Solo Beatles 2

Continuing the pick from yesterday, these are more of my favorite solo  beatles tracks. Not the Weirdest, not the Rockin-est, although there is some overlap with those picks. Just my favorites today. Things I couldn't fit on yesterday's solo beatles pick. I only used five songs from each Beatle. For George I did use one Traveling Wilbury track. It was originally destined as him solo, but ended up as a new project for him. So the first Traveling Wilbury track that got the whole project going. He wrote it and is featured on it, si I included it as one of his tracks. Also to keep up with yesterday's pick there is also one "new" Beatles track. I think I may like this one even better than yesterday's. Both volumes work together, so the numbering continues and the cover is the same. The order like yesterday is by BPM.

Solo Beatles 1

I guess, just like all my compilations, I say one thing and then change the rules. I think I'm staying within the rules I made for myself, but then I just throw them out when it's convenient. I have previous picks of songs that sound like the Beatles (Beatlesque) and from their sons (Beatlesons). This pick is my favorite songs from the Beatles after they broke up. It's not done like some people do (and I love) when they put together songs to make possible albums "if they only had stayed together". I had one major rule. Give George and Ringo the same amount of space. In this case it was five tracks each. I then added the Beatles track made "post-humorously". I know some people didn't like it, but I kinda did. There was no limit on which year it was made. They ended up being fairly popular songs, but that wasn't a concern. Just ones I liked. I did have a ton left over, so another volume will come.

A Good BJ Tape (Bob & Jenny Top 80's)

I made a lot of mixtapes throughout my life. And then I started making mixtapes on CD. Luckily I had friends that enjoyed getting them. But especially lucky was that I had several people that loved to make them, too. Bob and Jenny (and it was always the two of them) made some great ones. We made several for each other. This was a cassette tape and then I redid it on CD. They moved to one of the San Pedro islands near Seattle and I lost touch. Then I moved to another state and now it's unlikely we will ever get in touch with each other again, which is a shame as I liked them a lot. And this pick is one reason why it was so easy to say they had such good taste. They also redid furniture and it seemed like they could do anything. They used to have a company called Fruit & Nut (which is why the cover has both). Anyway what a great pick of music. I still enjoy it today.

Guitar Instrumentals

This started as something and ended as something different, sort of. My idea at first was to have instrumental guitar songs that I could use as intro music. Something I could just go to if I needed a song quickly to bring someone up to a stage as their intro music. I had already made a series of Beautiful Guitar Solos. The idea on this one was to have a driving song with good energy. You won't believe it but the original thought I had was also to steer a bit clear of surf music. It didn't quite work out that way. Listening back to the pick, it barely can be used as intro music, it definitely has surf music, even the energy part isn't quite all there. But I had already made it and I kinda liked what had come out. So here you go. Random guitar instrumentals that don't quite fit together, but you might like anyway.

Guitar Instrumentals

01 Link Wray - Rumble
02 Dick Dale - Miserlou
03 Eric Johnson - Cliffs Of Dover

What's The Connection? Sweat

I took a couple of tries to get this connection the way I wanted. A couple of days ago I had made the Nona Hendryx pick and one of the songs reminded me of the Brick song on this WTC and that reminded me of Defunkt and C&C Music Factory as well as James Brown and the Sugarcubes which lead me down a rabbit hole. I stayed away from songs spelled like Sweat but really pronounced Sweet. Some was eliminated just by that. Surprising how many did that. The hardest one for me was Chubby Carrier who I had from a good Zydeco compilation, But for some reason the files for that album got corrupted and it took me three more tries to get the rips right. Half the album kept  making jittery noises. Arrgh! Oh well it worked out. I hope you enjoy this one!  I love that the cover is a screen grab from a great movie that I'm sure you recognize!

