Clash Of The Titans 3

Continuing the Clash Of The Titans playlist series, this pick is just getting interesting. A couple of older songs mixed with newer songs that sure seem danceable. Less remixes this outing. I like the mix of Cabaret Voltaire and Talking Heads mixed with Juan Maclean and Hot Chip. I couldn't tell you anything about Fujiya & Miyagi, but I love the sound. Fischerspooner and LCD Soundsystem had hits later but here they were just blips.

Clash Of The Titans 2

Part 2 of this series I call electroclash, but it really isn't all that. Mostly good danceable new new wave and even some edgier house. Songs from bands no one except for a select few really knows or remembers, but you will dance to it. Is this EDM? Gasp! Who cares? It mixes well, people dance to it and it just sounds good. Stop judging so much. This pick is mine and I like it. Just play it and dance. Love on the edits and remixes.

Clash Of The Titans 1

I put together this series of playlists around the time of the emergence of electroclash and although it isn't all that, it sounds enough like it it to start this series. I think I was watching the Clash Of The Titans movie or seeing a computer game or something like that and so this was born. It was more just danceable stuff that mixed real well. I hope you like it. I made a few of these and the theme doesn't hold up really at all. But it didn't matter, because I liked this pick and played it a lot. Lots of remixes.

Awesome Downtime 6

This is the last of the series (at least posted here). This is a George Glass pick. He's from Groovy Library and you should check it out. He has really well done compilations on his site. I really loved this series and got permission to post it here, but now you will have to get any newer ones at his site. I hope you liked the ones I posted here. I like them, so tough luck if you don't. I get impressed with someone that makes a compilation that is so unlike anything I would have picked and yet I think it's great.

Awesome Downtime 5

Lucky for us today, we have another of the Awesome Downtime playlist series (that I wish I had compiled, but was put together by George Glass at his Groovy Library blog). The closest I have that I picked is either my Am I Bent pick or my Textures series pick And none of them are anything quite like this series. He calls it downtempo, instrumental hip hop, chill hop, trip hop, nu jazz, instrumental soul jazz, but what do I know. I just like the combo George put together. His album covers are a gas and the music is even better. I will post one more and after that you will just have to go to his site to see if he posts anymore.

Awesome Downtime 3

We've already had a couple of these Awesome Downtime playlists from George Glass (from Groovy Library) and I asked him to give me a little backstory. Here's what he wrote about his pick:

"I don't recall hearing the term "Downtime" until it came time to name the first comp. I just wanted to come up with something other than known genres (downtempo, chill, ambient, etc). How it started? During the mid 90s, I was exploring a lot of drum 'n' bass music. It became apparent in no time that it wasn't all just fast beats, but the ambience as well. And from there, it lead me to downtempo, chill, etc. A few year back, I started to create playlists for the bath, mainly with the music aforementioned. I didn't want the obligatory spa music, but melodic yet relaxing tunes not usually sleep inducing. And so in hindsight, you can find beauty in just about any style/genre of music. It's the patience in finding it. And that's the (very) condensed version."

Awesome Downtime 2

Part two of this great series by George Glass of the Groovy Library blog. As George says: Press play, sit back, relax, groove... And I have been doing that since I fist heard these comps. I said it yesterday and I will say it again, I rarely put other people's compilations up here, but I really wanted to for this series. It's George's Pick. I can't tell you much about why he picked these songs (maybe he'll comment and tell us why.) I don't know how he picks his covers. I just know I like them. I listen to this series probably more than I should. Hopefully you enjoy it too.

Awesome Downtime 1

This compilation series is from a guest, George Glass, who has the blog Groovy Library which I subscribe to. He posted a series on his site that I absolutely love, called Awesome Downtime. I'm sure he will have a ton more, but I asked him if we could post the first several on this site, too. So here is the first in the series. Normally I post either how I came up with the idea or the title, but I don't know any of that. I just know that I have been listening to it regularly since I first came across them (at yet another site- Butterboy). I will post the next several over the next few days. I did not change the cover, but did run the files through Platinum Notes and basically did what I say in my Prepare MP3 article. Rezipped it and posted it.

Here's what George wrote on his site about this series:
Note: Every selection is good to great in my books. All tracks (including the previous downtime comp) and any future downtime comps, I listen on various occasions be it in the bath, relaxing, or simply when I feel like it. I find relaxing music in all kinds of genres, and not just something you'd hear in a spa. I have nothing against the latter (I listen to it myself) but I want the comps to be more eclectic. I've found over the years several D&B (drum & bass) tracks that are also soothing. I specify them as smooth d&b. Yes, faster beats can be tranquil. Well, it works for me.

