What's The Connection? Party 2

Happy New Year's Eve! To get you started on your Party tonight I have this Party Connection Part two. If you want part one click on Party 1. But this two is a continuation of that one. Hence the numbering begins at 22. One of the Happiest Party songs ever is on this volume. Not sure why I didn't have it on volume one, but now you have Byron Lee & The Dragonaires. It always gets people happy and dancing. Haven't ever found a better Soca song. Rock, Surf, Bollywood, Country, etc. it's all in here. There will be a song that will make your day (or in this case, night). It's on here. You just need to find it. Have fun tonight, but stay safe.

What's The Connection? Cold 1

There is no snow for us this year, but it was cold and rainy Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas. Cold and sunny the day after and then just cold until today. To stay ready for the cold here is a connection of Cold songs. It's the first of what could be a lot, because there are a lot of songs about cold. We could probably do a WTC just on the song Baby, It's Cold Outside, but that will be for another year. Some fun cold songs on this volume. I think it's funny that Ohio Players who have a hit with Fire, also have a cold song. For some Hot songs click on Hot and find three volumes of them. And, of course, I included Foreigner who have the biggest Cold hit of all. We'll see what some other cold songs are later. Just enjoy these and give me some suggestions on your favorite cold songs in the comments.

What's The Connection? Oldsmobile

More car types in this connection. Today we have Oldsmobile. And there used to be lots of these. Older songs, older bands. Less people made these into hotrods and probably fairly rare now. But people loved this brand for quite some time. I never owned one. Never drove one either. But I knew a guy who knew a guy who tricked one out. That's all I got. I just know they must have been a merry car. The cover is another comic version with similar background. And I did add a jingle for Oldsmobile.

What's The Connection? Corvettes

I included songs with titles that had Corvette in it as well as Stingray. I know the connection cover has a yellow Corvette on it and that red Corvettes are especially popular in song, but I liked this rendering of a yellow Corvette. Prince is probably the most popular song about the car, but there are other versions that are good and many other great songs about Corvettes and Sting Ray Corvettes. The Marketts and Jan & Dean come to mind. It's crazy but this car  has been popular among artists for as long as the car has been out. And still today. This one will go by fast. I've unfortunately, never owned one, but I've driven several. They are fun.

Perhaps next year, or if I get hit with a lot of snow, I will post songs about snow fall or snowflakes. For now this is what you get. An amazing snow goose, a snow rabbit, purple snow and a little jazz and it has Kate Bush (finally). I didn't get much snow growing up. Never experienced a snow day. Blue Christmas

Happy Christmas Eve! T'was the nite before Christmas and all throughout the land there are excited girls  and boys waiting for Santa Claus to come to their house. But we also have a decent amount of people who are sad at this time of year. Someone is no longer in their lives. Or they are having a tough year this year. Hard to believe with all those great Bidenomics going on in the US at least. For those people I present this connection of Blue Christmas songs. If you are blue this Christmas, then play these blue Christmas songs (or basically the same one over and over by different people. That might be just enough to really make you blue if you weren't before. Me? I love Christmas. Any holiday where I can make a few people happy with a good song, a good word or even a present is good for me. And I love Christmas lights and especially Xmas cookies, no matter what color they are.

What's The Connection? Snow 1

It's the first of a two parter today. I could have sworn that I posted this up before, but it turns out I hadn't put this connection up yet and I was finishing up part 2. So one part today and the other after Christmas. I have no idea if it's snowing by your house or not, but it doesn't look like snow for me. Oh well. Here's a selection of songs with snow in the title, but no versions of Let It Snow. I started it off with a great song from a Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye movie. Can you tell me which movie it is? One of my favorites. Bunch of great bands in here. So enjoy it while you have it.

Funky Disco (Leopard) 3

I've done a few of these Funky Disco (Leopard) picks already and I hope you realize how much I like them. I grew up in the disco era and I always was a funk fan, so getting the two together is just bonus time for me. Several funk bands made disco tunes to get more airplay on both radio and clubs. I'm always surprised that people hate or love this genre. Fusing funk with disco or vice versa,  just makes so much sense to me. Later they fused disco with punk and new wave and industrial. I like them all. Notice a few things about this pick. Some are disco bands and some are funk bands. And all have done both. Remember that the Praxis track has nothing to do with the Bill Laswell associated band Praxis. That came later than this one and was much harder than this seventies band. Please leave a comment with a funk/disco track that I haven't used yet that you really like.

