Clash Of The Titans 5 (Repost)

This repost of volume five of the electroclash pick has one of my favorite tracks from a band (producer?) I have no idea about. I just know I like the track. Ctrl Z vs Screwface. Especially when it is Zedd. Control Zedd. So obviously not from the US. But what a way to start off a volume than with that intro. A bunch of remixes and cool unknowns. I just like it. No explanations or reasons. All these years and I still have no idea. But at least it's now updated.

Clash of The Titans 4 (Repost)

More electroclash in this series pick repost. Although I would suggest that only some of this is really electroclash and the rest is a some other kind of flavor edm. A couple of tracks that are covers, at least one that feels like a cover but is an original. A few remixes and one of my own edits. All danceable and kinda go well together. Over the last couple of volumes, you've probably noticed some of the same names come up. No accident.

Clash Of The Titans 3 (Repost)

Continuing the Clash Of The Titans playlist series, this repost pick is just getting interesting. A couple of older songs mixed with newer songs that sure seem danceable. Less remixes this outing. I like the mix of Cabaret Voltaire and Talking Heads mixed with Juan Maclean and Hot Chip. I couldn't tell you anything about Fujiya & Miyagi, but I love the sound. Fischerspooner and LCD Soundsystem had hits later but here they were just blips.

Clash Of The Titans 2 (Repost)

Repost of part 2 of this pick I call electroclash, but it really isn't all that. Mostly good danceable new new wave and even some edgier house. Songs from bands no one except for a select few really knows or remembers, but you will dance to it. Is this EDM? Gasp! Who cares? It mixes well, people dance to it and it just sounds good. Stop judging so much. This pick is mine and I like it. Just play it and dance. Love on the edits and remixes.

Clash Of The Titans 1 (Repost)

I'm going to be reposting this series of picks starting here. New uploads.

I originally put together this series of playlists around the time of the emergence of electroclash and although it isn't all that, it sounds enough like it it to start this series. I think I was watching the Clash Of The Titans movie or seeing a computer game or something like that and so this was born. It was more just danceable stuff that mixed real well. I hope you like it. I made a few of these and the theme doesn't hold up really at all. But it didn't matter, because I liked this pick and played it a lot. Lots of remixes.

Richard H Kirk Pick

Yesterday I had the other half of Cabaret Voltaire, today the pick is about Richard H Kirk. He's got quite a bit of solo stuff with his cool songs being pretty long. I also included a track with Cabaret Voltaire and Alien Jorgensen as Acid Horse (a one off). And I included a couple of Kirk's pseudonyms or side ventures such as Dark Magus, Electronic Eye, Sandoz and Sweet Exorcist. And I started the whole compilation with yet one more Cabaret Voltaire song not on the Cab's pick I had last weekend, from a soundtrack which they did a few of. He has so much stuff, it could easily be another volume, but for now, just one. Similar style for the cover. But different.

Richard H Kirk Pick

01 Cabaret Voltaire - Low Cool
02 Richard H. Kirk - Oneski
03 Richard H. Kirk - The Feeling (Of Warmth & Beauty)
04 Acid Horse - No Name No Slogan (Cabaret Voltaire)
05 Electronic Eye - Bush Channel Stepper
06 Sweet Exorcist - Mad Jack
07 Richard H. Kirk - Lets Jack
08 Richard H. Kirk - Magic Words Command
09 Dark Magus - In The Blood
10 Sandoz - Chant To Jah

Stephen Mallinder Pick

Go back a few days to Saturday and see the Cabaret Voltaire pick. This time I took songs by Stephen Mallinder (one of the two main guys of the band) and picked a few solo tracks and some guest spots and a few bands he was in. Add in a Cab's song not on the previous pick and a pick from a Johnny Cash tribute album and you have this compilation. My suggestion is to look up each of these bands and find Dave Ball from Soft Cell and a few other surprise guests. I didn't add in Acid Horse because I used their track in Richard H Kirk's pick, coming soon. Either way all these tracks are a fine addition to the Cabaret Voltaire output.