Cool Jazz 2 (no jazz at all included)

This punk playlist pick is a recreation of the second cassette of the Cool Jazz series. Like being Rick Rolled, these playlists were a deception. Not Jazz. It was/is misinformation and disinformation. The cover was deceptive too. This was just around the time that people began painting nude women to look like they were dressed and photographing them in public, with almost no one figuring out that they were wearing only paint. Even the punk part of this pick was deceptive. Because it was more pop punk mixed in with some real punk. This volume makes it much more clear that this was not for kids. It is progressively more adult than volume one. By design. It gets more hardcore as you go along and then the stress releases and it becomes more pop. Humor mixed with division mixed with sex mixed with in your face confrontation. It takes the first amendment for this compilation to exist. Someone will be pissed off by at least one song. That, to me, is what punk is/was and also what the first amendment means and stands for. In life it is the same way, if somebody says something offensive and they are allowed to say it, then you have freedom. Misinformation, Disinformation are euphemisms for censorship. So enjoy your freedom!

Cool Jazz 1 (not jazz at all)

This was a cassette. And before I go on, this has nothing to do with Jazz. Cool or Hot. So if you came looking for Jazz, be prepared to be disappointed. I had this cassette in my car to throw people off. There were always people who wanted to pick what I played in my crazy hot rod cars. And this was one that they often picked thinking it was Jazz. It was my punk pick. Still is. You may have seen the Punk Primer that I previously posted. That was for kids. This was not for kids, although there is some overlap. I just didn't limit my choices based on content. So this playlist could ease people into punk rock. Sort of the pop side of punk. I had enough for a couple of volumes. Always fun to pull out. And very deceptive all around. Tell you more tomorrow.

Undercover (Noise) 2

A continuation of the Undercover series and the the noise/industrial series. As stated before in part one, this was a cassette originally before this pick was transformed into a CD and then this playlist. Covers here include a cover of Throbbing Gristle (already an industrial band) but pared with a Righteous Brothers hit to make this twofer medley. And then also TG doing their own cover of a song that Frank Sinatra made famous. I like that there is a cover of Sisters Of Mercy followed by Sisters Of Mercy doing a Hot Chocolate cover. Cracks me up every time. A couple more disco songs (Abba and Carl Douglas), Pink Floyd, Olivia Newton-John and more round off this side two. Make sure you get side one.

Undercover (Noise) 1

More of the Undercover series. Again this pick was first a cassette. Side one will posted today. You can tell that I like cover versions of different songs. Less tracks today because the songs are longer. I call this (Noise) but it could have been (Industrial). I suppose it is both industrial and noise. Some totally cool tracks here in this pick. A few that are better than the originals and most all of them are totally different from the originals.

Undercover (Noise) 1

Undercover (Punk) 2

This is side two of the Undercover (Punk) series. This pick was the other side of the cassette. And like side 1 is all cover versions done in the punk style, by mostly punk bands. Covers of Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin, Sweet, Grateful Dead, even the Mary Tyler Moore Show theme song. You can't get better versions than these. I have another covers series that does all disco songs (A Life Of Vice) that has a few songs that could have made it on to this series, but I tried not to repeat.

34 The Cramps - Psychotic Reaction

Undercover (Punk) 1

This series started as a cassette. This was side 1. All covers by punk bands. Punk covers of a variety of songs. There are a million of them and so this pick was just my favorites of the ones that I owned. The title was a play on the show Undercover Boss. Which has nothing to do with the content. But my mind works in mysterious ways. I made that connection somehow. There was one song that I was looking for (and still do not have, so if you know how I can get it, comment below) and that's by the band SVDB and the Theme From Courtship of Eddie's Father (Best Friend). Which is a band that featured Brandon Cruz (Eddie) on vocals.

Tolerable Schlock

I made this playlist (originally a CD) for a co-worker. I shared an office with this person. I can't remember her name, but she always listened to this most schlocky music ever. Blandish music with no soul. And the same stuff everyday. So I made this pick of schlocky music. Yes it was also schlocky, but much more tolerable for me. So she still played schlocky music, but every now and again, she would play this. And I was less perturbed. Even enjoyed myself. I hope you like this, too. Designed to be office friendly.

Unexposed Silver Halides 2

Here's side two of the Unexposed Silver Halides cassette (obviously the pick has been redone to fit a CD and this playlist.) But the damage has been done. I am not sure that I would make this cassette again. It was cool for the time, but I like much better songs now. Not my best pick from Herbie Hancock. I definitely would not pick that Romantics song today. But that's what I was listening to at that time, so I have to live with the choice. It's interesting anyway. I bet after I listen to it again, it will make more sense to me again.

