Spooky 2

This Halloween pick is still not the really scary stuff. It's more fun, but definitely not really young kids fun. So in the beginning of the night and after twilight. We usually get about a hundred or so kids (plus parents and dogs) trick or treating on Halloween. Usually the youngest when it is barely dark and then the bigger groups of kids with friends and family as it gets dark for sure and that's when we add this into the mix. Not sure if I will post the next couple of picks until next year, but that's where it starts getting more scary than fun. You can tell from the tracks that this was made a long time ago.

Spooky 1

This is the first Halloween CD I ever made. I had some cassettes before, but I turned them into this CD and now playlist. Come Halloween, first my mom would make us costumes, then as we got older we would make our own and we decorated the house somewhat. At minimum a carved pumpkin and some lights. Gave out candy and all that. And we always had some Halloween effects LP that we would play (after the youngest kids had come and gone.) To this day I still do that. We decorate, but mostly on the day. We transform our house into a scary version of itself, play Halloween music (including these songs) through speakers on the front lawn. And purple and orange lights, UV  lights, fog etc. And then we hand out candy and glow necklaces to all the kids. This pick is for earlier in the night.

Detroit Pick

Not a Connection the way I call them connections. But my Pick of songs from bands that were from Detroit. I didn't include the typical Motown Songs or bands although a couple here may have had an album out on the label. Mostly rockin' bands, but you could call a couple of the tracks crossover? Doesn' matter I wasn't that picky and I didn't check too much. I'm sure someone will fact check me. And I hope someone gives me some suggestions for other picks to come. I will probably post some Motown picks at one time or another and even though it's a Detroit thing, I always see Motown as a sound. An International sound. I know that isn't correct, but it is how I see it. I do love Motown and I visited the studio in Detroit (one of the coolest places ever - you can feel the history.) But not featured here. Check out the reason that Detroit is about Rock and Roll.

What's The Connection? City

Specifically these are songs with City in the title, but not names of cities. I should do that sometime. There are some famous cities with lots of songs about them: Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Las Vegas, etc. Some with a lot less, but still maybe enough: San Fernando Valley? Who knows. I'll have to start looking. Two songs on this connection do not have the word City in the title. Track one and track eighteen. But they are so obviously songs about cities. The former about San Francisco and the latter about Detroit and the lyrics do use City a bit in each. If you are from the Bay Area (not a transplant and certainly not from LA) you know that San Francisco is never called San Francisco, never Frisco, never SF. It's always The City. With caps on "The." Even when you say it out loud. In Southern California, they always call it Frisco (even though it is wrong). There are tons more we could add to this playlist pick, but you will have to fill it out in the comments and maybe I do part two.

Go For Baroque 2

Here's the other side of the cassette I started posting yesterday. Read the story of the pick in the other post. Here I will say that the cover was not originally designed by me. She designed the cassette cover. I scanned the words and used them over the notes that I found in some clipart. It was all hand drawn originally, but it didn't fit the new format. So I took what I could use and recreated the rest to make it fit. Not sure why, but I had the hardest time tracking down some of the songs on this side. I didn't have access to the original classical records she used, so I had to figure it out from the notes on the cassette, which did have some detail. And then began the tracking. Let me know what you think about these versions and tell me if you think you know some better versions I can listen to.

Go For Baroque 1

This was a cassette that an ex-college girlfriend made for me. This is side 1 of the cassette. She played violin and I knew next to nothing about classical music. She went home for the summer and we sent each other cassette compilations. She had some good ones. It took me awhile to recreate this, because I wanted to make sure I got the same sources she did for each track on her pick. I understand that the conductor and the symphony makes a real difference. I can't say if she chose these exact recordings because they happened to be in her parents' record collection or because they were her favorite versions of all time. I have no idea and it would take me years of figuring out which versions I like best. I am not that versed in classical music. Although way more than I was in the 80's. Her influence. I started making sure that at least one choice of new music per month was a classical record, So I ended up with quite a bit of that genre. Still am not the connoisseur although I work at it occasionally. Then I sucked at being a boyfriend (too self obsessed) Probably still do, but I am more aware of it now. Either way, she did make some great compilations before she figured that out.

