Gambling Connection (Songs about gambling)

Take a chance on this gambling connection, bet money, roll the dice, pick a card, nice and easy and hit the jackpot, if you're feeling lucky. There's a million of these, but here's my pick to make this Gambling What's The Connection. Or maybe it's just some cool songs with a theme. You may want to search the blog for some songs about Luck (I'm guessing you'll strike gold somewhere near St. Patrick's Day.

Collins X Pick (Phil Collins in Brand X)

A couple of posts ago, you got some Phil Collins in various appearances. This time the pick is Brand X. A progressive Jazz Fusion band that for some time featured Phil Collins. Here is an introduction to the band Brand X, with Phil Collins. He was with the band throughout most of the later 70's (and appeared on some much later reunion tours). But the best stuff from the band, according to me, are the albums represented here of the late seventies. If you like these songs, definitely pick up the albums, as they are quite good. You will notice that the cover I designed has the five main album covers of Brand X where Collins played included as part of the design.

Collins X Pick

01 Brand X - Euthanasia Waltz
02 Brand X - Nuclear Burn
03 Brand X - Born Ugly
04 Brand X - Sun in the Night
05 Brand X - Why Should I Lend You Mine (When You've Broken Yours Off Already...)
06 Brand X - Disco Suicide
07 Brand X - Malaga Virgen
08 Brand X - Don't Make Waves
09 Brand X - Not Good Enough, See Me
10 Brand X - Voidarama
11 Brand X - Triumphant Limp

Beautiful Guitar Solos 4

The last (for a while) of the Beautiful Guitar solos picks. A couple on this volume were planned from the beginning, but a couple were added as I was releasing these originally. That's what happens when you comment and leave your favorites in the comments. I had already made a Guitars comp (loud shredding guitars), a Girls and Guitars pick. And Picks that featured Sax, Bass, Drums etc. All coming at one point or another. But I still always come back to these four. Play them at night or the morning when I want something beautiful played. I hope you listen to them as you get ready for bed (sleep or otherwise). They've been god to me. BTW, did you notice that each one of these has a different guitar on the cover, even though they look similar?

Beautiful Guitar Solos 4

49 Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
50 Steve Vai - Sisters
51 Beatles - Something
52 Emerson Lake & Palmer - From the Beginning
53 Genesis - Firth Of Fifth

Phil Collins Pick

You could put this into a family pick, because it follows Phil Collins' appearances on various other band tracks. Obviously Genesis, Brand X and solo. Some he sings on, some he drums, but there is a Phil Collins feel to most of these songs. It may take you a couple of listens, but he's in there. This gets pretty diverse. I mean Adam Ant and Philip Bailey don't play the same kind of music as Camel and Eno. So, I think you will like the journey with Phil. I'm sure I missed a few tracks and obviously I had to pare down to one from each of his ventures. If I missed your favorite, let me know in the comments below. Click on the cool album cover. And keep checking back, because eventually I will post a more comprehensive beginners look at Brand X. Very cool.

15 Phillip Bailey - Easy Lover

Beautiful Guitar Solos 3

A continuation of the Beautiful Guitar Solos playlist pick. This third volume has a couple of tracks that were suggested by guitar playing friends, plus more Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. I had already picked Pink Floyd, but several people seconded the tribute to Syd "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" to make that a must have track. These may not be the fastest, or loudest guitar solos, but they definitely are the most beautiful. See if you agree. There will be another volume coming, so look for that too. And if you have a favorite, whether it made this playlist or not, be sure to include it in the comments.

Acoustic Zep (Led Zeppelin's acoustic tracks)

Like the earlier Pretty Sabbath pick and the ELP Barrelhouse Ragtime pick this playlist takes a side of a band and highlights it. In this case it is the pretty, acoustic sounds of Led Zeppelin. Page, a master at guitar, is amazing acoustically. These tracks on this pick prove it. From almost every year and album there was a track you could play for your parents (to show it wasn't all noise). Things are not so different today. The music changes, but the dynamic between kids and parents and their choices of music doesn't change much. Our job as parents is to expose kids to a variety of music, so it isn't lost, but also to keep an open mind about the "noise" they listen to. You might not like the parental advice, but the playlist is great. So don't mind me and just listen.