Stephen Mallinder Pick

01 Stephen Mallinder - Temperature Drop
02 Wrangler - Stupid
03 Stephen Mallinder - Satellite

05 Stephen Mallinder - Colour

13 Stephen Mallinder - Cool Down
14 Wrangler - Lava Land
15 Stephen Mallinder - I Walk The Line

Miss Kittin Pick

Sometime around the end of the 90's I came across electroclash and I liked it. I listened to a bunch of tracks and a darling came across my turntables. French DJ, singer, etc Miss Kittin. I knew nothing about her, except that she apparently loved smoking cigarettes and did a bunch of songs with other artists. I started collecting them. And then she released her own stuff. I liked that. So I made this pick to compile some of my favorites. Since then she's done more of both her own stuff and colloborations, but that will wait for a part two. Over the years, I've noticed that my taste does not always match the taste of the masses. So songs I picked may not match your taste, but they are my favorites from the time. And several are club hits.

18 Miss Kittin & The Hacker - Sweet Dreams

Revolting Cocks Pick

Sort of a continuation of the last several days. This time the pick is Alan Jorgensen with his band Revolting Cocks. Sometimes called RevCo, but usually the whole Cocks name. It's a side project or "Super group" of Front 242, Luc Van Acker and Alien Jorgensen. Later they added and subtracted and really I should make a RevCo Family pick, but I haven't, yet. The Julie Andrews comp from a few days ago is the best so far, but doesn't cover all of this family. Suffice it say that this band is similar to Ministry, and yet totally different. Little bits of everything from Adrian Sherwood to KMFDM and Swans to Ministry. This is my pick over the years, but they have so many other great tracks it probably doesn't do them justice.

Revolting Cocks Pick

01 Revolting Cocks - T.V. Mind
02 Revolting Cocks - No Devotion
03 Revolting Cocks - Big Sexyland
04 Revolting Cocks - Attack Ships On Fire

14 Revolting Cocks - Wizard Of Sextown
15 Revolting Cocks - Me So Horny
16 Revolting Cocks - Suffragette City

Ministry Pick 2

Continuing from yesterday's Pick (and really the last several days) here is part two of Ministry. They were no longer a dance band, but rather an industrial metal band. And they had a great sense of humour hidden underneath all their bravado. Some of the covers they chose, the side projects, etc show some of that. But they also were serious. And political. They got me to start questioning more than any other band. I have always been a libertarian in many ways, but never looked that deeply into issues. I saw how W was manipulating data and facts and that led me to the realization that most politicians on both sides were tools. And in the meantime they had some killer music. Ultimately my research that they started led me to see that Trump was also a tool, but the best choice now to get rid of this infection. Not the solution to all the problems, but certainly not the one who was the cause of the problems. That was the deep state and the leftist marxists in government. Let me shut up about politics for now

Ministry Pick 2

13 Ministry - Fucked
14 Ministry - Lieslieslies
15 Ministry - Gangreen
16 Ministry - Bad Blood
17 Ministry - Supermanic Soul
18 Ministry - Let's Go
19 Ministry - Fear (Is Big Business)
20 Ministry - The Light Pours Out Of Me
21 Ministry - The Last Sucker
22 Ministry - Lay Lady Lay
23 Ministry - Every Day Is Halloween (2010 Evil Version)
24 Ministry - The Great Satan
25 Ministry - Roadhouse Blues
26 Ministry - No W

Ministry Pick 1

I first heard the very early Ministry. Work For Love, Everyday Is Halloween. I liked the dance music. I would dance to it at the clubs where they played that stuff. Back then it was Thursday nights at the Cabaret. One of the only places in town where they would play New Wave. They had bands play live on Fridays and Saturdays. I MC'd the "Last Night Ever" for the Tubes twice (once there). But good handcuff music on Thursdays. Ministry did not play there. I saw them just about when their new album was coming out. At a new hip club. They promoted the show with the two aforementioned songs. That is not what they played. They played stuff from Twitch and The Land Of Rape And Honey! And much, much harder versions of their dance "hits". It was amazing! I saw them on so many tours and they got better and better. My daughter was still in the belly and she heard both Ministry and RevCo so much that later when she was born she would use them (and Blue Monday) as songs to go to sleep. Not to get political about it, but it was one of the reasons I changed my mind about the abortion issue. It was Ministry. I know they would be unhappy to know it. Sorry, man.