Divine Pick

This has become much more controversial. No idea why. Well, maybe it's because people are way too serious about things and not at all serious about their own responsibility. I am staying out of the political part of it. What am I saying? Of course I am not going to do that. I love this. I know what a woman is. No one needs to explain that. And I have no issues with whatever anyone wants to do. How you dress or how you "feel" is none of anyone's business. Just don't smush my face in it. Don't force it. You don't get special privileges for how you feel.  Transvestites, Oh My! That being said. Men dressing up as women has been around since before Shakespeare. No biggie. I loved John Water's movies (Divine), Rocky Horror Picture Show, David Bowie, Sandy Duncan (Peter Pan), the Original Bird Cage, Milton Berle, Flip Wilson etc etc. And there is a great deal of music associated with all of that - some in this pick. Do not like trans story hour at the library or a curriculum of grooming kids, but I did take my daughter years ago to see a live version of Rocky Horror Show. Gave her a squirt gun and some toast and newspapers, etc. Like I said, don't smush it in my face and I'm okay with men dressing as women and women dressing like men. And it is Halloween coming up. Men, dress like the Queen for all I care (or Princess Di). But you are not a woman.

Classical Gas Pick

These are all songs with some sort of link to classical music. Elements of classical music, based on a classical song etc. Not just featuring violins or an orchestra on this pick. For instance the Toy Dolls play a classical song, but they do not sound like a classical orchestra (at all). There are plenty more that could be considered that I did not include like songs that are based on a classical melody, but were completely changed. I also added some songs that just mentioned classical artists: Like Play Bach, Rock Me Amadeus, etc. I had several more that I could have added, but I limited it to what fits on a CD. So you miss Gazebo's I Like Chopin. Anyway there are tons more. Somewhere on  Butterboy's blog he has a multi-disc compilation with lots more. I made this one before I ever saw his and I tried not to look at his version as I was writing this, so it would be just what I remember when I put this together. After I heard Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time, I thought it was brilliant and predicted that a lot more bands would try to do songs like that. I was wrong. some had done it before and some after, but no rush to emulate that.

What Is The Connection? Ass Rump Booty Bottom

In other words: songs about the butt. This is not the end of this connection. I'm sure there will be more butt to come. If you are offended by this compilation playlist, sorry I'm cheeky like that. The cover is made from a section of the Queen mini poster that came with their single Bicycle Race. You can guess what was on the other side, behind the front side... I crack myself up. Anyway there have been a lot of songs over the years about bottoms. A lot more lately, but I tried to spread it around among the genres, so you have country and disco and rock and rap and blues and edm etc. I know there are tons more, so forgive me if I skipped your favorite ass song, just leave the booty in the comments and I'll look at it. What Is The Connection? Futbol (Soccer)

I was brought up on Futbol or Soccer. I had a ball in my crib. Played through college until I had a knee injury and then I played in the old man cigar and beer league, was a ref, and coached my kid's team for many years. And now I just watch and cheer (and yell). Always was on the lookout for good songs about soccer. So here is my connection of picks for a playlist about soccer (futbol). Play it before a game, during a game will be hard or after a game. Or when you just want to listen. Some of these are soccer anthems for specific teams or leagues, some just about the game or even one about a player. Please tell me if you have any that you don't see here, I am always looking for more.