The The Pick (updated)

I wasn't quite satisfied with the first iteration of this pick, so I redid it. I made some new song choices (added a single and something from the new album, removed some songs) Changed a couple of things and, well, here's the original write-up:

The first time I heard Matt Johnson and The The was on a compilation called Some Bizarre. I actually bought it because it had a Depeche Mode song and a Soft Cell song on it that I hadn't heard before. And I liked both of those bands. The one track by The The was kinda of weird (as was the rest of the album) but I liked it. Later when I saw the first The The album come out, I saw this cool artwork and remembered the song. It wasn't on the album. I bought it right away. I had no idea what I was in for. I listened to the album late at night with headphones on. Seinheisers, with yellow foam and open ears. And on a really long cord. I listened to the album and then I played it again. And again. Over and over. Several times. I was entranced by the songs, the voice. I thought everyone would or should be listening to this album. They didn't. I didn't hear a single song on the radio stations. I tried to make it my mission to play a song every time I was out. I don't think he caught on until a few albums later. I bought them all. This is my pick of The The songs. But get all the albums. They are great. I didn't realize until later that all these people I loved guested on these albums. Bonus!

16 The The - Uncertain Smile
17 The The - I Want 2 B U
18 The The - Dogs Of Lust

Patti LaBelle Pick

Coming after yesterday's pick, this one isn't so surprising. Patti LaBelle sang with Nona Hendryx (or vice-versa) in several bands. There are a couple of tracks that repeat on this pick. But most are different. The Blue-Belles had one hit, so it repeats and Labelle (the band) had one huge hit and I couldn't skip it, so it's on here as well. The rest is all distinct. Labelle's collacoration with Laura Nyro is here. Patti with Michael McDonald is here (Yacht music at it's best). Patti and Grover Washington, Jr is here as well as my two favorites from the movies Leap Of Faith (great movie) and Beverly Hills Cop (another great movie) and both with excellent soundtracks. The nine minute Cat Stevens cover isn't from a movie, but I do love me some Cat Stevens, especially done like this! And never mind the Mindbenders cover (really Carole Bayer Sager).

16 Patti LaBelle - Love, Need And Want You
17 Patti LaBelle with Grover Washington Jr - The Best Is Yet To Come

Nona Hendryx Pick

I think we've all heard Nona Hendryx whether or not we know it or not. She was part of The Blue-Belles, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, glam band Labelle (yes, Lady Marmalade) and a ton of guest vocal spots in addition to her own solo stuff. I became aware of the person when I heard her sing with Material (Bill Laswell) And loved the track so I put it on this pick. I didn't add it here but she did backing vocals with the Talking Heads, Jerry Harrison, Cameo and has songs with Peter Gabriel, Keith Richards. Just tons more. Including being on the Artists United Against Apartheid album and on the Sun City single. Here I concentrate on her solo stuff with a few tracks from Labelle over the years, one from the Blue-Belles and one each from Soul Clap and Material. There are a couple of tracks from soundtracks (Coming To America and To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar) both great. A lot of these tracks are written by her, but I included a few covers, too.

01 Nona Hendryx - Design For Living
02 Nona Hendryx - Transformation
03 Nona Hendryx - Baby Go-Go

17 Nona Hendryx - I Sweat (Going Through The Motions)

Hot Toddy Remixes

Continuing from yesterday's pick, this is the selection of remixes done by Hot Toddy (Chris Todd from Crazy P). He's done a few pretty nice remixes and these are a few of them that I have. One interesting track is from Crazy P bandmate Ron Basejam (Jim Baron). Decent song and good remix, just interesting because it's his bandmate and buddy. Either way it's a good addition to his solo stuff. Which one do you like best? And am I missing a good one?

Hot Toddy

This pick is about the artist known as Hot Toddy. Yesterday I had a pick of Crazy Penis, which is appropos since Chris Todd from that band is Hot Toddy. His solo music is similar to Crazy P, but also quite different. I picked some tracks from various albums and singles, as well as a couple of remixes he did of Crazy P tracks. He's become known for his remixes and tomorrow I will pick some of his remixes. BTW, today do not get confused, that one track has nothing to do with Eric Burdon, but it's still cool anyway. I'm not much of a whiskey drinker (a nice tequila is more my kind of speed) but I understand the hot toddy drink is quite refreshing. You will have to tell me. I do not know from personal experience. But the band is quite refreshing. Either way I designed the cover with cinnamon spice and lemon becuase that's what I hear is in the drink.