Ministry Pick 1

01 Ministry - Work For Love (Sex Slave Edit)
02 Ministry - Every Day Is Halloween
03 Ministry - Over The Shoulder
04 Ministry - You Know What You Are
05 Ministry - Thieves
06 Ministry - Breathe
07 Ministry - Jesus Built My Hotrod
08 Ministry - So What
09 Ministry - Just One Fix
10 Ministry - Burning Inside
11 Ministry - Stigmata
12 Ministry - N.W.O.

Best Of Julie Andrews (Ministry family pick) 2

Part two of the Alan (Alien) Jourgensen family pick. It's the same mixtape, so yes it still has Julie Andrews on the cover. But this time no songs of hers to cover. For a band like this, or a guy as prolific as Jourgensen it was difficult to get this down to just twenty something tracks. The dozen on this volume continue after yesterday's beginning with more Ministry and more side projects and guest spots. Look each up, because they all have way more to offer than these few picks. I do love the original version of the Olivia Newton-John song. Better than the released version.

Best Of Julie Andrews (Ministry family pick) 2

16 Revolting Cocks - Let's Get Physical (Banned Original Mix)
17 Ministry - Breathe
18 Acid Horse - No Name No Slogan (Cabaret Voltaire)
19 Lard - The Power Of Lard
20 Ptp - Rubber Glove Seduction
21 Revolting Cocks - Big Sexyland
22 Ministry - So What
23 Ministry - You Know What You Are
24 Pailhead - I Will Refuse
25 Skinny Puppy - Worlock
26 Surgical Meth Machine - I'm Invisible
27 Buck Satan and The 666 Shooters - I Hate Every Bone in Your Body Except Mine

Best Of Julie Andrews (Ministry family pick) 1

I know. Why did Julie Andrews appear on this at all? It's crazy, but sometimes I just made mixtapes that had covers nothing to do with the contents. This pick is one of them. Although it does have a version of  Favorite Things to keep some semblance of continuity even if it's only in my head. This is really Alien Jourgensen family pick. Which means, of course, automatically it has Ministry and Revolting Cocks on it. But also some other side projects of his. You'll find Cabaret Voltaire, Jello Biafra and Skinny Puppy hidden among these jewels. And one of my favorite alt country bands: Buck Satan. I did make two volumes of this. Side one and side two. And I later made just a Ministry pick. But for now, volume one of Alan (Alien) Jourgensen's family.

Best Of Julie Andrews (Ministry family pick) 1

01 Ministry - You Goddamned Son Of A Bitch
02 Lard - Hellfudge
03 Acid Horse - No Name No Slogan (Hypo Luxa-Hermes Pan)
04 Ministry - Burning Inside
05 Ptp - Favorite Things
06 Ministry - Stigmata
07 Revolting Cocks - Stainless Steel Providers
08 Revolting Cocks - Attack Ships On Fire
09 Revolting Cocks - Something Wonderful
10 Ministry - Twitch (Version II)
11 1000 Homo Djs - Supernaut
12 Front Line Assembly featuring Al Jourgensen - Stupidity
13 Pailhead - Man Should Surrender
14 Surgical Meth Machine - Tragic Alert
15 Buck Satan and The 666 Shooters - Quicker Than Liquor

Cabaret Voltaire Pick

It was and it wasn't hard to make this pick. First, they have several greatest hits compilations. Anyone of them is good. All of them together make a great look. My pick is slightly different than all of those. First I make no distinction between the early and late Cabaret Voltaire work. My first exposure to them was Mix-Up from 1979. I've liked every album since. That made it very difficult. Maybe I was  less enthused by Johnny YesNo, but I even liked Three Mantras. The first song I connected with was a cover of the Seeds. Genius! Then I couldn't get the lyric "70 Billion People on the Earth, Where are They Hiding?" out of my head. They took a turn and I followed. Micro-Phonies and Drinking Gasoline were on my turntables all the time. Around that time I finally saw them live. Multiple times. My favorite being in London in some small club in some industrial area. I called last minute to a record company rep and got my name on the list as I stepped up to the window. They didn't care and just let me in. I saw them on both coasts of the USA. If pressured I might say that Throbbing Gristle is my favorite of the two, but I would be hard pressed to make the choice.