I have no idea why it is going this direction. I'm randomly picking a connection that is finished and after getting drunk, drinking, wine, driving, coffee it just went to Tears. Can't help it. Some of these favorites of mine are all over the map disco to punk to crooner to classic rock to oldies and more. But I tell you I like all these songs. And all these artists. I just like a diverse set of music. You will just have to deal with it. Tell me your favorite tear jerkers. I'll look for them in the comments. What's The Connection? Wine

I guess I'm on some kind of drive here. Let's pretend it just happened by accident. One of my favorite wine events is a thing called Passport weekend in Dry Creek, Sonoma, California. It has nothing to do with this Connection (other than it is wine related). But, besides having some of the best red wine wineries in California, it is a fun event. If you have never gone, first it sells out way in advance, so get tickets or get on the waiting list way in advance. Second there are a ton of great wineries that participate. And you can visit all of them using their passport. It's fun filling their passport with stamps from each winery. And each winery has some kind of music or entertainment as well as tasting  and special deals on their wines. Make sure you get someone to drive and don't make it too big of a vehicle, or you will have a limo parked down the road as you walk up and down long curvy driveways. Have fun with both the compilation playlist and the event. In fact play it as you get driven around for a couple of days.

What's The Connection? Coffee

Many people's favorite morning cup of java, coffee, joe is a great way to start a Connection. Not all of these songs are ones that I would play everywhere but they are good when you are Jones-ing for some caffeine. Some of these songs have multiple versions, but this is what is in this connection. One of my favorites that didn't make the cut is Stan Ridgway's version of The Coffee Song. Anyway the cover doesn't say coffee on it anywhere. Confusing unless you understand that Joe is another way to say coffee. Have a cup of joe. Tell me your favorite songs about coffee in the comments (make sure you also tell me what you think of Limbomaniacs Caffe Latte I think not a lot of people know that band/song.)

What Is The Connection? Drive

A few of my favorite songs with Drive or Driving in the title. I know it's in bad taste to have this Connection right after the Drinking and Drunk ones, but it's my sick sense of humor working on overtime. It's not really funny, but that's the way it goes. So many songs about driving that I can only scratch the surface with this pick. So add your favorites in the comments below. I am most likely to make another volume of this, I have several ready to go. I really like this compilation.

What Is The Connection? Drinking

I probably should have done yesterday's post today and this one yesterday. After all drinking precedes getting drunk. Oh Well! Lots of good drinking songs here on this connection. Mostly about the positives of drinking, although a couple are about how the drinking didn't help. I probably should add warnings to some of these posts about the dangers of drinking, but instead I will just wait on the driving songs for a little bit. OK, I'm joking. But everyone should know by now. Call a Lyft or Uber or a sober friend or parent. If you are going to drink, these are some great tracks for starting (or continuing). I am not encouraging you to drink, but if you are drinking, these are some of the songs you should listen to. When I drank, I preferred Tequila, Rum or Beer, but I included a few other favorites in here. And yes, I know I have tracks 11 and 15 both in there. Not the other version.

What's The Connection? Drunk

Okay, I readily admit that there are a million songs about being drunk and that I barely have scratched the surface of songs with Drunk in the title. Obviously this Connection is about being or getting drunk. Yesterday's cover had me on it, but today's I just nabbed a picture off the internet of a really drunk girl puking in the toilet. No puking songs, though (although that might be interesting. I can think of the Dead Milkmen already). I am not sure if there are more country songs about being drunk than any other genre, but I bet it would be close. Country drunk songs really get in to it though. I'm sure you know some better drunk songs and if you do leave them in the comments and I will consider them for volume two. Just to be clear: I have been very drunk. I have been with other people who have been very drunk. It is always good form to take care of drunk people. Protect them! Do not take advantage of them. They won't know that you were helping them, but you will know. They will eventually learn to control themselves. Help them. That is all.

What's The Connection? Freaks

I know it is too early to post Halloween picks, and this comp is not really Halloween. The cover is a photo  from a dance party where everyone dressed up in western wear. It was fun. I had already made the Rock, Freak, Boogie comp and there is some overlap, but doing just a freak connection made sense, so this was born. I had to find some way to put Cabaret Voltaire on another pick. I doubt much of this was played at the party we had. In fact it was probably none of these. But I do like these freaky songs. There really are so many of them to choose from. Leave your choices in the comments. This goes beyond any specific genre, so enjoy the diversity.

