Cocktail Hour 2

Part two of this pick. Cocktail hour is what I call it but it's appropriate for dinner or any other time you want some good music that you don't need to dance to. You can put it on for quiet moments like that or whatever. Go to sleep with this on in the background. That's nice, too. If you didn't get part one of this playlist go back a few days and find it.

Newfangled Again volume 6

We're in the home stretch on this pick series. Newfangled Again could be ongoing, but eventually I stopped and went on to other picks. Remember I said it comes in waves. Old is new and new is old. It's just the way life works. Every now and again we see something really new sounding and even that just seems new. My experience talking, which just means I'm old. For a while there some of these songs in this entire series were considered to be punk, I'd say not really. Some were considered new wave, again I'd say not really, but perhaps closer. Indie or power pop might be considered as a classification, but nah. It could be all of the above or it just could be rock. You decide. My decision still stands, It's:

Newfangled Again 6

Bad Bayou Voodoo Pick

Earlier, I posted some Zydeco music (Zydeco 1 and Zydeco 2) which you should pick up, but even though this pick is NOT zydeco, it comes from sort of the same place. But this was not inspired by those zydeco picks. I hate to admit it, but I have read all the books and watched the True Blood series. And I liked them. As I hang my head in shame, I can tell you that the books were better and worse at the same time. I liked the changes in the show and hated them at the same time. But they did a good job. Especially with the music. The Jace Everett opener "Bad Things" was a brilliant choice and THAT was the inspiration for this playlist. So of course there's Chris Isaak (two even) because they just fit. And all of it from Chickasaw Mudd Puppies to ZZ Top would fit in with the feeling. Have some wine, listen to the tracks and then binge.

Newfangled Again volume 5

It keeps on coming. Hopefully you are enjoying the series of my Newfangled Again pick, because here you are again. The track numbers keep increasing and we have more new wave pop disguised as rock and punk. Whatever it is, it is older and newer tracks that I felt would mesh well together. There are a couple of less old (or not quite new) tracks on this one when I out it together, but it all works out in the end. Leave a comment about what you think of the series so far. try not to be curmudgeonly (like the guy on the cover). Notice that the cover backgrounds changed slightly after volume 4.

Blues Pick 2

This is part two of my convincing a rock and roll lover that he really likes the blues, too. Amazing how many people really like the blues after they get exposed to it. Used to have the largest free blues festival in my backyard (San Jose State University) and got to hear some amazing blues bands over the years. Even got to eat lunch with some of the greats, but I never would have if someone hadn't first introduced me to George Thorogood. Mixed in with ZZ Top and Triumph, I was hooked and started going to blues clubs and collecting some fun albums. So that's why this pick series came into being. Pass it on and get someone hooked.

Newfangled Again volume 4

The ongoing saga of the Newfangled Again pick continues with volume 4. By now you've got an idea of what the older and newer combinations of mostly new wave songs are sounding like, unless you happened upon this series right here, in which case, go find the others in the series. Anyway as an old punk rocker (again with a mohawk of sorts, I always wanted to be the grandpa with a mohawk), I picked these to show how everything changes and is still the same. These songs fit together just fine.

Blues 1

How do you introduce someone to the Blues if they say they only like Rock and Roll? Well first we know it's a lie, because rock is based on the blues, but you have to show a side. This pick is my answer. It's a two volume playlist of bluesy rock and some real blues. I had to put in some bands that were not considered blues and yet really play the blues at times. And I'm not talking fool around with the blues, c'mon, Led Zeppelin plays the blues disguising it as rock and roll. Jimi played a bunch, Eric Clapton etc. Obviously not a definitive blues collection, at all, but a nice entry.

17 Rolling Stones - Mannish Boy
18 George Thorogood - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer

Newfangled Again volume 3

Here it goes again (foreshadowing volume 7) another Newfangled Pick. Some of this barely makes it on the criteria, but what the heck let's keep it in. Older and newer picks regardless. Some of these should have been big hits as far as I am concerned. I will never understand how the Buzzcocks did not get played on every major radio station, for example. If I programmed a radio station with all of these tracks, people would dig it. For now, you will have to be happy with this playlist.

Cocktail Hour 1

A nice selection of newer and older songs suitable for cocktail hour. Some standards and a few not yet, but all are appropriate for cocktails or dinner. I like all of these (and the ones in volume 2). They are classics or classic sounding to me. I remember watching the movie Umbrellas Of Cherbourg as a kid and just loving Catherine Deneuve. It always stayed with me and is perfect for this pick. Sorry, but Bjork got in here twice. Once in her pre-Sugarcubes band Gling Glo and once solo much later. I just do love the sound of both tracks and Luktar-Gvendur was the inspiration for making this playlist. BTW, I really like the marbling technique for the cover background. Fun to do!

Oooo...Baby, Baby (not rated for young children)

I guess it depends on your own values, but this might be too much for your children. These are all on the edge songs about sex in one way or another. And it may be offensive to some. I am not that person. If it is offensive, it's probably punk, if not in sound, then at least in attitude. Although a few of these are not really that offensive at all. Some pretty nice pop songs, but some definitely were written to offend. Remember the first amendment. It's only free speech if you sometimes find stuff you hate. All I can say is that this pick has views from all sides of the aisle. Something to offend everyone. I hope you enjoy it, though. Just play it on head phones and not at work. Many of these bands had other tracks that were not as sex oriented as these, so check them out. This was also posted at Butterboy.