Cabaret Voltaire Pick

01 Cabaret Voltaire - Just Fascination
02 Cabaret Voltaire - Do Right
03 Cabaret Voltaire - Sensoria
04 Cabaret Voltaire - Radical Chic
05 Cabaret Voltaire - Landslide
06 Cabaret Voltaire - Yashar
07 Cabaret Voltaire - What is Real
08 Cabaret Voltaire - Easy Life
09 Cabaret Voltaire - Sex, Money, Freaks
10 Cabaret Voltaire - Smooth
11 Cabaret Voltaire - I Want You
12 Cabaret Voltaire - Vasto
13 Cabaret Voltaire - No Escape
14 Cabaret Voltaire - Sluggin' For Jesus
15 Cabaret Voltaire - Kneel To The Boss

Buzzcocks Family

Yesterday I posted up Howard Devoto family and a lot of that could fit with this, so I included only two Magazine tracks, the rest you can find yesterday. My pick includes a lot of the Buzzcocks over the years (even after the death of Pete Shelley). A little of my favorite Buzzcocks, four Pete Shelley solo tracks and then a smattering of tracks from other members of the Buzzcocks. Steve Diggle who kept them going, Barry Adamson (check out his family pick for more). A couple of side projects for John Maher, Mike Joyce and solo track from Tony Barber round out the pick. Not too much of a rabbit hole, but enough to get you started looking. The Buzzcocks were one of those bands that I never understood why they didn't reach mainstream success more than they did. Their songs are mostly pure pop. But then you hit one or two and the lyrics tell you why they were banned on a few occasions.

Buzzcocks Family

01 Buzzcocks - Wish I Never Loved You
02 Buzzcocks - I Don't Mind
03 Buzzcocks - Why Can't I Touch It
04 Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen in Love (with Someone You Shouldn't've)

19 Barry Adamson - Autodestruction
20 Morrissey - Interesting Drug
21 Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls - Dream Sequence I
22 Tony Barber - Someday
23 John Cooper Clarke - I Don't Want To Be Nice

Howard Devoto Family

This pick is cool. It can't help it. Devoto was the beginning of the Buzzcocks, the beginning and all of Magazine. Either one of those two bands would relegate him to the cool pile. But add in Luxuria and his solo stuff and he is beyond cool. His mug is pure uncool geek and that makes him cool. His music is amazing and that sure helps. He's one of the few artists who have a song that mentions the San Fernando Valley (where I lived for years). That's cool. Bing Crosby also sings about the Valley. As does Frank Zappa. All cool cats. I like this pick. All the songs are great.

Howard Devoto Family

01 Buzzcocks - Boredom

15 Howard Devoto - Rainy Season
16 Luxuria - Beast Box
17 Luxuria - The Beast Is Dreaming
18 Luxuria - Public Highway
19 Luxuria - Jezebel

Lydia Lunch Box

I have to state up front, that I love Lydia Lunch. She's a firecracker. I've met her a few times, seen her play live both as a singer and as a spoken word poet. I don't know what it is, but it seems like there is a connection everytime we've been together. She would not know my name from adam, but every single time we've ended up flirting, playing grab ass or something. That's not because I am somebody, but she's just flirty and I am okay with it. I encourage it with her. She's short compared to me and she's trouble all the way through! And I mean that in a good way. That being said, she will hate my pick here. It's got tracks she doesn't like. But sorry, I do. These are my favorites out of the non-spoken word recordings I have. Every time I find something from her, I have to get it. Yes, I am a fan.