Chalet Girl

This soundtrack to the movie Chalet Girl is here because a friend asked me to put it together. There may be an album somewhere of all the tracks in the movie, but I certainly didn't find it. So I tracked down each song and added them all here in this pick. I ran everything through Platinum Notes, MixedInKey, MP3Gain and BPM analyzer, like I do for all of these. Then I made a cover based on the poster for the movie. This is the result. Probably not that much call for this movie soundtrack, but some of the songs are quite good. Now, I can't say I am going to watch the movie over and over again, but the soundtrack, perhaps. It's growing on me.

Fill It Up To The Rim 2

I had made another pick called Fill It Up To The Rim based on the Paper Moon soundtrack. And I always enjoyed it. Since that time, I have been quietly collecting other tracks that fit into the same kind of era, that I like, Some songs are from that time, or sound like they belong. Some from ten to twenty years later, but similar to the actual soundtrack still fit. A few of the tracks might have been played on the radio at that time, but were "hits" from the years prior. None of that matters to me, because I wasn't even a glimmer in my father's eyes yet. So as long as it sounds like it could belong, I allowed it to be in this one. So this is my volume two. I continued the numbering right after volume one, so you could play it all together if you wanted to.

Mixtape: Love Riot

This is not my usual kind of compilation that I would post here. I made this pick based on the movie Mixtape. I haven't seen a soundtrack for it, so I made one. The first eight songs (spoiler alert if you haven't seen the movie) are the songs she looks for throughout the movie. A cassette tape her parents made. It's a cute movie and has a number of really good songs in it. I'm pretty sure I screwed up the order in which they appear, but you can fix that if you feel inclined. But I put in all the songs I could find on here. I also put two versions of one song in the movie, by two artists. I'm confident that one of them is the correct one from the movie (track 25) but I didn't have it at first and put another version in, so switch them (or not) as you prefer. If you haven't watched the movie, like I said, it's cute and worth at least one viewing. I made the cover to look like the cover of the cassette, sort of.

Cover Medleys

I made this one special for Butterboy who has a great blog. Check it out. Here is his Meddled Pick. Mine has a couple that are the same, a couple of the same studio artists, but most is different. When I sent it to him, I said it's 25 songs from 21 artists and one bonus track. Most of these are from Studio only bands. A couple are from comedy or novelty acts. About ten are artists/bands who just did a medley. Shalamar became a "real" band, but the first album with this medley was a studio concoction. Some DJ's put together a lot of these. Some with sound-a-likes to mimic the "real" bands and some didn't bother. Lots of these were disco tracks played in clubs to allow DJ's to go to the bathroom. I don't care, I love them all. Five were live medleys and one was made to sound like it was live. Either way this is unlike most of the compilation picks I post. It's over three hours long.

Blue Power 2

Continuing on with the colors connection and also the Blue Power Connection, here is volume two. I haven't even begun posting the Purple Power or the Red Power, but they are coming as are  volume two and more of the other colors I have already posted. Not sure why this got pushed to the front. Maybe because I also will be doing a Blue Christmas post this year. I do know that I had to randomly decide which tracks made it on to volume one and which got put on volume two, because I liked them all so much. Notice on either volume that on some tracks I put originals and others I used covers. I like both, but chose one or the other more based on time, since I still limit these to about a CD length. Even though no one plays CD's anymore and there is no limit to a play list. If you want one playlist just put them together and generate another m3u.

Blue Power 1

More of the color connections. This Connection is about the power of Blue. Based on the number of Blue songs, it's probably very powerful. If you take out all the songs about Blues (that takes forever), thne you still have thousands of Blue songs left. The first two volumes of this WTC, I didn't limit the power. I took my favorite Blue Eye song and my favorite Blue Day songs etc and kept them in. After the initial ones, I will do a specific Baby Blue connection, a Blue Love connection, a Blue Moon connection, etc. In the meantime here are the top of my list in volume one and tomorrow volume two. Some great songs in here.

Green Power 1

Continuing on the colors, this connection is about green power. And I've noticed something. And perhaps this may become a future WTC. There were a couple of songs in here about green eyes. And I know just off the top of my head that there are brown eyed songs and blue eyed songs. Can't think of any yellow or red eyes songs right this moment. But there have to be a lot of songs about eyes. I'm thinking of eyes, since I am about to schedule some eye surgery. It's on my mind. Well, that's all besides the point for this compilation. Go back and search for other colors (brown, black, white, yellow so far) and leave your favorite suggestions in the comments. This might be my favorite color right now. More power to the green!