Newfangled Again volume 1

This pick started because I was hearing some new music that reminded me of old music, So I put some old and new together for the current generation to discover some older music that fit in with their "new" music. All it really did was get me re-acquainted with some of my old favorites and start to really enjoy some of the bands coming out. But you get to benefit from my OCD-ness by listening to the first of many volumes of new and old wave, punk, whatever you want to label it. I label it: Newfangled, because I am becoming a cantankerous old punk. Get off my lawn! BTW, this was already posted on the fabulous ButterBoy site, so check out that blog.

Neil Young Grunge Pick

Recently Neil Young was in the news complaining about Joe Rogan on Spotify and he lost. Good for Spotify! Most people that like Neil, like his big hits. Not me. Well , that's not quite true, I do like the hits, but I especially like his really grunge-y stuff. So here is my pick of that stuff in this Grunge playlist. Noisy guitar and just real rock and roll. Not his wimpy folk stuff. I include his extra disc Arc, which is pure grunge with Crazy Horse and my favorite track of theirs that no one else seems to like: T-Bone. I can listen to that all day long. By now I have the lyrics down pat and even though I am keto now, I still like mash potato.

Asia Family (Downes, Howe, Palmer, Wetton)

Asia is a supergroup. So the four guys in Asia came from other groups and played with tons more, I'm sure. Geoff Downes from Buggles. Yes brought us Steve Howe (and Downes). Emerson Lake & Palmer brought us Carl Palmer. John Wetton came from a lot of places, but I like to think it was UK, but he was also in King Crimson, Uriah Heap, Roxy Music, etc. These guys played with each other, their band mates in various forms and tons of bands. Did you know that Geoff Downes, for instance, played on Kate Bush's Sat In Your Lap? Not on here, but interesting. So here's a pick of stuff they were on that I happen to like. So Asia's extended family for your pleasure.

Dean Martin Dino Golden Years

Deluxe Gatefold Digipack with 60 page, lavishly-illustrated and fully annotated book chronicles Dino's colorful life and musical career during his golden years. 100 original Reprise recordings from 1962-73. Collaborative compilation between Charly Records and the DMA; songs sequenced by Bernard. Charly and the DMA were working in earnest on exclusively releasing Dean’s entire Reprise recordings across a number of CDs, but the rights were bought by The Dean Martin Family Trust who subsequently re-released the complete albums in the US through EMI-Capitol, so this was the third and final Dean Martin release from Charly. This is my pick of songs for my Valentine. I suggest that you make your own playlist of songs that mean something for you and yours, but feel free to take some from my pick. And this is not the only pick I've made for my Valentine, but you may have to wait for some of the other ones I've made through the years. But this one is one for when you just are figuring it out. A couple of these songs are on because of personal reasons (like our first dances together, where we were, etc), but most are just about falling in love, being in love and realizing you would do anything for this special person.

Paisley Pick 1

Paisley to me is a sound of certain psychedelic songs. They overlap a lot with garage and psychedelic pop. I get that this is mainly a 60's kind of thing, but all through out the decades since, good stuff has come out. Backwards guitars, far out lyrics, echo etc help me to sort out the Paisley from the Hippie and Garage and Acid Rock. I hope you enjoy all six of these discs. I updated them. Click on the cover.

Please Show Membership Card

This is just stuff I was listening to in the mid-nineties. No connection except that. Seems to be mostly Industrial Dance. I made a lot of cassette tapes around that time. This pick is a higher quality recreation of one of them. The local club near me, that I liked to go to had a special membership card for regulars. I probably still have it somewhere, but that's what the title refers to. Not that the club played all this music, they didn't, some perhaps, but not most of this. Although I probably wished they did.

Polka Pick

How come I'm posting Polka the day after a Punk Primer? Good question. It goes back to my childhood and to my wife. You see I married a Polack (second generation, but 100% Polish descent). Her family grew up dancing Polkas. Not me. We grew up with Polack jokes (to be fair, we also grew up with jokes  based on every kind of racial, national combination you can think of, including Dutch and especially Belgian.) My dad was like Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady. He treated everyone the same - including himself. So ballroom dancing in my house. No polkas. But I married into this family, so being the music guy I am, started with the only polkas I knew (Weird Al) and began from there to check it out. Found some good traditional polkas and some more contemporary ones. Here are the favorites in this Polka Pick. Click on the accordion and go to jail. BTW the most punk thing you can do today is listen to Polka loud and in public!

Punk Primer Pick

As friends have kids and their kids have kids, I found myself passing on this pick more and more. Having lived this era, and loving the music, I want to pass it on. This introductory guide is my way of doing it. The rules were simple. It had to be punk (all aspects of punk was fine), it could not be rated beyond PG and the songs had to be some of my favorites, of course. This is the playlist I picked. They are tracks that kids (and adults) like. They cover enough punk to generate an interest to explore further. But not too much to scare anyone away. I hope you like it enough to share this pick with your kids (or grandkids) when it becomes time. PS: The cover had to be a PeeChee folder. Enjoy discovering things on there as well. I love the runner with a mohawk. That was me.

Adrian Belew Pick

Being discovered by Frank Zappa is the start of Adrian Belew's "fame" and certainly not the end. If you play with Zappa, you are a good musician. That's just a fact. Watch anyone out of the Zappa camp and they may be weird, dress funny, whatever you might say, but they are amazing musicians. Adrian Belew in this pick of highlights over the years shows off his guitar skills. And, I'm sorry, some of his solo stuff just should have been huge hits. I don't know why they weren't. Look up the individual albums, because they are really good. Bowie Zappa, Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, etc it's all excellent! Listen for the elephant guitars and just enjoy Big Electric Cat and Adidas In Heat. If this is your first time, I envy you.
