What's The Connection? Kings 2

I did part 1 of this Kings connection in November of last year, but today is actually King's Day, so here is part two. Nothing special to post about these songs with King in the title, but I hope you get to have a little something Dutch in celebration of the King of Nederland. That's all. I suppose I should have more, but I am celebrating.

What's The Connection? Route 66 (repost)

Repost of this, because it's my 66th birthday today! I even updated the links! I understand that this connection is horribly inadequate. There are way too many versions of Route 66 or about Route 66 to really do this justice. But these are the main ones I have. I even put the Eagles and Jackson Browne in because it was about Route 66. Nat King Cole will always be my definitive but I must say that Depeche Mode has caught my ears in recent times with their version. I especially like the mashup version with their other hit. I first heard it on a single and I have loved it ever since. If you have another great version I didn't bring up on this list please leave it in the comments. I would love to hear it. Great song! I traveled along Route 66 before and it was very fun, even if it doesn't actually go all the way through any longer, the historic route is there. I stood on the corner in Winslow, Arizona and it was a site to see. I recommend that everyone do it at least once.

What's The Connection? Sixties

In just a day or two it will be my birthday (you can send presents of music if you want) and I am going to be 66. I started looking for songs with sixty six in the title (and there are a lot if you include Route 66 songs). Come back tomorrow for those. But I found quite a few with sixty in the title. So I am presenting some of them. This connection has nothing to do with birthdays, but here you go. It also has nothing to do with an "era" so hopefully you aren't confused anymore.

What's The Connection? Tax Day Repost

Repost: This is the day that's most hated by pretty much everyone, except for IRS agents and Tax Preparers. If you voted me in to be King, I would get rid of the federal income tax and abolish the IRS. There. Everyone feels better. It's fair to everyone. No one pays. Then we could charge for use. The states could still do what they want, tax or not. But this is not about politics. This is about music. Here are some songs about taxes in this What's The Connection? Let me know how you feel about these songs in the comments below. I don't care what you think about taxes themselves. But if we have to pay taxes, please do yourself a favor and read the book Tax Free Wealth by Tom Wheelwright. Happy Tax Day! If you want to change your tax, change your facts. BTW, If you need a good bookkeeper here's a plug for my wife who is excellent.

What's The Connection? Cherokee

There are a lot of ways to land on Cherokee, and this one covers more ground than most. It opens stretched all the way out, then snaps back into something more familiar and keeps shifting from there, bouncing between styles that don’t usually line up but manage to hold together anyway. The Indian connection is easy, but the approaches are all over the place, sometimes straight, sometimes barely related at all. Even Cher makes sense once you get there, which is kind of the whole point.

What's The Connection? Get Up 2

Same idea, just with a little less discipline this time. It starts in a groove you recognize, then gradually pulls in sounds that don’t usually sit next to each other but manage to make sense anyway. The Connection is still obvious, but the ways artists get there are all over the place, from tight funk to looser swings and a few moments that feel like they might fall apart if you look at them too closely. Some tracks push, some resist, and a few seem to be negotiating the whole Get Up thing in real time, which is exactly what keeps it interesting.

What's The Connection? Groovy 1

This Groovy connection runs from sunshine pop to punk to dub to Texas boogie, and the word shows up in every single title whether it earned it or not. Some of these tracks ARE in the groove and many might be groovy, too. Some of them are just using the word the way everyone did for about a decade, like a verbal tic nobody could shake. I always wished I was groovy. I drove a VW bus for a while, which should have qualified me, but I'm not sure I ever really pulled it off. The racing Bug definitely didn't count. What does count is how totally groovy the cover is!

What's The Connection? Groove 2

Sixteen more, and the word still isn't tired. This batch runs the full map — rock, funk, reggae, zydeco, soul, and a little something from the bayou — and every single one of them has groove right there in the title where you can see it. Some of these are obvious. Some of them you might not have heard in years, or maybe ever. That's kind of the point. The Salsoul Orchestra will tell you it doesn't have to be funky to be a groove, and honestly, this whole volume proves it. There will be a third connection, eventually. The word has more left in it than I think.

