Pol's Country Pick 2

This continues my series of country picks that started when I wasn't admitting to myself that I liked country music. I slowly added real country songs into the pick of alternative country stuff I did admit to. I added to that list others that I found later. What's interesting, as a DJ, I find that people who say they don't like country, usually do. But are very vocal about "hating" country. And the people who love country music are the most tolerant people about the music being played. Back when I did not have a decent pick of country music I noticed at weddings and events that there are groups of people who like different music. Some will complain about every other genre being played coming up and saying can't you play something we can dance to. Even when the dance floor is full of dancers. They will not dance unless it is their specific genre. People who like country will dance, even if it isn't country. They are happy every time you play a country song. Even if you play just a few, they are the first to come up and say "thanks for that one song!" and "great music!" People who love some other genres (I won't name the genre) can have 90% of the night be in that genre and they are still upset that the one song was not. That's why I started loving country music.

Pol's Country Pick 3

This is the last of this series for now, I actually have more to pick from but they are not assembled. See the previous two days for how and why I started this series. For this one I want to mention the previously posted Country Stones compilation. I made that compilation after these three in the series. One of the "bonus" tracks in the Stones pick I already had on Volume 2 of this pick. Not an accident. And if you look at the covers of each they all match, just with an extra set of lips on the Stones volume. They are meant to go together. What I haven't posted yet is my first one. My first country-ish pick. Made way before these and I did not make it to match. One day I will post that one. In the meantime, this one will have to do. Leave comments about what your first country song was that made you realize you liked the genre. Or were you brought up a little bit country?

Pol's Country Pick 4

I'm not sure if this should be just a Country Pick or more related to That's Nice, That's Real Nice. I haven't quite decided while I am typing this. By the time you read it, however I guess you'll know what I decided. Probably the former since it is not all alt-country which is what the latter was. Most of these country songs are a little bit randy. Been thinking of a pick I could use and a friend of mine started sending me a selection of newer bands with some good songs that I hadn't heard before. And of course made me start thinking of other songs that would fit in (old and not so old), So I put them all together for this compilation. Anyway, if you are ever in the Austin area, see if Cornell Hurd Band is playing. They are a fun band to see live. We miss Danny, but the band is still going strong. Cornell was from the San Jose area way back when, but transplanted in Texas years ago. Well worth a drive from Dallas if you fly in there. Just make sure he's playing.

Pol's Country Pick 1

I grew up in California. The most country I got growing up was the Eagles or maybe Marie Osmond. I didn't get into country until I was in college. And even then it was mostly what people now are calling alt-country. But as a DJ you had to play some country no matter where you are in this nation. I almost said country again. So this series is some of the first country I ever started liking mixed in with some alt stuff that came later. I found the Dorothy Shay because of Marti Brom and the Cornell Hurd Band. I saw them do a show in Austin on one of my many trips out there, but not one of the South by Southwest trips. I was told by a good friend to make the trip to see them and he was right. Totally worth it. She sang some Dorothy Shay songs which I looked up later and fell in love. I put in the original on this pick, but do check out Brom's version it's quite good too. If you look at the list many of these are bands that weren't really country bands, sort of. Elvis, Wall Of Voodoo, etc. And then off shoots from other bands: Ministry, X, Violent Femmes, etc. and then some comedy and a variety.

Country Beatles

This isn't fair, but the Beatles together and solo did have country influences in their music. Some is in this pick. Personally, I think the Stones did country better (see Country Stones), but the Beatles did have some good songs that really sound country. Some just have that hint of country flavor. That doesn't make the songs bad. No, in fact, some of them are excellent Beatles songs with a Beatles sound. Ringo was a big country fan. He had a whole country album as a solo artist and several of the Beatles tracks with a real country flair are featuring Ringo. But all of them had some country influences. I know I could have picked a bunch of others. Let me know if I missed a really obvious one (especially solo stuff), but here's my pick of countrified Beatles. BTW, I love this cover! My first attempt at AI.