What's The Connection? Down 1

I already posted the I'm Down Connection. And also the Don't Down Me connection. This one is similar. It's all the other downs. Goin' Down, Down and Out etc. Including some She's Down, You're Down, We're Down, Sugar's Down. And there are some good ones. I figure just in time for the Christmas season, when some people just feel down, We'd be here to remind them by playing some of these songs. LOL! Seriously, it is an issue, so be careful around this time. Pay attention. Don't be playing all Christmas songs. Some is good, just not all.

What's The Connection? Homicide 1

Whether you want to call it murder or homicide, I have a clue for you, it's this connection. Not so much about murdering, but songs with Murder or Homicide in the title. And there are a lot. I can easily come up with three or four more, no problem. And that's not including songs that are about specific murders. One of my favorites of that selection would be about the Moors Murders in the UK by Throbbing Gristle. But the title of that song does not have Murder or Homicide in it. In fact, it's Very Friendly. And that murder was anything but friendly. Anyway, the Blow Monkeys and Budgie is where I started this. Forgive me. And also forgive me for the cover. I couldn't help it.

What's The Connection? Homicide 1

01 Kiss - Murder In High Heels
02 Blow Monkeys - Sweet Murder

15 The Smiths - Meat Is Murder [Live]
16 The Specials - Somebody Got Murdered
17 Blue Oyster Cult - Dial M For Murder
18 The Runaways - Trash Can Murders

AKA Pseudonym

This was really fun to figure out. I knew plenty right off. And skipped a lot. These are all artists who recorded under a Nom De Plume or and AKA or a Pseudonym for this pick. Other than the Traveling Wilburys which has five artists all using a Wilbury fake name (and has George Harrison) I didn't use a single Beatles recording where they used a fake name. And there are a lot of those. And some good ones. I put two Prince ones in, but everyone else only one. XTC has another one that I didn't use, but it's Christmas oriented and didn't want that to be a factor. Some sound obviously like themselves and some not at all. That's the fun part of this. You never know. A couple have been released later with the original names no longer hidden (think Garth Brooks, The Alarm as examples). But a few have kept the joke going. Either way I would love it if you knew of some that I didn't and left me clues in the comments.

What's The Connection? Yellow Power 1

In this continuing story of color connections, I bring you Yellow Power! See yesterday for links to other colors and the whole power part of it and forget all of it. It was only there to dupe you into thinking this was something other than just colors in titles. Today being Yellow, obviously. I did not put anything from the band Yello or Yellow Magic Orchestra. Only song titles with it in the title. A couple of my favorites include the Negativland track. I do not know why that tickles me so much, but I find the song great and hilarious. I know it's not the favorite of most Beatles fans, but I love this Ringo song and the movie it came from. Reminds me of early Peter Max. I even have a lava lamp based on the movie. And Zappa. I love Zappa. And that album has a special place in my heart. I know some of the other Yellow tracks may be more popular and good in their own way, but for me, those are the best.

What's The Connection? Brown Power

Another one in the color connection series. Just to mess with you I added Power to the title to make it seem like it was more than just the color in the title, but it isn't. All of these are songs with Brown in the title and that's it. I already did a White Power connection and a Black Power connection. I got more color power coming your way, eventually. So hold your horses. Your favorite color is coming. My favorite hasn't been finished yet. Let me know what your favorite color is and your favorite song with that color in the title. Lots of great Brown songs, btw. One of my favorites is the one by the Stranglers. Also notice that two of the songs could also be used in in a Blue connection (that will be harder, because you have to filter out all the blues songs.

Mercedes De Milo 4

It has been a while since I posted up one of these. The Mercedes De Milo pick started long ago, but has not stopped. Click on that link to find volume one where I tell the story. Even though it is long past the origins, I still have the PZA lalbel for this pick. Nostalgia, I guess. This one has a little mini connection going through it. See if you can guess what it is. Not too difficult. But I left you something like a Hi Lights Find The Difference. I used to love getting that magazine when I was a kid. Come to think of it, was that even the name of it? Goofus and Gallant I remember. First saw it at my Doctor's Office and we made mom get it for us. Sidetracked by the squirrel I see. Anyway these fit in nicely with the rest of the set. Someday I'll post volume 5. Any suggestions for it?