Hot Toddy

01 Hot Toddy - I Need Love
02 Hot Toddy - Sometime Last Night
03 Crazy P - Never Gonna Reach Me (Hot Toddy Mix)

10 Hot Toddy - Don't Spill The Wine
11 Crazy P - Love Is With You (Hot Toddy Remix)
12 Hot Toddy - Slave To You

Crazy (P)ick

Crazy P (or Crazy Penis as they were called originally) is an interesting band. They started in the 90's (Chris Todd and Jim Baron) and put out albums and singles until 2019 and toured after that. They had added a couple more members by their third album (including singer Danielle Moore who died tragically in August 2024). This is a sampling of songs from their albums and singles that I like. It covers them under both names. I just liked their sound throughout their career. I couldn't name it, but they have something. Todd is also known as Hot Toddy and Jim Barron is aka Ron Basejam. See tomorrow.

Crazy (P)ick

01 Crazy Penis - Never Gonna Reach Me
02 Crazy Penis - Lady T
03 Crazy P - The Witness
04 Crazy Penis - 3 Play It Cool
05 Crazy P - We Will F--k You Up
06 Crazy Penis - Stop Space Return
07 Crazy P - Like A Fool
08 Crazy P - One True Light
09 Crazy Penis - Heartbreaker (DJ Edit)
10 Crazy Penis - Can't Get Down
11 Crazy Penis - You Started Something
12 Crazy Penis - Bumcop
13 Crazy Penis - There's a Better Place!
14 Crazy Penis - Give It Up (Laid Instrumental Mix)

What's The Connection? Beatles Covers 3

This is the third volume of the Beatles covers pick. This connection, like the last couple of days is just songs written by the Beatles that I like. Most are from singles or album tracks. A couple in this series were on a compilation of Beatles tunes, but most were not. If you search for the ones that were on other covers albums, I'm sure you might find other covers you like. But again, these are the ones that I picked. One of them took me a while to track down. Skinyard's track was only on the B-Side of a single. I'm not sure it ever made it onto a CD. If it did, I didn't find it. I had played the track on my old radio show, remembered how much I liked it and started looking for it. I have the original version on my Beatles Rockin' Pick. I obviously like the track. I'm working on volume four, but it's not ready. If you have any suggestions (based on what you heard here) leave a comment and let me know.

What's The Connection? Beatles Covers 2

Volume two of the WTC Pick of Beatles covers. I tried to not pick the same song or the same artist on each volume. That being said I did get the same artist who did more than one Beatles cover on subsequent volumes Echo & the Bunnymen and Siouxsie & the Banshees are great examples. I like them both. they both appear on volume one as well as this volume and both tracks are amazing on each volume. Again these tracks are just tracks I like. Some because they sound like the Beatles (but not) and some because they sound nothing like the original version. Space Negros sound very different for instance. You could do quite a few of these volumes. What would you put on my volume 4?

What's The Connection? Beatles Covers 1

I have a few volumes of this connection and I also have some Beatlesque picks as well. And assorted Beatles family picks and more. Just search and you will find a few. These may or may not sound like the Beatles, but they were all songs written by Beatles. I make no claims about how good or bad they are, just that I like them. Some because they are so different and some because they aren't. I'm pretty sure that at least a couple in this series may not have been actual Beatles songs recorded officially by the group and just given to an artist. But either way you will get a flavor. I hope you enjoy this. For some reason anything Beatles related always get a decent number of people clicking on the links.