Hayride Hootenanny 1

I never did "full" country gigs, but some where half the family would appreciate some good country and western. This was my more mainstream picks. The Pol's Country Pick was a little more on the outside. I have a few of these and another couple for weddings specifically. I was covered.

Yo Bro 2

Here's the second part of this Bro Country pick. I almost called it Truck Yeah, but this title won out in my mind. A couple of the same bands, but mostly no doubles. And definitely no doubles on songs. Like yesterday I added a Br country song from the perspective of a girl as the last song. The video (if you haven't seen it) is hilarious. I don't follow the country charts much, but I am assuming these are all big hits. At least they are popular when I play them for people at my gigs. A couple of songs on these two volumes also appear on my Hayride Hootenanny series, but those aren't strictly bro country. Although they also are some fun country songs.

Scottish Pick

I already had a Celtic Pick or two last year around St. Patrick's day, so that was covered, but part of the Island was not represented. So this pick of Scottish music came to be. Frankly when I started it, I had no idea that a couple of these were Scottish bands. Live and learn. Here is my pick of Scottish bands for you. It's not a big place, so it should be interesting how this one turns out. Give me a comment and tell me how it went over for you. Some cool tracks and the response to staying away from the response. Confusing? Yeah, I have no idea what I am saying. Just listen.

Yo Bro 1

This Yo Bro pick is my Bro Country compilation. I have two volumes of it being posted today and tomorrow. The last song on each volume is slightly different those are the versions done by country girls about bro country songs. In today's volume its about wanting to be a country truck girl. Tomorrow, it's a little different. I put them in because they fit even though they aren't bro's sing them. Hope your Christmas, yesterday, was good.

And if you don't like this, I have another pick coming anyway so probably skip that one. I understand. At one time I also thought I didn't like country music. I was wrong, but I did think that.

Simply Sweet Country Wedding 1

This pick was put on my DJ website some time ago (search "Simply Sweet Country Wedding" in google) and this is what it says: Many country favorites just aren't appropriate for certain events. Be very careful to listen to the full lyrics of country songs. Some of the best songs have horrible lyrics (for an event that should have a positive note surrounding it. That goes for all songs really, but country hits tend to be a bit sorrow full. Here's a list of songs that all have a more positive spin on life (sorry, no cheatin', lyin', or stealin'). They're obviously good for any wedding, but also for a company theme party (maybe outdoors?) or, of course, you can sprinkle these throughout any event.

Reggae Pick 3

It's been awhile since I posted Reggae Pick 1 and Reggae Pick 2, but it's finally here. Country Stones Pick

The Rolling Stones played a lot of Rock and Roll, Rhythm and Blues and, surprisingly, a lot of country songs. A friend recently posted a compilation of Rolling Stones Love songs. It's a good collection/playlist. I made this one. There are a few tracks missing, but my criteria tends to be what fits on a CD, so if you want those last few tracks on your own playlist, you will have to add it yourself. I will list them at the end. If I missed one, let me know in the comments. The cd cover is cheesy, but works for me.

Simply Sweet Country Wedding 2

The continuation of the sweet country hits that you can play at a wedding in this pick. The lyrics are all positive, there are no cheating songs, nothing in here that could be considered a wedding killer. I was surprised as a wedding Dj how many songs couples pick that just have the most inappropriate subject matter. All they heard was the chorus or the title and it seemed ok. When I would mention that they should probably re-listen to the lyrics so many people were surprised (and changed their first song). Not just country, but all genres. Most people don't listen to music like we do. Anyway, all safe here.

Best Of Julie Andrews (Ministry family pick) 1

I know. Why did Julie Andrews appear on this at all? It's crazy, but sometimes I just made mixtapes that had covers nothing to do with the contents. This pick is one of them. Although it does have a version of  Favorite Things to keep some semblance of continuity even if it's only in my head. This is really Alien Jourgensen family pick. Which means, of course, automatically it has Ministry and Revolting Cocks on it. But also some other side projects of his. You'll find Cabaret Voltaire, Jello Biafra and Skinny Puppy hidden among these jewels. And one of my favorite alt country bands: Buck Satan. I did make two volumes of this. Side one and side two. And I later made just a Ministry pick. But for now, volume one of Alan (Alien) Jourgensen's family.

