The New Year Connection

There is a little overlap in theme, but I've tried to make this mostly about the day of New Year, not necessarily New Year's Eve. Although you could easily argue that several of these tracks could be New Year's Eve songs. This What's the Connection? is supposed to be New Year's Day. Starting the New Year. New resolutions, new goals, new start. It's brand new. But to many of us, it's also sleeping late feeling hungover or staying up and watching a parade. Eating leftover cold pizza (or is that only me?) Leave me a comment on how it is for you and if I missed a glaring song for the New Year. Click on the fresh as a daisy in the snow cover I designed. Looking forward to a year more of these compilations.

Here's part 2 of the What's The Connection? What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? All the same song done by different people in different styles. Happy New Year Connection 3 (Auld Lang Syne)

Here it is: Even More! This What's The Connection? gives you more of that wonderful song Auld Lang Syne, as if you needed more. But I guess you should know what it came from. Auld Lang Syne may be old Scottish for "Old Times"  or "Long, Long Ago" and although it is traditionally used to close out the Old Year, it was also sued as a song at farewells, funerals and even graduations. The text was written by Robert Burns. It's said that the first line: "For Auld Lang Syne" just means "For the Sake Of Old Times". So I guess now you might find other occasions to use this playlist. Make sure to click on the cover. And have a Happy New Year for the sake of old times!

What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? Connection 1

Planning ahead for New Year's Eve is a pretty normal thing. Going out and finding a party or celebration used to be what you did, especially as a single person on New Year's Eve. Perhaps not so much in times like today, but this song might still be relevant in Tinder times. You tell me. I'm married and older, so I bang on pots at midnight (if we can stay up). That's what I am doing New Year's Eve. If we go out it will be early and with family and friends. Yep, boring. But we still sneak in a New Year's kiss at midnight if we can. Enjoy this two part What's The Connection? Whatever you do this New Year's Eve, I hope it's with someone you love, like the cover of this playlist.

Happy New Year Connection 2 (Auld Lang Syne)

A continuation of the Auld Lang Syne What's The Connection? We had so many different version of that song that it was crazy. And really how many times do you want to hear this song. I get that it usually is only played after midnight on New Year's Eve and you are usually busy at that time, not paying that much attention to the version playing. But now you can really focus in on your favorite version. In the next day or so, look for even more. The cover is still interesting.

Gelukkig Nieuwjaar! Lucky New Year Connection

This New Year's Connection is all about New Year's songs.  Not any one genre at all. You may notice that I named this What's The Connection? in the Dutch traditional greeting for the New Year. I have some Dutch in my heritage, so it's what my family says. I get that it's impossible to pronounce if you do not speak Dutch. Just remember that the "G" is softer than you think. Anyway enjoy the cover (Amsterdam fireworks in the background) and the weird songs mixed in with more mainstream stuff. More New Year's stuff coming.

Happy New Year Connection (Auld Lang Syne)

This is one of those playlists that you will only use every year. Several versions of Auld Lang Syne in this What's the Connection? Once we changed the format of our station right around the holidays and to get people ready we played Auld Lang Syne for a whole week up to New Year's Day. Very funny, but got boring quick. Tons of versions were submitted to us and we ended up with hours worth of the song. These are some of the ones we started with. The background of the cover was an excerpt of a drawing in colored pencil by my ex-wife, who had some amazing drawing talents. Click on it. One of these songs in this playlist is not Auld Lang Syne, but has it in the title and a few just use the song as "inspiration." BTW there is a good connection for the end of the year done by Butterboy. Check out his "It was a Very Good Year" Connection. It's good. I wish I had compiled it.

Xmas Cookie Santa 1 Pol's Pick

This is part of my Xmas Cookie series, but a side connection. All of the songs on this spinoff are about Santa. So there are a couple of doubles, sorry. I like those Santa songs a lot. But it's just one or two from some of the previous Xmas Cookie volumes. Either way I hope you like them in this new setting. Songs like Nick's Early Years, or the perspective of two women who love Santa in My Man is too good to leave off. Don't worry lots of others in here that are not on any of the previous picks. A couple of traditional songs, some that will become classics and a few more out there Santa Songs. Gotta like the Santa cookie cover. Makes you wonder, does Santa eat himself if he eats that cookie?

