Surf Beat 5

I was starting to think this concept had fully run its course, but this batch proves there is still some gas left in the tank. Forcing classic, reverb-drenched twang to sit right alongside abrasive, snotty punk rock should result in total structural failure, but instead, it creates a weirdly infectious friction. This particular pick functions like a high-speed collision where the aggressive energy of the underground perfectly mirrors the frantic velocity of the tides. It is a loud, messy collision of subcultures that somehow feels completely intentional by the time the final note cuts out. If you want to dive deeper into this chaotic surf dynamic, the full archive is waiting, though this might just be the absolute final ride unless you guys have some suggestions to keep it going.

Whitewash Wipeout

I have been a big fan of surf music for decades, especially surf instrumentals and love bands like Agent Orange and The Ventures. This pick does not have either band, but it does have that feel of both throughout. A couple are on the border of surf, but still make it for me. Let me know if you like any of them more than any others or what you would like to surf to? Did I miss any other good ones? There are so many.

Xmas Board

Merry Christmas — here’s your Xmas surf soundtrack pick. I know it's Christmas Eve day, but now you'll be ready. Growing up in sunny California, not being in snow (except for that one city block where they dumped the man-made stuff) until I was 18, surf music at Christmas was never an exception — it was just normal. This is guitar-led holiday surf music. My only regret was not finding Mele Kalikimaka in a proper surf version, but at the last minute I found a hidden track with a good bonus version. Ride your board, put on some Sex Wax, and enjoy the holiday.

The Ventures Our Own Assets

I really think this could pick have been one of the 250 or so albums that the Ventures actually put out. It's got the look. It's got the songs. It's got the right 60's surf vibe. Even the title is just right. These are all songs played by the Ventures, but also written by the Ventures. I love that the band name sounds businesslike and the title sounds businesslike, but tongue is firmly in cheek. So several of their hits are not here, because they were covers, but all these originals sound amazing. They really are assets. Take a trip through a portion of their history, from their classic logo to the hot model on the cover and their groundbreaking music.

V-Like (Ventures-like)

I was listening to some surf music and got a recommendation to watch a documentary on The Ventures. I like most surf music anyway and the Ventures were always cool, so I did. They were the first Surf record I ever had, then came the Surfaris. The documentary was good, so I started listening to them and wondered. How many bands have been influenced by them? A Lot. And then started thinking of songs that sounded like the Ventures, but were not covers of songs they did. That's what this pick is. It's all songs that sound like The Ventures, but aren't. I limited it to one song per artist and limited it to the Ventures sound of mostly the Bob Bogle, Don Wilson, Nokie Edwards period, but I was loose on that. They changed over the years, but that core sound is still there today.

Surf-A-Billy 1

There is no real genre called Surf-A-Billy, but this comes close. Some surf, some rockabilly, some crossovers on this pick. Shorter songs, so 28 fit in this compilation. I was listening to the psychobilly of the Billy Goat Gruff mixtape of three days ago and realized how much overlap there was especially on the tracks I didn't use on that one. Similar to the old Surf Beat show I used to air years ago filled with Surf Punk - there is a lot of overlap between the genres. I love the cover with the surfing goat with a  pompadour and leather jacket. AI can be our friend. I hope I can do another one of these sometime in the future. I like it, it's fun.

Surf Beat 4

I am not going to explain this again. Go to the Surf Beat 3 pick  for links to it all. Some of these punk bands I saw in the Bay Area in various clubs and halls. Los Olvidados played everywhere as did the Dead Kennedys. One of the bands I was not expecting one night out was the Wounds who I happened to catch at the Fab Mab one night as an opening band. They had a flute player! So punk. At the time mixing punk and surf was not that crazy. It just seemed to go well. Remember these are all songs I actually played during my show over the time I had it.

Surf Beat 3

You can see that this is the third volume of this compilation. The first Surf Beat was based on a mixtape I made based on a surf punk radio show I hosted. Which is a lot of base-ing. The second Surf Beat was a continuation of that. And this pick goes even farther. I haven't done the show in over a decade, but still love all the music. The hardest part of the actual show was playing so many songs in a row that were short and still keep the albums and singles in order and not mess them up as I was putting them away and still be able to talk and keep track of everything. Lots of prep work. This volume only has one song under sixty seconds, so it would have been less of a problem, but some of those shows were short song after short song. Hard to keep up. Imagine playing a bunch of Descendents and Angry Samoans all in a row. I stayed away from that as much as possible. Learn about carts in volume one.

Surfing & Spying 2

Volume two of the cassette I made so long ago. This is the Spying side of the cassette. Although I said yesterday. the content is not quite so much divided. This pick has surf songs on both sides and frankly the most spying stuff is on the surfing side. I can't explain it. It's just the way it turned out. Either way this pick is from my collection back then, recreated as a playlist for you. I took the original cassette cover that I had hand drawn, scanned it and used parts of it for this cover.

Surfing & Spying 1

This is from a cassette I made a long time ago. One side I called Surfing and the other I called Spying. This is the first side. This pick includes a bunch of Surfing songs or beach songs, much of it instrumental. A few words here and there (tequila!). Each side is NOT really separated by Surf and Spy. But that was the premise of the whole cassette. The cover I recreated from the cassette as a CD and now it's the playlist cover. All songs that are and were in my collection.

Surf Beat 2

If you saw yesterday's post you will know the origin story. If you didn't see it, go back and read it. Either way. I listened to volume one for years. Always loved it, but knew I had skipped a bunch of songs that I used to play. That and I had since discovered a couple of bands that I would have played if they were around at the time (for sure the Surfrajettes - how cool are they!?). So it was time to make volume 2. So I made volume 2 and I really liked it too. My pick of Surf and Punk songs that make up this playlist are just the ticket for you to skate and thrash to this summer, so I am bringing it out again. I never made volume three, but listening to this again might inspire me.

Surf Beat 1

I love surf music and I love punk music. I used to do a radio show with both of those elements called Surf Beat. Back in the 80's you played mostly records (LP's and 45's) and on the radio you had carts. These looked like 8-tracks, but played stereo. So to do a show that included some really short songs, you had to have some on cart and be quick changing records (all while keeping track of what you played, breaks etc.) Very difficult. But that's where the Surf Beat playlist came from. This is my pick from that. Playing good Surf songs, good Punk songs and having it mix well. Classic Surf. Classic Punk.

Agent Orange Pick

I have always been a fan of surf music. And I always have loved punk music. Try my Surf Beat comps. So when I heard Agent Orange, I was in love. This is my pick of the best of Agent Orange. I remember going to a concert to see them later in their career. I was all excited. In San Jose civic auditorium, but it ended up in some smaller hall there. I was the oldest guy there by about 20 years. I was the old guy who kept the pit clean. So many young kids. But it didn't matter. I had loved them when I was younger (not that young) and now they were old and I was old and yet you could still skate and thrash to their music. Still makes me want to thrash, but now I'm grandpa skater boy. BTW, I made the cover and I'm proud of it.