Unexposed Silver Halides 2

20 A Flock Of Seagulls - (It's Not Me) Talking
21 Weird Al Yankovic - Eat It

Unexposed Silver Halides 1

Let's start with the name. I was doing a bunch of photography at the time. Black and white real film. Had a lot of fun. I had a completely manual Pentax K. The songs were just songs I was really listening to at the time. And nothing to do with photography. A lot of the stuff coming out had computerized effects. And I liked it. Even the Neil Young. Obviously a few tracks from the soundtrack that was popular then. I think you can figure it out. This is side one of the cassette. This cassette pick became the CD and then the playlist. Enjoy it or not side 2 will be here tomorrow.

Unexposed Silver Halides 1

01 Kissing The Pink - Frightened In France
02 Weird Al Yankovic - The Brady Bunch

Wild, Beautiful & Damned

Sometime in the early 80's I made this cassette. Which I re-did as a CD and then now as a playlist. The cassette had some weird scribbles of purple on the cover, which I tried to stay true to in redesigning the CD cover. There is no real theme to this and was just music I liked at the time. The Ultravox! song that I named the cassette after was particularly one of my favorites (being a Brian Eno production) and why I decided to make this pick in the first place. Most of it was stuff that was not being played on the radio. Well, obviously Beat It was played everywhere. But to me they all could co-exist together. I never understood why some of these tracks didn't get more popular. The Joe Jackson, the Tom Tom Club, the Visage tracks, for instance, and my favorite Depeche Mode song that I had on multiple 12" singles (all with different covers). Why weren't they major hits on every station. I can understand that the Ultravox! was an acquired taste. I don't pretend to know the answer. I just liked all of this.

Surfing & Spying 2

Volume two of the cassette I made so long ago. This is the Spying side of the cassette. Although I said yesterday. the content is not quite so much divided. This pick has surf songs on both sides and frankly the most spying stuff is on the surfing side. I can't explain it. It's just the way it turned out. Either way this pick is from my collection back then, recreated as a playlist for you. I took the original cassette cover that I had hand drawn, scanned it and used parts of it for this cover.

39 Mailbooz - My Baby Came Back On the Last Wave Today

Surfing & Spying 1

This is from a cassette I made a long time ago. One side I called Surfing and the other I called Spying. This is the first side. This pick includes a bunch of Surfing songs or beach songs, much of it instrumental. A few words here and there (tequila!). Each side is NOT really separated by Surf and Spy. But that was the premise of the whole cassette. The cover I recreated from the cassette as a CD and now it's the playlist cover. All songs that are and were in my collection.

Michael Jackson Pick

I wasn't going to post this, but some people messaged me and asked why the disco (leopard) series hardly had any Michael Jackson in it. The reason is this playlist. Any disco party I played, I would of course play the songs in the disco series that I have already posted, but I also brought along this playlist of my MJ picks. Yes. I also brought along Saturday Night Fever, some extra Bee Gee's etc. I wasn't going to post this, because you can find tons of great Michael Jackson greatest hits albums out there. This is just my pick. Many of you will disagree with some of my choices, but I stand by them. Tell me your favorites in the comments. You've probably already seen the companion Jacksons playlist.

Surf Beat 2

If you saw yesterday's post you will know the origin story. If you didn't see it, go back and read it. Either way. I listened to volume one for years. Always loved it, but knew I had skipped a bunch of songs that I used to play. That and I had since discovered a couple of bands that I would have played if they were around at the time (for sure the Surfrajettes - how cool are they!?). So it was time to make volume 2. So I made volume 2 and I really liked it too. My pick of Surf and Punk songs that make up this playlist are just the ticket for you to skate and thrash to this summer, so I am bringing it out again. I never made volume three, but listening to this again might inspire me.

Surf Beat 1

I love surf music and I love punk music. I used to do a radio show with both of those elements called Surf Beat. Back in the 80's you played mostly records (LP's and 45's) and on the radio you had carts. These looked like 8-tracks, but played stereo. So to do a show that included some really short songs, you had to have some on cart and be quick changing records (all while keeping track of what you played, breaks etc.) Very difficult. But that's where the Surf Beat playlist came from. This is my pick from that. Playing good Surf songs, good Punk songs and having it mix well. Classic Surf. Classic Punk.

Snowballin' 6

By now you either are sick of this playlist series or you are hoping for more. I'm hoping it's the latter, but if it is the former, you are in luck because this is the last one. Unless you come up with a few comments with your suggestions and it inspires me to make another volume. Let's make YOUR pick. But at just over a hundred, I think it's pretty good. I do have more kinda waiting in the wings to make another playlist. It just depends. A whole spectrum of big to medium to small hits played on the dancefloor on this last one. Thanks for sticking to the end.