16 Led Zeppelin - The Battle Of Evermore
17 Led Zeppelin - Your Time Is Gonna Come
18 Led Zeppelin - Hey Hey What Can I Do

Beautiful Guitar Solos 2

This is part two of the Beautiful Guitar Solos playlist pick. The idea was to get the most beautiful solos, not the most rockin'. I started this thinking of three different solos. Two were in volume one: Eddie Hazel's "Maggot Brain" where George Clinton told him to imagine his mom dying right before playing. And the other in volume one was Frank Zappa "Watermelon In Easter Hay". The third is in this volume and set the tone for what I was looking for. That was Santana "Flor D'Luna (Moonflower)" So that gives you an idea of what I was trying to achieve. The people I asked were all given those parameters. And there is one track on this volume that I had forgotten about that was recommended to add to this pick. That was the track from Carl Verheyen Band. Beautiful! More Coming!

Two, Two Mints In One (Songs that repeat a word twice in the title)

Some Connections are easy to pick, some are harder. You can't just search for doubles in song titles using regular search. Anyway, here is my pick of this What's the Connection? I named it Two Mints In One, because of the old commercial with twins in them. I'm too clever for myself. It doesn't really make sense unless you are me. Sometime in the future look for Three being the magic number. Three word songs that repeat the same word three times. I just have to get it ready. If you haven't seen what I do to prepare my mp3's, then you should look at that, read the complete instructions. In the meantime, please, please enjoy enjoy. I know I missed some, so if you think of any, let me know in the comments. BTW, this post was Inspired by Manolis who posted up a great comp when words are hard to find at ButterBoy..

Beautiful Guitar Solos 1

This was pretty easy. I picked what I thought were some songs that had the most beautiful guitar solos of all time. I then asked friends, musicians, DJ's what their favorite Beautiful Guitar Solos were (I got a few more that I had forgotten.) And came up with this pick. Several already finished in the series and more to be added. This first volume will have to do for now. I am putting it up now, because another cool site (ButterBoy) had a compilation playlist from Paszek that reminded me of this one. That one was Beautiful Instrumentals. Quite good. Go get that one too, and keep a lookout for the other volumes in this series coming.

This connection is all about Puzzles. A couple of crosswords and some just puzzling and one that is a riddle about the puzzle of life. So one thing led to another and here I am posting this up. Nederlandse Pick (songs from the Netherlands)

Songs/bands from the Netherlands that I like. Some sung in English and the others in Dutch. I actually learned how to speak "Dutch" first. I learned English (or rather American as a second language). I am a first generation American and proud of it. My mother fully from the Netherlands (I have family that stretches back for hundreds of years in one area of Nederland) and my father from a Dutch colony that is in the South Pacific. Yes, my parents had a mixed marriage. Anyway, that's besides the point. I have always looked for songs from what most people call Holland. Here were some of my favorites when I made this compilation playlist years ago. I pulled it out because someone named Peerke posted up a Belgian Pop comp on ButterBoy's site and made me think of this pick. Either way, genres all over the map. I just like these songs.

21 Heideroosjes - Dan Breekt De Hel Los!

Am I Bent Pick (ambient chill music)

Around this time, I was noticing that all these places were starting to play "Chill" or "Ambient" music. To me up to then, "Ambient" meant Brian Eno "Music For Airports". Anyway several artists I like made ambient remixes or just ambient songs. I was listening to The Orb and Art Of Noise and told myself I could make a better pick, yet slightly bent version of Ambient, therefore the play on the word "Ambient" = "Am I Bent". Too clever for myself. Either way this was my attempt using the songs in my collection at the time to put together this playlist. I was inspired to post this because of someone else (George at Groovy Library) posting a compilation (actually two) on his website that I really liked. Not the same, but the same feeling. So I looked for this to be able to post it. Later, much later I made the Slow Poof picks, so those are kind of related. Check them out if you haven't already.

