape cassettes redone as a CD and then as a playlist pick. It's all just stuff I was listening to back then. Not sure of the timeline, but somewhere in the 80's is my guess. You might be able to figure it out by checking release dates of all of these, because it's probably mostly of that year. I'm also not clear on the memory of how I named this, but I was listening to these songs as if it was an obsession. Side 2 tomorrow.

It's An Obsession side 1

01 David Bowie - Let's Dance
02 Jump 'N The Saddle - The Curly Shuffle
03 Kissing The Pink - Big Man Restless

Electric Banana 2

Part two of the old cassette Electric Banana. I had some old songs and some new songs to surround a few Berlin tracks that I liked from their Pleasure Victim album. Not that the garage and new wave and punk sounded anything like Berlin, but somehow I believed it did. And listening to it again, I realize that it kinda goes, but kinda not. Anyway enjoy the cover and the tracks on this pick. I'm glad the c-90 cassette found new life on here for you.

Electric Banana 1

Please don't ask how I came up with the title for this one. I don't remember. Although I did hand draw the banana. This was originally a cassette that I made around the time of Berlin's second album, but the first with Terri Nunn back at the helm. Which is why this cassette features four songs from the band on the whole cassette. each side became a CD and now a playlist. The pick is some tracks I was listening to in 1982. Some old garage and some new punk, a couple of covers, new wave and some rock. I hope you like the mix.

14 The Slits - I Heard It Through The Grapevine
15 Berlin - Sex (I'm A...)

Cool Jazz 2 (no jazz at all included)

This punk playlist pick is a recreation of the second cassette of the Cool Jazz series. Like being Rick Rolled, these playlists were a deception. Not Jazz. It was/is misinformation and disinformation. The cover was deceptive too. This was just around the time that people began painting nude women to look like they were dressed and photographing them in public, with almost no one figuring out that they were wearing only paint. Even the punk part of this pick was deceptive. Because it was more pop punk mixed in with some real punk. This volume makes it much more clear that this was not for kids. It is progressively more adult than volume one. By design. It gets more hardcore as you go along and then the stress releases and it becomes more pop. Humor mixed with division mixed with sex mixed with in your face confrontation. It takes the first amendment for this compilation to exist. Someone will be pissed off by at least one song. That, to me, is what punk is/was and also what the first amendment means and stands for. In life it is the same way, if somebody says something offensive and they are allowed to say it, then you have freedom. Misinformation, Disinformation are euphemisms for censorship. So enjoy your freedom!