Lydia Lunch Box

11 Lydia Lunch With Sonic Youth - Death Valley 69
12 James White & The Blacks - Stained Sheets
13 Lydia Lunch With The Anubian Lights - Champagne, Cocaine & Nicotine Stains

Jimmy Somerville Family

This pick kind of fits in with last few days of posts, but this time the emphasis is on Jimmy Somerville. First known as the falsetto voice of Bronski Beat, he soon left to start the band Communards. Took a couple of people who had played on the early Bronski Beat albums and put out a couple of albums and a few singles, Then went "solo". He guested on a few tracks for others, usually as back singer. I included a few at the end. He had a great falsetto, supposedly some weird politics, but I don't judge him by that because he never showed that side to me. I only heard second hand. I like his voice.

Jimmy Somerville Family

01 Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy
02 Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way
03 Bronski Beat - Ain't Necessarily So

20 Carmel - One Fine Day

Repost: Vince Clarke Family Pick

Vince Clarke is a synth-pop genius, innovator. He started Depeche Mode. He was Yaz or Yazoo (depending on where you were in the world). He is Erasure. And a dozen other projects that you may or may not have heard. It seems to me, that he gets a new singer and does a project. Some have lasted longer than others (obviously in Erasure he's been there a long time). Some lasted one single. But all have lasting importance in the musical world. Since he was in some longer than others, I took my favorites from those bands in this pick. The singles, I could only pick one. And I still had too many to pick from. So if I missed your favorite, sorry. There's just a lot to choose from. If you do not know this man, shame on you, but now you have no excuse.

Vince Clarke Family

01 Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough
02 Depeche Mode - Dreaming Of Me
03 Depeche Mode - New Life

05 Yazoo - Only You
06 Yazoo - Nobody's Diary
07 Yazoo - Situation
08 The Assembly - Never Never
09 Vince Clarke & Paul Quinn - One Day
10 Erasure - Oh L'Amour
11 Erasure - Sometimes
12 Erasure - Chains Of Love
13 Erasure - A Little Respect
14 Erasure - Love To Hate You
15 Erasure - Take A Chance On Me
16 Erasure - Always
17 The Clarke & Ware Experiment - Open Our Eyes
18 VCMG - Spock
19 Vince Clarke & Paul Hartnoll - Better Have A Drink To Think
20 West India Company - Ave Maria (Om Ganesha) (Extended Version)

Bronski Family

Bronski Beat was Jimmy Somerville, Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbachek. They sang with people like Eartha Kitt and Marc Almond. Steve and Larry carried on after Jimmy left to form Communards and some solo work. They got a few new singers. Jon Foster appeared on Hit That Perfect Beat and then Jonathan Hellyer came around Cha Cha Heels. I have tracks from each on here. One of my favorites is the almost ten minute collaboration with Marc Almond. Distinctly Bronski, but oh so Almond. You might be thinking why is Die Antwoord on this pick? Well, it is a track written by Steve and Larry. Just thinking: This pick reminds me a lot of the Vince Clarke pick I made some time ago so I might just repost it tomorrow.

Bronski Family

01 Eartha Kitt and Bronski Beat - My Discarded Men
02 Bronski Beat - One More Chance (7 Version)
03 Eartha Kitt and Bronski Beat - Cha Cha Heels (Radio Mix)

05 Bronski Beat - C'mon! C'mon!
06 Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way
07 Bronski Beat - Run from Love

10 Bronski Beat - Heatwave
11 Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy (Full 12 Version)

Slipped My Disco 5

I started this pick years ago. Always fascinated by the concept of artists doing songs that are not their genre. You'll find all sorts of picks on this site with that premise. What's funny to me is when a band does that and becomes so well known for that one off-genre track that they change completely. Check out some of the other Slipped My Disco compilations to see some of those. This volume has more of the ones that were just tries (some hits, some misses). I mean Steve Miller was never going to known for this track. A few of the others are better swings. I always crack up listening to the Sweet. They tried so many different genres and some of their early glam almost sounds like disco, so I can see why they tried. But I'd rather listen to Love Is Like Oxygen anytime. That being said Ballroom Blitz is not far away from disco. Like all the others, posted on a Saturday nite.