Luck Connection (Songs with Luck in them)

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I guess you are lucky today, because here is my pick of lucky songs. A wide variety of songs about Luck. Lots of clovers all over the cover. Again nothing to do with St. Patrick or really the Irish, but somehow luck has been associated with the Irish. Good for them. Anyway, a couple of covers that I thought were worthy of inclusion instead of the originals. I never was a huge fan of Paul McCartney's Luck of the Irish, so when Japanese band Shonen Knife did a good cover of it, I had to include it. And besides I already had another McCartney track. A song or two from the movies. Some country, some blues, some dance, some jazz, some prog. Something for everyone. I hope it brings you lots of luck!

Celtic Pick 2 (Irish music for St. Patrick's Day)

More Irish music for you to enjoy this St. Patrick's Day. If you're lucky there will be even more tomorrow. This continues this playlist pick. Most of it is Irish bands, a couple of songs about Ireland (or associated Irish events). You can't really call Johnny Cash Irish now can you? But his pick in here is perfect for St Patrick's Day. There's a couple of doubles in these two volumes, but only because I had to. They just fit in perfectly. Either way, drink a good Irish beer, make sure it's not got green dye in it and walk home or take Lyft.

Celtic Pick (Irish music for St. Patrick's Day)

To get you thinking of St. Patrick's Day here is my pick of Irish bands and the songs I like. No Beer songs here (see my connections Beer volume 1 & Beer volume 2 for those). Although St. Patrick's day is really an American holiday Irish decided long ago to celebrate with us (and not complain about appropriation.) Just do everyone a favor and drink some good Irish beer preferably not colored green. One of my favorite Irish bands (although they are technically Irish-American) is Gaelic Storm. One of the best bands to see live. I highly recommend them. Their song on this playlist is just a small example of how great they are. Not that the others are slouches, either. All very cool. I love how Bing Crosby fits in right next to Snow Patrol. Tomorrow, if you're lucky, you'll get more Irish related stuff.

Celtic Pick

01 Enya - Orinoco Flow
02 The Pogues with Cait O'Riordan - Danny Boy

VAN RHEEcordings

This is not the typical pick or connection on this blog. This was a cassette made by a friend (yes, a girl) out of the records I had at my home. I ended up listening to this quite often. Wore the thing out. I had to reproduce it based on a faded out home made cassette label that had water stains on it. But here it is, named after my first DJ company name for me and now for you. The spelling and title is exactly how it was on the cassette, not my choice, although now it is my pick. The cover had to be redone, but it is reminiscent of the original. Hand lettered Times Roman on a dark red background.

WSB (William S Burroughs) Pick

William S Burroughs was part of the Beat Generation. He was wild and crazy and started or promoted a bunch of stuff in his lifetime. A heroin addict, writer and promoter of the avant garde. His voice is distinctive and he was sampled as much as he sampled others. Here are some of the Cut and Paste (which is what became sampling later on) he appeared on or instigated. Think of it as an introduction to William S Burroughs and his work. This started life as a cassette (therefore side 1 and side 2) but has been completely redone as this higher quality playlist. Like yesterday's pick, this is not for everybody. I'm not sure, but I think he would have been a Libertarian in today's world. But I think he thought of himself as an anarchist or liberal. My how times change. I love the cover.

Classifieds Pick

It's hard to describe this pick. Let's do it this way. There are two kinds of people. People who think The Beatles song "Revolution 9" is brilliant and those that think it is the worst Beatles song ever. This pick is not for the latter, because all of the songs on this playlist are descended from Revolution 9. You will hate or love this playlist. There is no inbetween. I am in the love category which is why I made what was originally this cassette. But now redone in better quality. Not spoken word, but incorporating found cut ups like William S Burroughs did (I'll post a comp of his sometime), but also incorporating samples of sound and music in various ways. The Beatles didn't do it first, but they did get it into every household of America first.

