AKA Pseudonym

This was really fun to figure out. I knew plenty right off. And skipped a lot. These are all artists who recorded under a Nom De Plume or and AKA or a Pseudonym for this pick. Other than the Traveling Wilburys which has five artists all using a Wilbury fake name (and has George Harrison) I didn't use a single Beatles recording where they used a fake name. And there are a lot of those. And some good ones. I put two Prince ones in, but everyone else only one. XTC has another one that I didn't use, but it's Christmas oriented and didn't want that to be a factor. Some sound obviously like themselves and some not at all. That's the fun part of this. You never know. A couple have been released later with the original names no longer hidden (think Garth Brooks, The Alarm as examples). But a few have kept the joke going. Either way I would love it if you knew of some that I didn't and left me clues in the comments.

  1. This is a really interesting one, and I'm learning a lot from it.

As for clues, I'm pretty sure you'd already know about these three, but here goes anyway: (a) Vince Earl and the Valiants, (b) The Electric Banana, and (c) Warren Phillips and the Rockets.

Now, a similarly interesting idea would be to focus on the names that well-known artists hand recorded under BEFORE changing their names and becoming successful. In some cases, the "original" name would be at least somewhat reminiscent of the later name (e.g., Lewis Reed or Sylvester Stewart). But there would of course be tons of instances (such as Ritchie Marsh or Toby Tyler) that'd be a whole lot harder to figure out. There would also be people like Paul Simon, who had enough "earlier" names to make a list as long as someone's arm!

Finally, I'd like to mention Python Lee Jackson, which is a bit of a special case. People often refer to this example as involving a famous artist recording under a pseudonym, but that's not quite accurate. In actuality, Python Lee Jackson was the name of the group, and the famous artist was simply hired to sing on a certain number of tracks -- becoming a sort of temporary member of the band.

    1. Oh, perfect! A whole set of great clues for me to follow! The pre-fame names would be interesting and endless. I will look for Jackson. Don't know the story...

  2. I should have proof-read more carefully! First of all, I typed "hand" instead of "had." Even worse, I typed "Vince Earl" instead of "Earl Vince." (Oh well -- at least the two key words would be correct individually.)