What's The Connection? Fight For Your Right

I like this Connection. It is guaranteed to piss one person off or another. But fighting for your right to free speech means you will hear things you don't like or don't agree with. The whole point is to do the opposite of what Twisted Sister says and take it. I don't mean agree with it, but to understand the other person's viewpoint even if you don't agree. It's hard to do sometimes. And we all have felt some of these emotions or wanted to express ourselves over at least one of these songs major themes. So don't listen if you get offended easily. Because you will get offended by something in here. I'm posting these because they are my pick of ways to express yourself: healthy and unhealthy. I love the songs even if I may not agree with all of the sentiments. It's a free country (mostly) still. Tell me if I missed any. This could be considered a companion disc to Mostly Peaceful, and there are no overlaps. I have another one coming up that could be considered another companion, but you will have to wait for that one, but to tease it, it's not my pick: it's Santana's.

What's The Connection? Fat (Buddah Belly)

This post is not politically correct. Sorry. But it is fun. It started as Buddah Belly, because that's what my daughter called my belly (yes, I have a fat belly, although it has gotten less fat when I stopped drinking beer). We had one of those Buddah statues and we would rub the belly for luck on the way out. You can rub my belly for luck if you want. I don't mind. Anyway, these are songs about being fat. Fat bellies, fat butts, fat men, fat women. All my favorite fat songs. This is my pick so it is what it is. I'm sure you have your favorite fat songs, so I would love to hear about any I didn't post. I had a few leftover after making this Connection, maybe they will make it on the next fat WTC. One of then is Crust "Diet Tray" it's hilarious and great. One of my favorite artists is Brian Eno and luckily he has a fat song that is great (it's on this compilation). And I also loved the Queen song, as well as the poster that went along with it (although it's also for Bicycle Race.)

What's The Connection? Words

I was remembering this WTC? as I was thinking up a new one (related sort of). But only one song that reminded me of this one. So I cleaned it up and put up here for you. See, the cluttered mind of mine produces an extra playlist compilation for you. I'd like to say this Connection started because of the Beatles or Brian Eno or Yes, but it wasn't. It wasn't even Tom Tom Club, who I also like much. But it was because I have a daughter. And back when she was younger I watched all sorts of crazy movies with her. Lots of Jackie Chan, of course, but also every young girl movie that came out. I probably know more about Mary Kate and Ashley than I want to admit. When Josie and the Pussycats came out, I had to watch it. First, I loved the cartoon and comic as a kid, second it was a girl power movie. And I loved the music. What can I say? The vocals by Letters to Cleo singer Kay Hanley helped. And knowing that Cheryl Ladd was in the original band (as Cherie Moor aka Cheryl Stoppelmoor) didn't hurt. She was, after all, my favorite Angel. BTW, one of these tracks has the B-52's on it.

What's The Connection? Words

New Prog vol 4

Not as many really long songs on this volume (see volume 3 yesterday for the longest I picked). Volume one of New Prog is here. Two bands are repeated on this series playlist so far. But I will have more if I ever get to finish volume five. Encourage me (or discourage me) in the comments. What would you add to these compilations? I can tell you that I have over two hours more close to ready to go. But they aren't yet. And yes there are at least two more tracks from two of the bands in this series.  I won't tell you who, though. Leave comments and tell me what you liked. One thing I added in this one is a playlist for all four volume and a text list of all four as well.

New Prog vol 4

15 Glass Hammer - A Bitter Wind
16 Haken - Crystallised
17 Ayreon - Day Sixteen-Loser
18 IQ - Frequency
19 Solstice - Earthsong
20 Arena - Smoke And Mirrors
21 Collage - Living In The Moonlight
22 Liquid Tension Experiment - Acid Rain
23 Pallas - Cut And Run
24 Opeth - Windowpane
25 Spock's Beard - Gibberish

New Prog Pick vol 2-3

I put two volumes in this post because volume 3 only has two songs. They're long and each volume fits on a single CD. I am probably not going to talk about each track in this series, except for one on volume 2. The band is Glass Hammer which is where Yes got their new singer Jon Davison. I like him. Not just a good singer and fits in the Yes mold completely (I know there are some people who will never get over the loss of Jon Anderson - who I also love - But Davison is good). He's also a really nice guy. Got to hang out with him on his first Yes cruise and he is really nice. Got to hang out in a bar with him. That cruise is also where I got exposed to Glass Hammer. And they are really good. If you like this pick, go get the other albums. They are worth it. If you already know the band, then you know what I am talking about. The covers of both volumes are in the zips.