Them's Fighting Words 5 (Southern Rock Pick)

This is the last in the series for now. I have a few more coming, but I still have to prepare the files and organize everything. You probably don't know, but I own all the songs I put in these comps and I carefully place them in specific order. They flow well one to the next, because I place them there in that order, thematically sometimes, or by energy or feel or BPM. Well this Them's Fighting Words playlist pick has some cool choices. Let me know which ones you love and which ones you hate, but more importantly which ones you notice I am missing. Perhaps they'll show up on future volumes. In the meantime, I hope you have enjoyed all of the volumes so far.

Them's Fighting Words 4 (Southern Rock Pick)

More of the Southern Rock playlist in this pick I call Them's Fighting Words. We're in the fourth volume and you will notice that I am putting in (for the second time) a guy who is definitely not from the South. I'm talking Neil Young. He calls himself a Canerican, but either way he is not from the south and I'm sure that plenty of you think I shouldn't put him in here at all. The first track is pretty much a dig against the South and the track today is just about a Southern Railroad. Not enough to qualify as Southern. But I like these tunes and they are linked to the South. If only because of Lynyrd Skynyrd's response to his songs. These tracks do fit in musically, so for me they stay. I would love to get your feedback on what other songs I should put into this series, because it obviously can keep going for a long time with hits (and should be hits) in plentiful supply.

Them's Fighting Words 3 (Southern Rock Pick)

You'll notice that I have a few bands that have appeared multiple times throughout this series. I can't help that, there are some bands in this pick that completely represent what southern rock means to me. But there are some bands in this volume of Them's Fighting Words playlist that have not appeared before. Little Feat, for instance should have been up here way before. And one day I will do an Almman Brothers Family comp, because they have a few splinters that show up here (as well as Skynyrd family). Enjoy this volume and look out for tomorrow. BTW, Happy Birthday, Eric!

Them's Fighting Words 2 (Southern Rock Pick)

Continuing on with the Southern Rock pick that I call Them's Fighting Words, here's volume 2 of this multi volume series. In this playlist we get some more of my favorites. The first volume was some of the first probably more mainstream southern rock songs, but I missed a few that wouldn't fit on a CD. This has got a couple less "popular" songs mixed in with Ramblin' Man which is probably the definitive Southern Rock song. I'm pretty sure I know why Nashville Pussy isn't hitting the mainstream, but I love their sound. And, boy, are they great in concert. Kentucky Headhunters, Black Stone Cherry, Grinderswitch all fit in nicely among FreeBird and the "Bands" (Charlie, Allman, Marshall). More coming tomorrow!

Them's Fighting Words 1 Southern Rock Pick

Southern Rock is a genre that is filled with some amazing artists. Coming from a childhood in California, the closest thing we got was the Eagles and that's Southern California rock, not Southern. But discovering real Southern Rock was eye opening. It was so good. And then later moving to the South I realized that the stereotypes were not true (and completely true in another way). Anyway, I love Southern Rock. I used all the stereotypes when I made these compilation playlist picks, but that's for me to remember where I came from, not what they have come to mean. So too bad, I incorporate the Confederate flag in the cover. I use hillbilly phrase for the name (not even typical Southern, shame on me). What ever. I stereotyped you based on my own prejudices from years ago. Get over it. Now if you don't like it, I just say, Bless Your Heart. Just enjoy the music.

Bauhaus Family Covers

If you downloaded yesterday's post , you'll have an idea where this post is coming from. I'm no going to get into Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, Tones on Tail or any of the guys in the band. Just suffice it to say these guys had great taste in music. This pick is all about the covers they did in each incarnation. Bowie, the Beatles, John Cale, Eno, T Rex, Iggy Pop and so much more. One day I should do a matching playlist of all these originals. It took me years to track down the original 45 of Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores (John Cale). someone else should hear it besides me. Anyway, this is two sides of what was originally a cassette, so it's longer and divided by the original sides. Enjoy these covers.