Donovan Covers

I have liked Donovan for a while. I wasn't a huge-normous fan, but I liked his stuff. I had a couple of albums including the Greatest Hits, but didn't collect everything. I really enjoyed when other people covered him. Kate Bush, who I do collect meticulously, had her rare cover of him. So that was my first pick. Brix E. Smith, who I also collect, has a great cover. And lo and behold Butthole Surfers have a great cover of the same song. So I had to allow for doubles. There are a few. But the Dickies isn't one of them. I've seen them live many times. Never once did I see them play this song. Too bad. At least I got to hear my other favorites. Only one song is not really a cover. You'll figure it out. I hope you enjoy these all. The cover caricature of Donovan was not done by me. Can't tell you who. Don't know. But I liked it.

What's The Connection? Let's Dance 1

This seems like it is a lot of covers of one song, but really it is a few songs. The connection is Let's Dance. When you think of that song, you probably think of one of two different songs. David Bowie or Chris Montez. But in reality there are many covers of both. And even a song or two with the same name that have nothing to do with those songs. Go listen to all of these. One you will see is by DOA and does not have the same title. If you are offended, too bad (skip it). It is a parody? of Chris Montez. The funny thing about this song is I had it on a 12 inch single. I bought it without knowing anything about the song except the title. I brought it home with a few other albums. I played it 33 rpm for quite some time, thinking Flipper and actually still finding it interesting. Later I realized my mistake and it's better at 45.

What's The Connection? Boots 2

This continuation of the Boots Connection has several versions of one song: These Boots Are Made For Walking. I know it as a Lee Hazlewood song that Nancy Sinatra made famous. There are probably hundreds of versions of this song, but I picked from the ones I have. Obviously not all of them. There are a couple I really like. One being the British Electric Foundation with Paula Yates. Paula was married to Bob Geldoff (who you should know) and also had affairs with Michael Hutchence (INXS) and Terrence Trent D'Arby and Rupert Everett. I guess she got around. I don't care but she had a tragic life and death. I only wish she would have sang on more songs. I love her version of this. I am not from the UK so I never watched her show on the Tube. So that was never impressive to me. I also like the Bay Area band Big Hair. Unfortunately they didn't record much. One of their spin offs was Whistling Bullets and they recorded a little and it was good. Old or new, sweet or raunchy, this song is pretty darn good. Notice, no Nancy (get that from two days ago Boots WTC).

Xmas G Pick (Christmas songs with a G rating for kids) (repeat)

It's December 5th! So, for little Dutch and Indo boys and girls, it's Christmas. Happy St. Nicholas Day to you. I grew up with this being the start of Christmas. We would put out our shoes by the fireplace and hope that St Nick would come and leave us some chocolate. And hope we weren't so bad that Zwarte Piet would come take us and bring us on a ship to Spain. I always got chhocolate and some dutch treats. and a note from Saint Nicholas that told me how I could improveover the next year. We still celebrated Christmas as well. What's The Connection? Boots 1

One of my favorite Boots songs is by Nancy Sinatra and she's on this Connection, but believe it or not that's not the song that started me on the path of this WTC. It was of all people: Candyman. His song when it came out with the multiple samples was controversial, but popular. He was discovered by Tone Loc (who did an intro on the song) I had the original 12 inch of the song. It sampled, Rose Royce, who I loved. And Brick and Betty Wright and even Doug E Fresh. Great song. Anyways, I hadn't heard it in awhile, so I dug it out and decided to make a What's The Connection around it. What I found is that I had a ton of Nancy Sinatra covers (so I will do another volume of Boots with all those) and I a bunch of cool songs, so probably yet another volume of the ones that didn't fit on here. I had to put Nancy on here since I like that song so much, but none of the rest are covers of that song.

Bo Diddley Beat 2

This is the second one in the Bo Diddley Beat pick series. Yesterday I had volume one, so if you didn't get that yet, you should. Lots of great songs in this serries, just because it's Bo Diddley's Beat. Pretty much any song with this beat will be at minimum passable, and probably quite good. Judge for yourself. Only Tom Petty and The Rolling Stones are bands that are repeated from volume one to two. So many to choose from. Let me know if you know any bands with songs that have that Bo Diddley Beat. Leave suggestions in the comments. Anyway, another couple dozen songs for your perusement.