New Prog Pick vol 2

10 Ritual - A Dangerous Journey
11 Cathedral - The Garden
12 Glass Hammer - The Knight Of The North

New Prog Pick vol 3
13 Beardfish - Sleeping In Traffic
14 Dream Theater - Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence (Full)

New Prog Pick vol 1

There is no real genre named New Prog, but I use it to designate newer bands (as opposed to the classic prog bands). You may disagree with the term or even the bands I pick for this four volume set (maybe more to come), but these tracks are great. I kept each volume to the length of a CD, although if you wanted to, you could easily make this into one play list. Today volume one. Keep an eye open for the next three volumes in the next day or so.

New Prog Pick vol 1

01 Porcupine Tree - Trains
02 Karnivool - Themata
03 Pineapple Thief - Shoot First
04 Dream Theater - Pull Me Under
05 Riverside - Out Of Myself
06 Transatlantic - In Held (Twas) In I
07 Anathema - Fragile Dreams
08 Steven Wilson - Harmony Korine
09 Big Big Train - The Underfall Yard

Black + White (CAVR Pick) 2

What I love about other people's picks is that they never pick the same songs that I would pick. It makes life interesting. Look at yesterday's post if you didn't already to find part 1 and the story of who's behind this compilation cassette. The original cassette had a black front with silver metallic writing on it. Looked pretty cool. I couldn't quite get that same look when I made it into a CD cover so, this is what you get. Still looks kinda cool. Now that you've had the chance to see both sides of the cassette. How would you have organized it? I sort of feel that a song on this side could have been traded with a song on the other to more match the Black + White theme, but I am definitely used to it in this order. Leave a comment and tell me what you think.

Black + White (CAVR Pick) 2

09 Bauhaus - Stigmata Martyr
10 Death In June - Fields
11 The Smiths - Stretch Out And Wait
12 Velvet Underground - There She Goes Again

14 Étant Donnés - Le Coeur Sert Le Corps
15 The Cure - Give Me It
16 Klaus Nomi - Keys Of Life
17 Magazine - Permafrost
18 Inflatable Boy Clams - Boystown
19 Marine Girls - In Love
20 Cabaret Voltaire - Photophobia
21 Tuxedomoon - Holiday For Plywood

Black + White (CAVR Pick) 1

Mostly I post my own compilations, but every now and again I post someone else's pick. This one was a cassette made by my ex-wife. Two parts to it. I post side one today and side 2 tomorrow. Yes, we still get along. Both remarried. She had full range of my album collection for years and this is one of her picks from that collection. I'm guessing this is the "white" side, since it's a little more light and happy. The darker side will be tomorrow. I hope you enjoy this. And I know, I don't usually put two songs from the same artist on the same compilation, let alone right after each other, but this is how she had the cassette. I also don't know if I would consider Tones On Tail to be on this side. How would you organize this playlist?

Black + White (CAVR Pick) 1

01 Dead Or Alive - Brand New Lover
02 ABC - When Smokey Sings
03 Bananarama - Venus
04 Tones on Tail - Twist
05 Blancmange - Don't Tell Me
06 The Communards - Never Can Say Goodbye (Shep Pettibone Mix)
07 Madonna - Holiday
08 Madonna - Everybody

Billy Preston Pick

Sometimes called the fifth Beatle, but generally just an amazing artist, Billy Preston played with some artists that I had no idea about. I compiled some of my favorite solo picks here, added some Beatles tracks together and solo and threw in a couple surprising guest spots (surprising to me, at least.) I put in two versions of You Are So Beautiful because I like the song and to hear both versions is interesting to say the least. Same with the song Get Back. I know there are other tracks that I am missing (be sure to mention them in the comments.) Hope you like what I did add.