Bauhaus Family Pick

Bauhaus consisted of Peter Murphy (vocals), Daniel Ash (guitar), Kevin Haskins (drums) and David J (bass). They were a dark post-punk band that pretty much started goth rock. Amazing band, but because of friction in the band, they break up. Peter Murphy goes solo, the rest of the band becomes Tones on Tail and then Love & Rockets. Each is quite good. A couple of other solo albums and there you have it another family broken up with some really cool separate projects. Here are some of the tracks I like in this pick to give you an introduction to the family. Notice the Mondrian in the background of the cover. Yes, part of the Bauhaus art movement. BTW, If you like this one, check out tomorrow's post.

13 Peter Murphy - Cuts You Up
14 Daniel Ash - Come Alive
15 Tones on Tail - Lions
16 Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead

Joy Division Family Pick

Joy Division was a band that didn't last long enough. With the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis right at the brink of their stardom it signified and end. But it became a new beginning for the rest of the band. They became New Order which hit with several great albums and singles, but also had several splinters off that as well. This pick includes several of those side projects during and after New Order. They have been on and off again at least a few times although they have worked on projects alone and some with each other as different bands. Here is my pick of that bunch (including a couple Joy Division tracks to round it out.)

Joy Division Family Pick

01 Peter Hook & The Light - Disorder

A couple of tracks that almost made it, but didn't:
Echo & The Bunnymen (with Stephen Morris) - Soul Kitchen (Live)
Revenge - White Light, White Heat

Cats Connection

Well, I had to do a Cat connection since I had the dog one. I no longer have cats (I'm very allergic) but the cat on the cover was my cat. I have no idea why the cat loved the sink, but there you go. Sorry to say, but no longer with us. Like the Dog What's the Connection? there are tons of songs with cat, pussycat, kitten, kitty in the title. These are my favorites that I own, though. Let me know which favorite cat song of yours, that I missed, by telling me in the comments. Maybe I will have to make volume two. Enjoy the meowsic. I do like cats, I just like dogs better. But cat music is pretty darn good. The Johnny Holiday theme music is what I use to bring me up into the arena. Presenting Pol Inate! Whoo hoo!

Dogs Connection 1

Here are my favorite songs about dogs. Couple of things you should know about me and dogs. I am allergic to dogs and cats (and pretty much most pets), but I've had dogs most of my life. I currently have two. Both boxers. Our family has worked with boxer rescue's in the past, fostering dogs. Our two dogs now are rescues. I recommend West Coast Boxer Rescue and DFW Boxer Rescue. Help them out, donate or foster a dog. Boxers are the best dogs ever! Wiggle butts. One of my dogs is on the cover of this playlist.

If you get a boxer (or any dog) please get one from a rescue site. That will help. As for the music, I know there are a million other Dog songs. These are my pick in this What's The Connection? Notice Storm covering the Cramps great song. Ask me about my Storm story. Also kind of a sick song about the dogcatcher from Bay Area punk reggae band Babylon Reps that will make you want to help rescue dogs. Great version of the Beatles' Hey Bulldog! (probably one of my favorite Beatles' songs). Tell me your favorite Dog songs in the comments and shoot off a picture of your dog here or on Facebook especially if it is a boxer.

Newfangled Again volume 7

I'm sorry to say it, but this might be the last of this pick. No more Newfangled Again. Unless I got really inspired while posting and listening to this series. We'll see. Let me know how it went for you. Let me know if you want to see more. Anyway, I like this one, because I finally added Brian Eno to it and that always makes any pick better. That and newish Bowie. A cool band from the Netherlands. It's all fun. I had a blast making and playing this. I hope you do too.