Best Of Julie Andrews (Ministry family pick) 1

12 Front Line Assembly featuring Al Jourgensen - Stupidity
13 Pailhead - Man Should Surrender
14 Surgical Meth Machine - Tragic Alert
15 Buck Satan and The 666 Shooters - Quicker Than Liquor

Joe Walsh Pick

Continuing the Eagles Family Pick from yesterday and the year before (or because of Groundhogs Day was it longer?) here is a solo pick of Joe Walsh. Yes, It includes three Eagles tracks. A bunch of solo Joe. Four Barnstorm tracks and a couple of tracks from The James Gang. These are my favorites of Joe Walsh. A couple of the tracks are also on the Family pick, but you won't mind, because they are great. Do listen to all the albums though, they are really extraordinary. The more you listen, the better you will realize they are. I think Joe Walsh is my favorite of the Eagles.

15 Barnstorm - Mother Says
16 Joe Walsh - Country Fair
17 Joe Walsh - All Night Laundry Mat Blues

Shuckin' And Jivin' 2

I still have no idea what "genre" of music this pick is. There are hints of country and hints of hillbilly hick and some that doesn't at all. I asked AI to look at it and it said: Eclectic. I guess so. A couple of these artists appeared on volume 1 of Shuckin' & Jivin' but most are new to this series. I only think of hunting Brer Rabbit in the middle of the country about to meet up with the boys of Deliverance and driving a Harley. The cover is part of the ride that used to be at Disneyland from Bear Country Jamboree. None of the songs have anything to do with that. A few about drinkin' and eatin', a couple of covers and a few what I believe they call novelty records. It just all sounds good together. To me.

Shuckin' And Jivin' 2

Semaglutide 2

A couple of days ago, I posted part one of this pick. Is it really called buttrock? Or post-grunge? Or Dad rock? Who knows? Certainly not me. But I think of it as the Wegovy of rock. Kind of appetite suppressing weight loss of music. For sure the songs can be good, if not cheesy at times. Some are decent hits and at least one is completely AI. Usually one hit and the rest regional. I added a couple of older songs that don't fit what some people call buttrock, and yet they fit in nicely for the GLP of rock. That's why the title is what it is. I'll have at least one more of these, after that you will have to look for your own tracks or find my Bro-Country pick. I think that pairs well with these and a Lone Star beer.

Top Pick 1983

So it's the last Thursday of the month and I have been posting my pick of each year in the 80's and posting them. Never did on this site.  I made these into cassettes and then later into CD's and gave them to friends and radio listeners that asked for them. Until I ran out each year. Like the previous top picks, I do the single songs on Thursday and the next day it's the top ten albums. I was still listening to Earth Wind & Fire, but the albums were not that amazing as they used to be. Rap was getting into my sphere, but lots of New Wave was on my radar. I hope you like these choices. All from stuff I owned at the time and played the hell out of. I wonder how much of this I still would keep on the list? Would you put any of it on your list?

Them's Fighting Words 4 (Southern Rock Pick)

More of the Southern Rock playlist in this pick I call Them's Fighting Words. We're in the fourth volume and you will notice that I am putting in (for the second time) a guy who is definitely not from the South. I'm talking Neil Young. He calls himself a Canerican, but either way he is not from the south and I'm sure that plenty of you think I shouldn't put him in here at all. The first track is pretty much a dig against the South and the track today is just about a Southern Railroad. Not enough to qualify as Southern. But I like these tunes and they are linked to the South. If only because of Lynyrd Skynyrd's response to his songs. These tracks do fit in musically, so for me they stay. I would love to get your feedback on what other songs I should put into this series, because it obviously can keep going for a long time with hits (and should be hits) in plentiful supply.