Billy Preston Pick

01 Johnny Cash - Personal Jesus
02 Neil Diamond - Hell Yeah

Who Dunnit? 4

This is the last of this pick. Volume 4 of the series. Not because I don't have more, but because I haven't finished cleaning them up and assembling them. And by now, I'm sure you have a few suggestions. Do NOT include any that are on the Heart Full Of Soul compilation as that is a separate category for me. Although there are some great covers that sound totally different than the originals on that playlist. Obviously I know about the artists on these picks that have multiple albums of covers. This volume also has some interesting mashups, which technically are not covers, but they made some completely different songs out of them. I have all the Bossa Nova albums that cover different eras in a bossa nova style. They are great. And several of the country bands that do the same. If you haven't seen the artist on these lists and you really like them, let me know. I want my socks to blown off!

Who Dunnit? 4

01 Dan Finnerty - Candy Shop

Who Dunnit? 3

More covers, from more bands. Yet another from the amazing Storm and the Balls. I discovered Storm Large as she opened for someone else. I arrived early to the show (which I rarely do) and found Storm. I must say it was a happy accident. This was before all her TV fame and all that. I was mesmerized. What an amazing performance. I could not take my attention off her. And then getting the album and discovering amazing covers in mashups like the ones on this series. Wow. A couple other picks to mention. Barenaked Lady Kevin Hearn's Thin Buckle doing War Pigs was a fun time . Saw him do that live on a Barenaked cruise. Beatnix doing Zeppelin songs as if they were the Beatles. I wish I had more of that. A couple of tracks from the amazing movie Welcome To Woop Woop. Go see it. And lastly, I need to mention the greatness of Senor Coconut. He's great. Never saw him live, but I wish I did.

Who Dunnit? 2

Volume 2 in the series of covers mostly done in different styles than the original. Pat Boone and Paul Anka both had albums out of rockin songs done in "swing" style (sorta). More Big Daddy with fifties rock and roll and several jazzy versions of new wave songs. Other bands that started to do this type of cover is Nouvelle Vague with some Bossa Nova versions of New Wave songs. And Richard Cheese doing comedy parody versions as a lounge singer. Add in the various others that I just have collected and you have my next pick.

Who Dunnit? 1

I like cover versions of songs. That's clear if you have been watching this space for any length of time. I especially like cover versions that do not sound at all like the original. Doesn't mean that I don't like original versions. I do. But there is something about an artist completely re-interpreting a song. This pick is that completely. Cover versions where you have to think, "Is this the original or was the original the original?". For me it really started with a band called Big Daddy. They were on Rhino records and they had a backstory that they were a 50's rock band that got lost somewhere for thirty years or so and came back to find all this new music, but they did the music in the style they were used to. Some great songs of the 80's done in "Sock Hop" style. Some really great covers (with just a few misses). Overall great. If you look for that kind of stuff, you find it everywhere. Here a few of my picks of those kind of songs where you wonder Who Dunnit.

Who Dunnit? 1

19 Lesley Gore - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
20 Big Daddy - Super Freak
21 Richard Cheese - Let's Get It Started
22 Señor Coconut & His Orchestra - Beat It

Pol's Country Pick 3

This is the last of this series for now, I actually have more to pick from but they are not assembled. See the previous two days for how and why I started this series. For this one I want to mention the previously posted Country Stones compilation. I made that compilation after these three in the series. One of the "bonus" tracks in the Stones pick I already had on Volume 2 of this pick. Not an accident. And if you look at the covers of each they all match, just with an extra set of lips on the Stones volume. They are meant to go together. What I haven't posted yet is my first one. My first country-ish pick. Made way before these and I did not make it to match. One day I will post that one. In the meantime, this one will have to do. Leave comments about what your first country song was that made you realize you liked the genre. Or were you brought up a little bit country?