What's The Connection? Back To School

You have to go back a couple of years to find the last School connection I did. I don't have kids in school anymore, but it seems like it's back to school time again. So I made this WTC pick with the idea that these are songs about missing school, not wanting to go back to school, remembering school and anything I thought might pertain to Back to School, except for shopping, because no one wants to be reminded how much more everything costs over the last few years. Sorry, I just did.  Don't pay attention to my ramblings.  Several great songs on here. I was most impressed with the teenage sisters from Hello Sister. I think they might go somewhere. Go check them out. I heard they might have been on one of those talent TV shows, but what do I know? The rest you probably know.

Fakin' Jamaican 5

I really like this pick. The whole series is good. Bands that play a reggaefied version of whatever they normally play. I started with white washed Jamaican music (ska, reggae) but any reggae rock would do as long as they weren't primarily reggae artists, but even that I've fudged over the years. This fifth one of the series is not the last, so enjoy what you get. Pretend about some of these. I know. I just liked the songs and put them in.

Fakin' Jamaican 5

New Prog Pick 7

For a pick that was going to end with volume 4, it sure has gone on for awhile. New Prog 6 was four days ago. Two tracks from bands I've posted up here before. One artist (Fish) that was the singer of Marillion, so sort of posted him up before. And two tracks of bands that I haven't posted before. Galahad has some great tracks. Their first album was in 1991, but they had some amazing ones including one with John Wetton has a guest vocalist. This track was the title track of their 2007 album and it got a lot of attention. Really though, it's hard to find an album of theirs that isn't quite good if not excellent. Wobbler is from Norway and sound like Yes and King Crimson and ELP combined at times. This 20 minute plus track from 2017 is amazing. The rest of their four other albums are worth checking out!

New Prog Pick 7

40 Galahad - Empires Never Last
41 Transatlantic - Duel With The Devil
42 Fish - A Gentleman's Excuse Me
43 Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize
44 Wobbler - From Silence To Somewhere

Anyway, I have a few more songs to make the next volume of silly, but I think today will be the end of Silly Connections for a little while. Notice how Silly the cover even is. Even more silly than yesterday. BTW, for a Crazy connecton.

What's The Connection? Silly 1

I wanted this connection to be a little Silly, but it turned out to be a lot of Silly. More Silly than I realized. In fact I had to go to at least two volumes of Silly. Yesterday was a bit more serious. For me it started with Wings. The rest sort of fell into place after that. I completely forgot about a few of these until I started looking: Descendents and Toy Dolls spring to mind now. Monty Python, of course, came up right away. Yes. The cover is me. I always try to get people to make silly faces. When I was younger, I used to practice the looks in the mirror and my mom would tell me that my face would freeze in that position, but it never happened. And I tried. A Lot! It's a wonder I ever got married...

Remember 9/11

On this anniversary of 9/11, I have a pick of songs that are inspired by, written about 9/11. Some are just feeling patriotic songs. Either way they remind me of the horrible attacks on America. And to remind all of us, including me, that we have an open border and that an administration let in millions of unvetted aliens from around the world. We need to make sure nothing like this day ever happens again in our country. A similar thing happened in Israel and we need tomake sure it doesn't happen there either. In fact,  around the world we need to make sure that terrorists never get the chance to do it again. Vote people in who will stop it. Remember this day: September 11.

New Prog Pick 6

Well for those of you that love prog (I almost wrote Prego - I must be thinking of spaghetti), you will be happy with this pick, even if you don't know the bands. Just five tracks, but they are all very good. I'm not sure that I would put Ride into the progressive category, but this track certainly is. And yet I might pur them there. The other bands, there is no doubt that they are new prog. BTW, is the cover a horse? a hand? Just some ball of energy? What is it?

New Prog Pick 6

35 Pendragon - Indigo
36 Deyss - Vision In The Dark
37 Ride - Grasshopper
38 Quasar - Mission 14
39 Haken - Visions

Longest Rock

This pick is different than all my other picks. I am going against my "rules". Normally I have total number of songs that equal up to about a CD length. I make most of my  comps about that size. I have a few that are a cassette size in length (so about 90 minutes.) This pick is completely different. This one is only 17 tracks, but is four hours and forty-eight minutes long in one zipped file. They go from just over nine minutes long to over forty-three minutes long. These are my favorite long songs. Lynyrd Skynyrd starts us off and we end with Jethro Tull. Lots of rock, much of it prog. I know there are other songs that would fit on this, but this is my pick. I tried not to have live tracks. Otherwise a bunch of Grateful Dead or Allman Brothers might have made it on. No disco, no funk. No Funkadelic. Sorry. That might have to be another volume. I can just picture Isaac Hayes and Eddie Hazel-Funkadelic tracks. But I didn't do it yet.