What's The Connection? Alive 1

I can make several of these connections. There are lots of songs about being Alive. I didn't include the Bee Gees (let's save it for number two). I put Dweezil Zappa on instead. Some old stuff on here and some newer. I mean c'mon, Chainsmokers AND Ultravox? I do like this one. I hope you do too. The Gene Wilder cover was based on the Kill Me WTC, but completely changed. Look closely at the words (singular) and you can find Teri Garr (from that same movie). What hump? Those are lovely lady lumps.

Wah?

Like in Wha'Happen? I don't know. I had been working on a mixtape at the end of last year which turned into Feel Like It and that led to WTF? and I had a bunch of songs I didn't use for either. And I was collecting a few more that I wanted in a mixtape. This popped out. There is no rhyme or reason to this. The mashup at the beginning was something I had been working on for a little bit. Always wanted to use 10cc and Hall & Oates for something. This came out. Wha? And how does it work with Tower Of Power? And Pitbull? It doesn't. I put in another mashup (not mine this time). I also added a couple of extended remixes of songs that I wanted to pick for this. The CJ & Co. was because of K's Disco Fever post on Butterboy's site. I just felt it was terrible to not have that album mix represented, especially since it was the very first track played at Studio 54. So, blame that one on K. Ask me some time about living in the Bay Area and having ToP playing anywhere they can. What a great band! This track was not the big hit, but it was for us.

What's The Connection? Sparkle 1

I was listening to a bunch of old Blaxploitation records and adjacent. Wandered off a bit and soon was listening to Curtis Mayfield, Tower Of Power, Earth, Wind & Fire and Cameo all of them had a Sparkle song. That's when I started making this Connection. All songs with Sparkle in the title. It went a bit away from the original starting point, but all good songs. And I think by now you get that I don't care too much about the same genre. I like them all. Rock, Reggae, old, new, it doesn't matter as long as I like it.

What's The Connection? Spiders 2

Finally I get to post volume two of the Spider connection. The last one had some great tracks on it, but I didn't have the room for these ones. Now you get them. Volume one of the Spider WTC is good, though. Make sure you get it. This one has Spiderman theme. Not the Ramones version or the original. This time from Aerosmith. Just seemed like the right choice, even though I like several other versions a lot, perhaps even more. Enjoy these selections. Remember, I made this and I do not like Spiders at all.

Smooth & Tangy BBQ 2

More of the country BBQ pick. These are some more of the Smooth and Tangy songs like volume 1 a few days ago. This is pretty mainstream country. Like the others it started with some playlists in a DJ magazine. It will play well at any BBQ where you have country fans. In Texas, they are very proud of their BBQ. You cannot go into a decent restaurant and not be able to order some kind of brisket. Taco brisket, breakfast brisket. I haven't found it yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to see brisket ice cream.

Exicinco (Exitos 5)

More of the Exitos series of picks. This pick is volume five and perfect for Cinco De Mayo. Some of my favorites mixed together. Different genres within the Latino "label" and all with my weird naming convention. Pardon me if you actually speak or write fluent Spanish. I had four years, but I obviously learned more in the restaurants I worked at and the soccer teams I played on. I even coached youth soccer and had to be able to speak my own broken Spanish to the parents (the kids had no problems with English). Having visited Central and Southern America and lived in areas of town where I was the only non-Latino on the block, I got exposed to some great music from all over, especially once everyone knew I was the "white" DJ who actually liked their favorite songs and played them at the block parties. These can be played at any mixed event and keep people happy. And have a great Cinco De Mayo!

May The Fourth Be With You

Should have made this some time ago, but just didn't get around to finishing it. Always liked that Sar Wars fans took over May 4th as their own holiday. I especially like puns. And using May The Force Be With You is genius. Hence this pick. All Star Wars related songs. Some are about the movie or characters, some make new canon. A few covers of the soundtrack. I especially like Big Daddy's surf theme. Some use sound efx from the movies. The Earthlings and 2 Skinnee J's come to mind. I had to put two Weird Al songs in here to start and end the saga. I probably have enough to make part two for next year, but if you have a good track in mind that is not on here, recommend it in the comments. I will probably use it.