Bo Diddley Beat 1

This will be a multi volume compilation. There is so much to pick from. Once you hear the Bo Diddley beat you can't unhear it. Some people have called it a variation of Shave and a Haircut, Two Bits. There is some truth to that but it is more. As you listen to these it will automatically trigger some memories of other songs with a similar beat. I hope you enjoy this selection of two dozen songs with that beat. Including the original Bo Diddley himself. Side note that has nothing to do with this pick and is me just name dropping. I got to have lunch with Bo Diddley. A BBQ, with "Mrs Bo" (the fourth one) and he was very gracious, very nice. It wasn't long after their marriage so kinda lovey dovey still. Got to see but not carry his guitar. Very good in concert, even then.

Feel Like It 2

It's not quite fair for me to call this pick Feel Like It 2, because it really doesn't match at all with feel like it 1. The songs are not based off the same seed song. These are completely separate. It is only because I am lazy and didn't want to make a new cover. I just added volume 2 to the other cover. And I didn't want to make a whole new folder. Like I said: lazy. I was calling it "newcomp" until the last second. That being said, I did use two songs that I considered for volume one (and rejected because I didn't think they quite fit) . They fit nicely here and I did like the songs. See if you can guess which two. Also at the time I was making this I realized that KC (Harry Casey) had written George McCrae's biggest hit and even recorded it and gave it to him. So I wanted to make a compilation with George, his wife Gwen (and her response song), a KC song and another song written by Casey for Jimmy Bo Horne. Not for any reason except I felt like it. There's also no reason to continue the numbering, but I did.

Faux Punk

This Pick is about Fake Punk or Faux Punk. Both bands and songs. So we have fake punk band and fake punk songs. To me if you have the word Punk in your title, it's probably not a punk song. It's Faux Punk. There's quite a few songs, that were good songs, that just weren't punk that follow that rule. Just listen to Van Halen. By no stretch of the imagination are they punk. But Iggy Pop was a punk, but the song he did with Teddybears. I'm sorry not punk. The Meatmen have a great track on here and it's almost punk, they're pretty punk, but almost is not good enough. Side note: I had some faux punk pants (ripped jeans) that were signed by the Clitboys. And if you know the Meatmen song, you'll get it. The Dead Milkmen were sometimes punk, Bitchin' Camaro probably counts, but this track is so not punk. Find the fake punk bands. There are a few. They aren't even real bands. See Fake Bands for more of that kind of stuff. Anyway, enjoy the fakeness.

Ok, one more in the Feel connection series. This one is You Feel. You could probably do a complete WTC with just covers of the Righteous Brothers. I had close to enough and I was barely looking. But that will have to be later. I included their version plus a special version. I added the G-Clefs (who you'll also find in a New Years Eve connection since it's obviously has a little Auld Lang Syne in it). Plus some fairly older tracks mixed with newer ones. It's amazing the things you feel when you let it. I am tired of looking at basically the same cover, so I will take a break for real this time on the Feel comps.

What's The Connection? Make You Feel 1

I'm not sure how many more of these Feel Connections I'm going to post in a row, but it kind of feels like I want to take a break. Yea I crack myself up with stupid stuff like that all day. This one is Make You Feel in the title. There are probably enough Sylvester covers to do one just on his song, but I tried to spread it around.. There are three of these that got this one going. Red Hot Chili Peppers. I've been a fan since the early days. Somewhere on this site are some stories of early concerts. Michael Jackson and War. For some reason I must be the only person who has all of War's albums. They are good, even if they didn't all have hits on them. Or maybe because they didn't. There's no Tower of Power on this compilation, but they are another one, like War who have really good albums even if there are no hits on the albums. And I don't need to explain Michael. We grew up together. Him rich and me, not at all.

What's The Connection? Can You Feel 1

Another one of the Feel series of connections (check the past couple of days if you missed any). This one has all Can You Feel in the title. The most obvious one being Elton John from the Disney film. Probably the last one they did that was great. Also going back to around that time The Capitol Steps doing their comedy political version. They had some funny tracks. Not sure what they are doing now. No one is in the mood for political humor, I guess. Kenny G doing his version of the same song, too. But some good tracks from Dub to House and much more. I hope you can feel it.
