Feel Like It 2

It's not quite fair for me to call this pick Feel Like It 2, because it really doesn't match at all with feel like it 1. The songs are not based off the same seed song. These are completely separate. It is only because I am lazy and didn't want to make a new cover. I just added volume 2 to the other cover. And I didn't want to make a whole new folder. Like I said: lazy. I was calling it "newcomp" until the last second. That being said, I did use two songs that I considered for volume one (and rejected because I didn't think they quite fit) . They fit nicely here and I did like the songs. See if you can guess which two. Also at the time I was making this I realized that KC (Harry Casey) had written George McCrae's biggest hit and even recorded it and gave it to him. So I wanted to make a compilation with George, his wife Gwen (and her response song), a KC song and another song written by Casey for Jimmy Bo Horne. Not for any reason except I felt like it. There's also no reason to continue the numbering, but I did.

Feel Like It

 It's been awhile since I made a completely brand new mixtape. Except nowadays I call it a Pick. or a compilation playlist, since no one listens to CD's or tapes anymore. I called it Feel Like It, because I just felt like making one. I had come across Jason Mraz' song and I liked it. But even more, I knew I could easily mix from it intosongs from Dnce and Cake and even Justin Timberlake. I didn't need to go very far to grab some songs in the same key and close BPM's to come up with this one. Some new, some older but all in key matching order. Building up and winding down like a good set would do. I played it at a gig and was happy to see that it went over well. Even the theme is intertwined. Here you go!

I'm not sure how many more of these Feel Connections I'm going to post in a row, but it kind of feels like I want to take a break. Yea I crack myself up with stupid stuff like that all day. This one is Make You Feel in the title. There are probably enough Sylvester covers to do one just on his song, but I tried to spread it around.. There are three of these that got this one going. Red Hot Chili Peppers. I've been a fan since the early days. Somewhere on this site are some stories of early concerts. Michael Jackson and War. For some reason I must be the only person who has all of War's albums. They are good, even if they didn't all have hits on them. Or maybe because they didn't. There's no Tower of Power on this compilation, but they are another one, like War who have really good albums even if there are no hits on the albums. And I don't need to explain Michael. We grew up together. Him rich and me, not at all.

This is the second Connection for Work It. Really it's for anything plus an It. So Do It, Work It, Shake It, Drop It all that similar to the first one I did. But This one was used for work outs. I don't know how that makes it any different in reality, but I always classified this as a Work It Work Out Class. I made a few work out class compilations and this one was different than most of them, because I usually had a quieter stretch section to warm up and then another at the end. This one doesn't have that so I was probably still working it out. Either way this is what I have. Compare it to the other Work It and see if there are any differences. The covers are very similar.

Continuing the Feel What's The Connection is Do You Feel. Yesterday was Feel You. These all have Do You Feel in the title. Had to do it, because of Peter Frampton. I included the single (shorter) version of the song, so I could fit in a few extra tracks, but by all means go listen to the longer version. It's probably better. Another wide variety when you do it by title. I included country, pop, disco, rock etc. A couple of the tracks have all the words but not exactly right after each other. Still in the same order, but other words inserted. Example is Jimmie Rodgers Snow or the Deniece Williams. But they were good songs and I wanted them included. I still have a few leftovers, so perhaps there will be a volume two, but I need to get some more to fill it out (maybe I will with the longer Peter Frampton.) See the similar cover.

But that will have to be later. I included their version plus a special version. What's The Connection? I Feel...

A fun Connection and a fun cover. That's me and my daughter when she was a baby. Trying to feel like she was feeling at that moment. During her childhood, I was sometimes very successful at that and sometimes completely off. But I always felt I loved her either way. A few doubles on songs on this WTC, but they are good covers. James Brown covered twice, but totally different. Not sure you've ever heard Dr. Loco's version, because he's a Bay Area guy that didn't get national coverage, but his band has some great songs. Well worth looking for his three albums. Prince is covered a couple of times, too, Although some people believe he covered Chaka Khan, that's wrong. Kylie Minogue is not covering Prince. That's her song. Bronski Beat with Marc Almond has a great version of Donna Summer's big hit. I didn't have room, but the 12 inch version is probably better than the single version although it's pretty darn good. Not sure if I fixed it before I posted it, but Chingon has two "N's" in it, so fix it in the tags and the m3u if I didn't.

