Mark E Smith

I am a Mark E Smith fan, especially in The Fall. And was happy to find him on other recordings besides the millions with the Fall. He did some guest spots and he was sampled and he did some side projects. This pick is a sampling of all that. Not as popular in the States as he was back home, but he definitely had some followers here. I figured he was probably a drunk and an ass, but anyone who could put out music like him was worth my time. He always looke dlike he would be yelling at someone to get off his lawn. Just my kind of guy!

This continues the pick from yesterday in honor of Ozzy Osbourne (may he RIP). These are not Black Sabbath tracks. Although he does guest on solo Tony Iommi and Bill Ward tracks. I have him on a duet with Kelly. And as a featured vocalist with many other artists. With the tracks yesterday and today, that is  most of what I have for Ozzy. Since the passing of Ozzy Osbourne I have been listening to quite a bit of Black Sabbath and his solo stuff (as is every fan, I'm sure) But I started to think about some of his guest spots on other people's albums, tribute albums and then even some of his band mates solo albums. I threw in a couple of his own stuff that had him bringing in guests on this pick. Not everything, but a good sampling. At least on on this volume has Ozzy just on background vocals and on the Hurricane Relief track from 2005 he (and his daughter Kelly) only do a few lines each along with a bunch of other stars. I'll continue this tomorrow with even more tracks. I'm sure that eventually some record company will put these on a compilation with probably more tracks, but you have this for now.

Eric Clapton With

I've done a few "With" picks, probably most recently Todd Rundgren With which turned out pretty good. But I guess not too many of these. Here's Eric Clapton With a bunch of other bands. Not really fair since he was a studio musician who loved playing on people's albums. I didn't include any tracks with him solo, nor did I include any Yardbirds nor any Cream. I did leave Derek & the Dominos on this pick. Oh well. I also included a track from the Bunbury's Bunbury Trail (which is another supergroup Eric was in - this time with the Bee Gee's). No rhyme or reason. But the tracks are all good. I almost added Yoko Ono, because Clapton plays on Don't Worry Kyoko... (a great song, but it didn't fit and it wasn't quite the best next to Brian Wilson anyway. Sorry about that. You will have to add it yourself.

Todd Rundgren With

I've been listening to a lot of Todd Rundgren recently and I already have a great connection pick of his production work that I called Rundgren Productions. Check it out. This one is a little different, although he did produce some of these songs or albums that they came from. On this pick he had to have played an instrument or sang on the recording. So for some that was easy since he was officially a band member in Nazz, Utopia and The New Cars. So he probably did both. Some he just played guitar (think Meat Loaf and the guitar that sounds like a motorcycle). Or drums and voice like the Ringo Starr All Starr Band. All sorts of combinations. No one is sure how many on the Jules Shear because it leaves it open. The duets, we know he sang. So look it up if you really want to know. I kept some of the "With's" for another playlist of covers because he also has some great covers. It's coming somewhat soon.

Joe Walsh Guest Guitar Pick

More and in a different direction than yesterday's pick. This Joe Walsh is all about his guest guitar spots. No Eagles tracks here and only one solo track which also was an Eagles track. I only used one Ringo Starr track but he played with the All Starrs often (now being related and all). Some I was less aware of until I started this compilation. which track were you the most surprised by? Listen closely, you'll hear the Walsh guitar on each one. BTW, the cover is based on a photo of him at a Crossroads concert twenty years ago. I love the shot.

Dolby Family

Yesterday was my pick of solo Thomas Dolby, but I also said that he worked with a lot of other artists. Not surprising as he's a great keyboard player and musician. All these tracks in today's pick have him featured in one way or another. He wrote or cowrote some of the songs. He played on on most all of them, too. And I through in some solo stuff that I didn't fit in yesterday. Only two tracks are duplicated and they have different versions here. Soft Boys and Robyn Hitchcock is pretty obvious. As is the George Clinton as they worked together on several projects. Lene Lovich appeared on his solo stuff (and wouldn't it be cool to hear Dolby's version of this song he wrote?). The two that I was initially surprised about was Foreigner and Def Leppard! It makes sense when you listen to the tracks. See the influence on Foreigner by listening to Dolby's song Urges. You can hear his sound on both though. It's less obvious on the Ofra Haza and the Belinda Carlisle, but listen carefully.  Anyway, have fun with this one. I did. Notice the covers for today and yesterday. I played off the Dolby brand with the font. Added his picture subtly, and added some spacey, electric background textures. Fun.

Jeff Beck Pick 2 (Guest)

This part two of the Jeff Beck pick features Jeff mostly as a guest axe man. I told you yesterday about how I got interested in Jeff Beck and that I saw him live many times. Solo. With Jan Hammer. And lots of solo. Never as a guest. Too bad, I would have loved to see him in the studio playing for anyone of the following, but especially Kate Bush. Never happened. But what did happen is that he came in to eat at the restaurant I was a waiter at. Fancy place in a hotel in downtown San Jose. I recognized him and knew he was playing, but he was seated in someone else's section. I traded a couple of tables for his table (and I had to do sidework for another waiter that evening. I didn't mind. But I was too busy and too wanting to be cool that I barely acknowledged him. I didn't get an autograph. It was before cell phones, so no selfie. I just slightly gushed and then just served him as best I could while he and his dinner partner talked business. I should have done more than shake his hand, but I didn't. Darn. You probably thought it was going to be a better story. Sorry. He was cool though. And they tipped well.

Earth Wind & Fire On The Side Pick

One of my top ten favorite bands is Earth Wind & Fire. So many reasons (see what I did there?) to love that band. I already did a pick of Don Myrick as an EWF family pick and it was good. This is more of the EWF band members guesting on other artists' tracks. And there are plenty. There is only one double between the Don Myrick Pick and this one and that's the Ramsey Lewis track. It is such a great track and the first that I knew of with EWF as main supporting actors. But the rest are all different. I included a couple of Maurice White solo tracks and a couple of Philip Bailey tracks since they included a few other members of Earth Wind & Fire as well as those guys themselves. See if you can hear them on each track. How noticeable are they on each? BTW, I especially like the cover I made, with the symbols for Earth Wind & Fire, the actual representations of each all behind the band shot. I think it can easily fit next to some of their other album covers and look legitimate. It might need a bit of kerning on their name, but otherwise....

David Gilmour Guest Pick

A few days ago, I had a pick of David Gilmour solo work. Out of the main members of Pink Floyd, Gilmour had the most amount of guest appearances on other people's albums. And it turns out some of my favorites. He also produced several artists. I confined this pick to actual guest spots as defined by him playing something on each song (although a few he also produced.) One of my favorites are the Kate Bush tracks. You can kind of hear the flavor of Floyd on several. Anyway, cool to hear these tracks together. I can tell you that Waters did not play well with others. Gilmour definitely did. He had less solo albums, but plenty of guest spots. I like the Orb track too. There was a bootleg called Pink Coffee which was kind of a mashup of Pink Floyd and the Orb, this might be better.

I promised something a little different, but still associated with Rick Wakeman. See, besides all of his huge amounts of solo albums (see Wakeman pick 2), Wakeman also guested on numerous other artist's projects. And remember I haven't included a single track he did with Yes. I normally would call this his family pick, but it really is only his guest spots. And not even all of them. He has guested for so many. And it is a wide variety. I really like how different they are in scope. Lou Reed? Black Sabbath? David Bowie? T. Rex? C'mon, who else has a pedigree like that. And I'm sure you know of more that I missed. But you know when you get to guest with Elton John the piano man, you are doing pretty good.