What's The Connection? Groove 2

17 Ace Frehley - New York Groove
18 Talking Heads - Double Groove (Unfinished Outtake)

What's The Connection? Groove 1

Not "groovy." Not "groovin'." Not even "grooves." Just groove — singular, present tense, like it's happening right now, because it is. They aren't all funky. Not all of them are even dancefloor. But every single one of them has that thing — that locked-in, can't-explain-it feeling that makes you close your eyes and nod your head whether you're in a club or your kitchen. That's the groove (at least the word) and it doesn't care what genre you filed it under. I had to start somewhere, and groove felt like the right word to open with. There's a reason it became its own language — musicians talk about being in it, losing it, finding it again. There will be more of these connections, the word is big enough to go a few rounds. But this is where it starts.

What's The Connection? Brother Bands

Today is my late brother’s birthday, and this Connection is in his honor. I’ve brought together a bunch of bands that carry the name of the bond we shared—whether by blood or by spirit. Not that he would have loved all these bands (he wouldn't have) but to honor him, I didn't just hit shuffle. I meticulously aligned every track by key and tempo so the journey is seamless, flowing from one heartbeat to the next without a single jolt. Brotherhood is a frequency that never fades. We always loved each other even though we fought a lot until we grew up. This mix is my way of staying on that wavelength with him. Happy Birthday—this one is for you, Eric!

Uninterrupted Silent Sustained Reading 2 (Authors)

If the first session of USSR was about the act of reading, this one is about the names on the spine. I still remember those hours in school where we all had to be quiet and at least pretend to read while the teachers took a breather. I still try to knock out at least one book a week, though the reading glasses make it a chore these days. This run gets heavy fast, moving from the Americana of Kerouac and Whitman into a dark basement with Sylvia Plath followed by a double-shot of Hemingway. That Blue Clocks Green track is the real jolt—it’s got a happy synth-pop rhythm, but the lyrics are essentially a suicide note. This Pick is for the next time you feel like digging through the library instead of the crates.

Happy Holi!

Happy Holi! Here's a crazy pick that is a lot like the chaos of all that color flying around. Interestingly, the acronym for the rainbow is usually ROYGBIV (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet), but in my school the honors class had a club and they called it Vibgyor. Somehow, I was in it. I ended up getting kicked out for being disruptive and smart alecky, which is actually a lot like the disruptive nature of the holiday itself. This is a Connection of songs that are just as disruptive, with a whole rainbow of flavors ending in the most Holi way I could think of.

Happy Holi!

What's The Connection? Talk 1

I was digging through some folders and kept tripping over the same word. There isn't a real connection here, it’s just twenty tracks where people are either talking or telling someone else to shut up. It’s a dead-on connection for the speakers, even if it's really just all talk in the end. You get everything from the art-school side like Brian Eno and Cabaret Voltaire to the straight-up radio noise of Salt 'n' Pepa and Toby Keith. If you want to keep the conversation going, I’ve got Some Kind Of Talk posted over at the other link.

What's The Connection? Talk 1

What's The Connection? Trouble Double

Here's another fun connection in the series: From classic blues heartache to dubstep drops and bubble-popping chaos, Every track here doubles down on 'Double Trouble' (or bubbles it up). Trouble comes in pairs... and ends with a burst! Funny how many songs with the same or nearly the same title are completely different. I added the Bubble variations at the end just for fun. I put Team Rocket on the cover since they are the epitome of Double Trouble in the Pokemon universe. Grab the playlist, crank it up, and let the double dose of trouble roll.

What's The Connection? Suck 1

This is one of those connections that really suck. I am sure you will agree that you would have to be a sucker to not think that's true. All that to just get a link in to a previous, somewhat related pick. The hoops I jump through to do that are sometimes amazing. I made this while I was making the other one and it's the leftover sucky ones. I say that but each is a pretty darn good track, just all over the place like usual with these. Notice that the cover is very similar to the other one with octopus parts inside. I really like the Milo track.

What's The Connection? Suck 1

01 Nine Inch Nails - Suck

What's The Connection? Sweetheart

Happy Valentine's Day! This connection (I almost called it schatje, because I am partially Dutch) all has songs with Sweetheart in the title. I have a previous one about sweetest songs. But this wtc goes from the Golden Age to Teen Idol & Doo-Wop through traditional, soul and R&B right through my modern post -punk deconstruction where you say don't dream it, be it. Which sounds a little like a lot of scholastic bullshit. They're just cool songs and have nothing to do with the changing mores (or better: a-mores) of intimacy throughout the years.