J Metal

This pick started because my daughter turned me on to Babymetal. Loved the band. I had brought her to see the band Shonen Knife as she grew up. Got to meet the band. So we were already inclined to like Japanese bands made up of women. First I found a bunch of J Rock bands, but the metal side was still left. So I started looking for bands I liked that were metal and had (most if not all) female band members. These are the bands I came up with. If you have some other ones that I should have looked at, leave them in the comments.

Steven Wilson and Procupine Tree on this one. Plus a bunch of other bands that I know you will love. But I am in a hurry today. I'll wait a bit for volume 6 of this pick, but it's coming.

Reggae Dub Pick 4

All of these are reupped. This one is just upped, since I haven't posted it before. You can find links to Dub 1 and Dub 2 on the Dub 3 pick page. All new tracks (although I used the Mad Professor track here on my Mad Professor Dub Me Crazy pick as well). I used two tracks with Lee Perry. One with the Congos and one with the Upsetters. Aswad and Black Uhuru are not generally known as dub artists, but both of them had dub albums that are considered to be amazingly great in dub circles. The tracks on here are a couple of my favorites. King Tubby and Prince Jammy are on here a couple of times. Mad Professor shows up twice, too. Once with the Easy All Stars covering a Pink Floyd track (they have two albums covering Dark Side of the Moon) all good. A couple of tracks with Adrian Sherwood and a smattering of others to round this volume up.

Rhythm Pop Pick 9

Way back when I made the other eight Rhythm Pop Picks. I had enough to make a couple more, but I kinda stopped. I thought it might be enough. I went back to my working folder and decided I was wrong. I still had more to post. So here is the next volume of the pick. Many of these have cool remixes of the songs that you might not have heard, but if you know these bands, you might have. I have to talk about one band. Until December. They didn't get that much attention. They deserved more. But they turned into Consolidated where they got a littl bit of traction (and changed their whole sound), but still not enough. This was their Rhythm Pop phaze. Very Danceable, Very pop.

Green Onions 5

The last of the funky green onion pick so far. I have more but not compiled. I especially have more versions of the song Green Onions. I just need a few more to put around them. I put four versons of the song on this one already. Velvet Underground, the 5,6,7,8's (some vocals), Bill Black's Combo and Al Kooper who does an amazing version. Quite longer and jamming. The other tracks fit well and you won't be disappointed. But I did need more help to get more of these kind of tracks and I am on to the next for now.

Green Onions 3

Third volume of this pick of soul and funk (mostly) intrumentals. I don't know that my pick is all that different than everyone else's picks of this category. And it sure seems like everyone has one. I tried not to look too closely at them when I made mine. (Not at all, actually). Another Booker T & the MG's on this one and yet another version of Green Onions. This time Pink Floyd. Yes. I don't believe it either. Is it soul or funk? Maybe, but it is instrumental. Some of the other tracks are probably much closer to the feel of this series, but it is what it is.

Green Onions 2

I can't remember the first time I heard Green Onions, but I remember very well hearing it in the movie American Graffiti with Wolfman Jack talking over it. It was just so cool. And then I remember the Blues Brothers playing it. And yes, of course, I loved the Blues Brothers. The fact that several of the MG's were in the movie just made it even better. Okay, Dan Akroyd talks through it, but that's okay. Another track by Booker T on this pick, of course they fit. And not the last appearance on this series. Herbie Mann, Jimmie McGriff, the Nite-Liters, Alphonse Mouzon, the Rimshots, O'Donel Levy and Jack McDuff all will appear again.