Independence Day

On this Independence Day (4th of July in the USA) this pick is dedicated to the freedom of all Americans. It may not feel like it sometimes and we always have to fight for that freedom from tyranny, but it is real. These songs reflect that sometimes it doesn't feel like freedom, but it is always in the spirit of all Americans. We are currently fighting against tyranny, where authoritarians are trying to get rid of political opponents in illegal ways, but like Dan Bongino says, freedom and independence is like a beach ball. You can try to hold it underwater, but it always wants to pop back up and it will! Enjoy your 4th of July! And if you are American (or not), fight for your right to be Independent! It is a God given right, not to be trifled with by any state or country.

Bayou Boogie 1

I have done a couple of Zydeco picks before. I like the music. Energetic, danceable and fun. Like New Orleans it's loose and has a good feel. That's still the point with this part of this new series Bayou Boogie. It's all the fault of me trying to come up with new nights in local bars and clubs. Stuff no one in this area is really doing. And that started because I did that whole vs series (Shag vs Northern vs Texas vs Belgium vs Lowrider). I liked the series and started the Brisket Beats thing (which I will start posting sometime) and it led me to the Zydeco which I had been doing for awhile anyway. Just getting you in to my mind set of the last few weeks of posts. Been totally busy working and doing this in the few moments in between. Anyway lots of ideas and lots of stuff coming out even considering. So tell me how this pick fits with the rest of what I've been posting and would you go to a bar that was playing this? And what would you be drinking in between dancing with your favorite partner? Would you like it if they had some dance lessons at the start of the night? BTW, I like the cover. I was trying to make it feel like the beginning of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland, fireflies and all. Notice the disco ball crawdaddy on the sign.

Femmes Fatale 4

I feel like I need to remind you that these Femmes Fatale picks are divided by odd and even volumes. Even is more upbeat. I'm going to mention two of the female singers on this comp. Not because they don't all deserve mention, but because I feel like it. The first is Jo Kennedy. You may not know who she is. But Down Under she is a singer actress. I saw her in a fun movie Starstruck. She plays a singer. Great soundtrack, a silly plot. One of my favorite Australian movies. I won't mention that the soundtrack includes several male bands that you may know. It has Jo Kennedy, that's all you need to know. The other artist is Storm Large. I never had heard of her. But I went to a concert (Nina Hagen) and accidentally came early to the show. Storm opened. Almost no one there. I was blown away. I instantly became a fan. Bought her CD's. Loved all of them. Supposedly she was on some TV show competing and made this single with Dave Navarro. I have no idea if she won or not, but if she didn't, shame on the judges. One of the best singers live I have ever seen/felt. And I've seen a lot. I want to be her groupie.She was amazing.

New Old Soul 1

I haven't a clue about sub genres. Sometimes it just seems made up. And this Pick is exactly that a made up sub genre: New Old Soul. Basically, for me, it means newer artists making soul music that sounds like old time soul from back in the day. I feel like an old man just saying that. Get off the lawn you whipper snappers! But some call some of these just soul or R&B or Neo Soul, or Retro-Soul. I have no idea what distinguishes one from the other, so I just put the ones I liked. It's number one, because it's the first one in what could be an infinite number of these eventually. Just depends on who keeps making songs like these and do I like them. Heatwave Extra Warm Pick

If you have looked at any other part of this blog site, you know that I have a special place in my heart for disco. And Heatwave. I've posted a family pick of Rod Temperton, who wrote many of the Heatwave hits as well as all of the hits on his pick. I have also picked a comp of Heatwave Ballads which is pretty darn good. This pick is not the hits, well, some are. These are the B-Sides of singles, the extra tracks of Heatwave. A few are 12" versions or remixes of hits, but much of these are fairly rare tracks that didn't make it onto an album in any version. One of my favorites is Birthday. I like to play it when there is a birthday, of course, but it's just got some great vocal work on it that allows you to listen all year through. And, no, it is not the typical Happy Birthday song. But it's good, even though it is actually one of the few non-Rod Temperton tracks. One day I will post my Best Of Pick for this band, but for now, it'll have to b-sides.

Wah?