Xmas Cookie 5 Pol's Pick

Continuation of the Xmas Cookie saga. Some old and some new. One of my favorite tracks from the movie Holiday Inn . Not strictly a Christmas movie since it covers all the major holidays with songs, but I watch it every year anyway. It isn't going to play on regular TV, though because of some blackface scenes, but ignore the historical references and just enjoy the music. The Snow track is superb. Nina Hagen one of my all time favorite artists, plus more Dean Martin mix it up with a couple of more recent tracks I enjoyed. As usual, click on the Reindeer Cookie cover. Notice that some of the same songs appear in each volume, but with different artists? Like Mele Kalikimaka. Whenever I can, I do.

Xmas Cookie 4 Pol's Pick

The next in the series of Xmas Cookie Picks. A few tracks from the soundtrack of Olive The Other Reindeer (a very cute animated Christmas movie) Not just because of Michael Stipe, but also because of Drew Barrymore. There may be another one on one of the other volumes, I forget which. Found a few Grinchy songs again this year, along with great alternative versions of more traditional tracks. Gotta mix it all up. Xmas Cookie 3 Pol's Pick

Number three in the series of Pol's Pick's for Christmas. This Xmas volume again has a version Mele Kalikimaka. I put one in whenever I can find a version. One of the first Christmas albums that I wore out was Bing Crosby's White Christmas which had that song on it. Since I, at the time, lived in Southern California where I never saw snow and they decorated palm trees, I immediately was drawn to the song. Still love it today, even though I don't see decorated palm trees at Christmas much anymore.  A couple of things about this volume. First it has one of the first "doubles". If you got the Christmas G volume, you'll notice the Gayla Peevey and Peter Alsop on there as well. Sorry, but I did this one first and later made the G rated one and realized that those songs had to be on the G volume. This one also has Kate Bush, one of my favorite artists of all time. And a bunch of really cool songs, including the Tryfles from a Midnight Xmas Mess compilation lp (I've never seen it on CD or MP3 before, so enjoy). Those are some great lp's so look for them. Notice the cover is another cookie and leave a comment and tell me what you liked. And yes, I know King Missle isn't "really" a Christmas song, but it fits so well anyway.

Xmas Cookie 3

The tome goes all over the place like most of these in the series. I will put up more each day before Christmas. Notice the cover is different on each. I hope this puts you in the Christmas Spirit. Xmas Cookie 1 Pol's Pick

I love Christmas. And I love Christmas songs. Especially the more unusual ones. It's just one of those things I collect. I started making Xmas cassettes years ago. Designing covers and giving them to family and friends . The Xmas Cookie Pol's Pick series is a copy of the first CD's I made following all of that. I hope you enjoy some of these, are offended by at least a few and hopefully there's one that you have never heard before that you end up loving like I did in this series. I'll post a few of them over the next couple of days until Christmas. I'm guessing that a few of these have not yet been in your regular Christmas song list. Unless you worked at Digi-Design when they first got started, you won't recognize, Hieronymous Johnson, for instance. He went by several names and bands in the Silicon Valley Bay Area. Some are obvious hits from the time. Enjoy them all. I especially love the Swamp Zombies, Romy and Conch because they nailed it. And the Fluf, Deadbolt and Steve Poltz are perfect for the Grinches in your life. BTW, none of these in the series is completely SAFE for work or kids, so please listen first. I love the plain cover, too.

Make Love Not War volume 1 (Hippie Music Connection)

Hippie music to me is a little different than psychedelic music or acid rock. It can mean anything, really, that you want it to. Hippies in the 60's listened to most all music that was out in the sixties. So this connection has more to do with that it is not necessarily psychedelic music (which I call paisley music in my weird classification system). And it's not necessarily acid rock (which I think of as psychedelic music that's harder rock, but not quite prog). But everything else that's left over. And it's usually connected in some fashion or another with peace and love and doing your own thing, man. Listen to this What's The Connection? and get an idea of what I mean. I have a few volumes of this, so be patient, They will be posted. Enjoy the cover.