101 Baccara - Love You Till I Die
102 Cameo - We All Know Who We Are
103 Change - Sharing Your Love

Snowballin' 5

This is volume five and it is one of my favorites because it includes some little known disco ballads amongst the hits. Picks like Sparkle never hit any charts, were not even released as singles and yet got dancefloor recognition as a great song to slow dance to. Sun had minor dance hits, but nothing for their ballads. Even Donna Summer who rocked the charts throughout the late 70's and early 80's only had Last Dance as a "slow" song in the charts and it was only partially a ballad. Heatwave had both disco dance charters and ballads that are still being played. Their song here is not the "hit" and yet has all the makings of one. Should have been one. That mix of picks in this playlist is what make it so special.

Snowballin' 5

79 Sun - I Want To Be With You (Forever)
80 Con Funk Shun - Give Your Love To Me
81 Taste Of Honey - Sukiyaki
82 Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - My Eyes Adored You
83 Stylistics - You Are Everything
84 Champaign - How 'Bout Us
85 Cameo - Sparkle
86 Bee Gees - Love So Right

Snowballin' 4

I can't believe we're this far in to this series. Volume four of the Snowballin' pick. This playlist series has hits played on the radio, some that were only played in clubs and some album only tracks. But this volume has more of the former. But all of them were played in clubs for some reason or another. KC was not known for the great disco ballads, but this one just shows that he could. Bee Gees of course could and the first two picks show that well. Chicago with their horns, just like Earth, Wind & Fire, could really do a ballad, but were originally known for being rockers. That changed after this pick.

Snowballin' 4

50 Bee Gees - Too Much Heaven
51 Samantha Sang - Emotion

65 The Chi-Lites - Oh Girl
66 Gino Vannelli - I Just Wanna Stop
67 Stylistics - Betcha By Golly, Wow
68 Barry White - Just The Way You Are

Snowballin' 3

Volume three of this playlist pick is a great example of how these worked. Hits from the Commodores were played everywhere on the radio and in clubs. Earth, Wind  & Fire had hits, but his track was certainly not one of them. Several others in this list are exactly the same. Not hits. But they were played on the dancefloor and when they did, it was full. Numbering continues as we go. We're only at the halfway point here. If you were around during this time, you will recognize a lot of these tracks. And Johnny Rivers says it all with his song the inspiration of this compilation.

Snowballin' 3

32 Johnny Rivers - Swayin' To The Music (Slow Dancin')

47 Rufus featuring Chaka Khan - Sweet Thing
48 Sharon Redd - Takin' A Chance On Love
49 High Inergy - You Can't Turn Me Off (In The Middle Of Turning Me On)

Snowballin' 2

Part two of this playlist pick continues down the slow disco road. Ballads. Slow Dancing. Swaying to the music. Some of these were hits in this series, but many were not. And you'll notice a couple of things. One is that not all of these artists had disco hits (or were even considered disco artists.) There was a lot more variety on disco floors back then. And you will also notice that some of these were not even released as singles (let alone hit a chart). Slow ballads could appear hidden on albums or the back of 12 inch singles. You never knew where. But DJ's found them and played them anyway.

Snowballin' 2

15 Boz Scaggs - Look What You've Done To Me
16 Stevie Wonder - Knocks Me Off My Feet
17 Rufus featuring Chaka Khan - Hollywood
18 Heatwave - Mind Blowing Decisions
19 Roberta Flack - Feel Like Makin' Love
20 Isaac Hayes - The Look Of Love
21 Earth Wind & Fire - I'll Write A Song For You
22 Amazing Rhythm Aces - Third Rate Romance
23 Morris Albert - Feelings
24 Tower Of Power - You're Still A Young Man
25 Eric Carmen - All By Myself
26 England Dan And John Ford Coley - I'd Really Love To See You Tonight
27 Rose Royce - I Wanna Get Next To You
28 Commodores - Easy
29 Cameo - It's Over
30 Ray, Goodman & Brown - Special Lady
31 Floaters - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me

Snowballin' 1

This is a multipart series of songs that I just rarely see, There are all kinds of compilations of disco hits. I posted a bunch of them in the past week or so. But disco ballads is another thing. These are all songs from around the disco era, that were played at proms, high school dances and yes, even clubs to slow it down so you could prepare for some action. The Snowball dance was just the slow dance swaying back and forth that everybody did. If you were good, or more daring, your leg was between the other person's legs and vice versa, making a very sexy move. I hope you like this playlist pick.