Like in Wha'Happen? I don't know. I had been working on a mixtape at the end of last year which turned into Feel Like It and that led to WTF? and I had a bunch of songs I didn't use for either. And I was collecting a few more that I wanted in a mixtape. This popped out. There is no rhyme or reason to this. The mashup at the beginning was something I had been working on for a little bit. Always wanted to use 10cc and Hall & Oates for something. This came out. Wha? And how does it work with Tower Of Power? And Pitbull? It doesn't. I put in another mashup (not mine this time). I also added a couple of extended remixes of songs that I wanted to pick for this. The CJ & Co. was because of K's Disco Fever post on Butterboy's site. I just felt it was terrible to not have that album mix represented, especially since it was the very first track played at Studio 54. So, blame that one on K. Ask me some time about living in the Bay Area and having ToP playing anywhere they can. What a great band! This track was not the big hit, but it was for us.

Awesome Downtime 1

This compilation series is from a guest, George Glass, who has the blog Groovy Library which I subscribe to. He posted a series on his site that I absolutely love, called Awesome Downtime. I'm sure he will have a ton more, but I asked him if we could post the first several on this site, too. So here is the first in the series. Normally I post either how I came up with the idea or the title, but I don't know any of that. I just know that I have been listening to it regularly since I first came across them (at yet another site- Butterboy). I will post the next several over the next few days. I did not change the cover, but did run the files through Platinum Notes and basically did what I say in my Prepare MP3 article. Rezipped it and posted it.

Note: Every selection is good to great in my books. All tracks (including the previous downtime comp) and any future downtime comps, I listen on various occasions be it in the bath, relaxing, or simply when I feel like it. I find relaxing music in all kinds of genres, and not just something you'd hear in a spa. I have nothing against the latter (I listen to it myself) but I want the comps to be more eclectic. I've found over the years several D&B (drum & bass) tracks that are also soothing. I specify them as smooth d&b. Yes, faster beats can be tranquil. Well, it works for me.

Funky Disco (Leopard) 3

I've done a few of these Funky Disco (Leopard) picks already and I hope you realize how much I like them. I grew up in the disco era and I always was a funk fan, so getting the two together is just bonus time for me. Several funk bands made disco tunes to get more airplay on both radio and clubs. I'm always surprised that people hate or love this genre. Fusing funk with disco or vice versa,  just makes so much sense to me. Later they fused disco with punk and new wave and industrial. I like them all. Notice a few things about this pick. Some are disco bands and some are funk bands. And all have done both. Remember that the Praxis track has nothing to do with the Bill Laswell associated band Praxis. That came later than this one and was much harder than this seventies band. Please leave a comment with a funk/disco track that I haven't used yet that you really like.

Divine Pick

This has become much more controversial. No idea why. Well, maybe it's because people are way too serious about things and not at all serious about their own responsibility. I am staying out of the political part of it. What am I saying? Of course I am not going to do that. I love this. I know what a woman is. No one needs to explain that. And I have no issues with whatever anyone wants to do. How you dress or how you "feel" is none of anyone's business. Just don't smush my face in it. Don't force it. You don't get special privileges for how you feel.  Transvestites, Oh My! That being said. Men dressing up as women has been around since before Shakespeare. No biggie. I loved John Water's movies (Divine), Rocky Horror Picture Show, David Bowie, Sandy Duncan (Peter Pan), the Original Bird Cage, Milton Berle, Flip Wilson etc etc. And there is a great deal of music associated with all of that - some in this pick. Do not like trans story hour at the library or a curriculum of grooming kids, but I did take my daughter years ago to see a live version of Rocky Horror Show. Gave her a squirt gun and some toast and newspapers, etc. Like I said, don't smush it in my face and I'm okay with men dressing as women and women dressing like men. And it is Halloween coming up. Men, dress like the Queen for all I care (or Princess Di). But you are not a woman.

I have been listening to quite a bit of the band War and was thinking of other songs that fit with them and came up with this "Mixtape" pick. You could put this into a Cinco De Mayo party or mix it with any of my Exitos compilations. But I decided it should just be in the mixtape category. I sort of viewed it like Wah? or WTF?! or Hit The Spot or even Feel Like It. It has two War related tracks that fit in, but also some lesser known bands mixed in with the Santana, Mandrill, Tower Of Power and Malo. One of the ones that I really think fits in is Southern California's Mestizo Beat. But try finding their recordings. Impossible. But they are cool and some label should put their stuff out. I lived in Canoga for awhile so that hits me close. By the way, for those of you who don't know the title (Ése) is sort of slang for "Dude" so that struck me as a great title for this.