Feedback Connection

This What's the Connection? is all songs with the use of feedback in them. It's not clear who the first artist was to use feedback in a recording, but I included all the main contenders. I also put in a few of my favorite songs using feedback. Generally Little Walter  was thought to be one of the first , but The Beatles I Feel Fine was the first to use feedback on purpose on a commercial rock recording. There are so many songs over history that could be used in this connection. Perhaps you will make the next compilation to add to this one. Leave a comment with your favorites that I left out. Give me some feedback on how you liked this connection. Click on the Feedback form.

Jesus Connection (Songs with Jesus in the Title)

Once more a What's The Connection? made because the radio show after mine was a brilliant Christian Rock show. Sixties Summer Love (Volume 3)

I recently got the Sixties Summer Love collection thanks to Butterboy. It's a two disc collection of some amazing love songs from the sixties, But I kept noticing that some of my favorites were not in there. So I decided to make a third disc full of songs in a playlist. This is the culmination of that decision. No rhyme or reason, just love songs from the sixties that weren't necessarily hits, but ones I liked and were not already on discs 1 & 2. On that premise, I also didn't change their cover, I just added a disc. I started the numbering after their first 50 songs.

Angels Connection (Songs with Angel in the title)

Another one of these What's the Connections based done because I had a show just before a really good Christian music show. This one is all based on having Angel in the title. It encompasses a variety of genres, but like all the compilation playlists I make, consists of all songs that I own. As usual the cover that I designed is good to click on. Hard to find compilations that go from Tavares to Hendrix, with Costello as a mid point. Anyway, I know there are a ton of other Angel songs out there. What obvious ones am I missing? Leave a note in the comments. One day I'll have to make volume two of this.

Slipped My Disco 2 Connection

There are so many disco songs done by artists that were not considered disco artists that I could do many of these connections. These are mostly rock bands doing their one obligatory disco song to test the waters. Most never did a second. But we got some great disco tunes because of it. Volume 1 of the Slipped My Disco series was good, but missed by not having these tracks. Click on the cover and leave a comment on your favorite disco song by a non disco band to maybe use in a future What's The Connection?

Friday Connection (songs with Friday in the title)

A What's The Connection? for a Friday. Not as many great Friday songs, although I'm sure I am missing something (let me know in the comments). And I was totally lazy for the cover, appropriating a creative commons image and barely touching it. Click on it anyway. A few of these tracks are just so great and any compilation with both the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone can't be bad. And those aren't the best tracks...

Western Connection (Cowboys and Indians)

What's the Connection? became a lot about themes in song titles. Was this word or another used in the title of the song. That isn't that difficult to do, if you have all your songs cataloged by album and artist. But it's harder to get a theme like Westerns done, because you have multiple things going on at the same time. Watching old westerns to me means time with my dad going to the movies and seeing The Magnificent Seven, Little Big Man, Red Sun, etc. Usually Cowboys and Indians. Back then there was no PC term. I was a proud member of the Y-Indian Guides as a kid in the probably made up tribe name: the Wa-Kay tribe. But we took it seriously. So here are some of my favorite songs reminding me of Westerns. Click the cover as usual. And if you have any favorite songs of yours that remind you of Westerns, make sure to leave a comment

What Plants Crave Connection (RIYL Brawndo - Idiocracy)

This Connection was inspired by me watching the movie Idiocracy too many times. From President Camacho to "Not Sure" (Joe) and Frito and the rest, this movie was always very funny to me and now seems to be coming true. I had to make this playlist of  dumb, stupid, idiotic, moronic songs because it has electrolytes. Like Brawndo. I had as much fun making this playlist as watching the movie. I've probably watched this movie more times than any other movie except four. So it sort of is a RIYL. If you like the movie, you might like these songs. But it's also a What's The Connection? Click on the album cover and comment below about other idiotic songs you like.
