What's The Connection? Mighty 1

Making this connection started with Earth, Wind & Fire. Always liked that song (and the whole album) and it wasn't that popular yet. It was the next couple of albums that brought them some stardom. But this was the start of the incline. I put two versions of  You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) because both are great and I couldn't choose. The best part is when I added the movie/TV soundtracks. Both are pretty decent. I do not know if they were ever redone by any rock bands, but they would make great candidates for songs. I used the Mouse for the cover, because, well, why not? Nothing else is quite so mighty.

This connection of dirty songs is related to the Dirt connection I did earlier. Got more Dirt and Dirty songs coming up sometime. But these are my favorite of the bunch. Album cover is similar, so they go together. Look for more dirty songs later, I think I have another several hours more to go.

What's The Connection? Atoms

I started working on this along with the Bill Nelson pick and the Atomic WTC. I will state right up front that I left of Pink Floyd Atom Heart Mother which I love, but it was just too long and I would have to leave off a several of the others I wanted to include. So don't be mad, just add it in yourself if you want. All Atom songs except for two. One Atomic one left over from the previously mentioned connection and one French song. Obviously there is some Bill Nelson. There is also one track from Anubian Lights who I saw live with Lydia Lunch once and I loved their stuff. Bought a bunch of CD's at the time. Enjoy how eclectic this one is.

Kinks Kovers

This was fun to do. But also frustrating at the same time. I like the Kinks and originally was making a pick of my favorite Kinks songs. But I got to the frustrating part. The Kinks are great songwriters and sometimes great at recording. They are too British for me at times and my favorites are sometimes not anywhere near the top listened to songs by the Kinks. I compare them to the Who, but the Who were better in the studio. For instance, You Really Got Me. A great song. But Van Halen does it way better than the Kinks. In fact I like that song done better by 801 with Brian Eno. And Stop Your Sobbing. There is no doubt that the Pretenders do a much better version of the song. So that's not true for every song. But definitely a few. So I took some of my favorite covers of Kinks songs and put this together. Not an end all be all covers collection, just some of my favorites. Many versions of songs on this one. Some of my favorites: Shonen Knife, The Fall, Stranglers, The Jam, Nancy Sinatra, etc.

Zombies Family Pick

Nothing to do with the undead. This has to do with the band the Zombies and the family pick. So Argent, Colin Blumstone solo and either of them as a guest like Rod Argent with the Who or Blumstone with Alan Parsons. Good songs all the way through. It's funny for years I had heard Santana do She's Not There, but once I heard the Zombies original version, it's hard to hear Jorge anymore. I'm sure you have your favorite Zombies familial pick that I didn't include, just add it into the comments. I'd love to know what you like.

Boy Band Pick 2

Ok, it's part two of the Boy Bands pick. This volume includes some of the Korean wave of boy bands. So enjoy those. I also added a few bands that I wanted to include in yesterday's volume, but ran out of room. Some of these bands in these volumes are bands because some producer made them up. Others were families and still others just friends. But I would say the majority are just made up bands that held some kind of audtions. It's up to you to figure out which is which. I don't really care, I just want them to be good bands. Or atleast good songs.

Boy Band Pick 1

I know that I think of something when I hear Boy Band. And in a different situation, something else comes to mind. It can mean so many different things. I have a three volume set that encompasses a bit of that. This pick of Boy Bands starts with the basic boy bands+ that my daughter probably listened to in the 90's, some a little earlier and some a little later. I started this because I was watching a couple of documentaries. That led me on the path. Boy Bands changed around Boyz II Men. I have them, New Kids, New Edition and all the way through One Direction. I did not include any of the K-Pop stuff here on volume 1, but did include a fake soundtrack band and comedy bands. Because they sound so great!

What's The Connection? Rose Is A Rose

This started out as one of my cassettes and eventually became this Connection. Many of the first songs were featured on a live WTC years ago. I added a few as I had already found them to make the cassette. I couldn't bear to get rid of any, so it's still over an hour and a half. Oh well. Couple of Death in June songs, the latter one on the list was added after the live show. Only one of the reggae tracks appeared on the show, but did appear on the cassette. Sometime in the future I will post my La Vie En Rose connection. It's donw, except for the cover. Maybe I will make it based on this cover. If I remember correctly, the flower came from a photo I took in my front yard rose garden years ago.

Steve Winwood Pick

No longer little or young, Steve Winwood can no longer be called anything but Steve. As a member of  The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic and on his own, he's proven his worth over the years. I'm sure there is probably a best of compilation out there somewhere with tracks from all of these entities, but I didn't have it, so I made my own. Hopefully, you like this sampling. I am sure that  I am missing someone's favorite, but hopefully not too many. Let me know what you couldn't live without. You will notice that the CD cover says pre-concert pick. When I went to concerts that were a drive away, I usually made a CD's pick of music to get me and my passengers in the mood for the concert and on the way home (and play some hits that may not get played at the event, so we were all always satisfied.) I never re-did the cover.

So this WTC is all songs with Let and Down in the title. Some are Never Let Me Down and some are Let Me Down Easy or even just Let Down as in disappointment. Sammy Van Hagar Pick

When Sammy Hagar first joined Van Halen they called it Van Hagar. And in a way it was correct, but in an another not at all. Sammy Hagar definitely was a strong front man before joining. I saw him play live several times. On of the best concerts ever. He played forever, had great songs, great camaraderie with the crowd. That continued when he played with Van Halen. Seeing them live after Sammy it was different, yet still Van Halen. Some of the greastest songs came out of that pairing. No surprise. This pick shows Sammy had some great songs with Montrose, in his solo 80's, with Van Halen and afterwards when he left the group. Too many to do it justice really. I didn't include any of the later Cabo Wabo stuff and just used touchpoints everywhere else, but you'll get the idea. Again, like with Roth, there are two doubles between Eddie's pick and Sammy's. It had to be.

16 Sammy Hagar - Red
17 Sammy Hagar - There's Only One Way To Rock

David Lee Roth Pick

Continuing after yesterday's pick is a special one for Diamond Dave. David Lee Roth, no matter what anyone can possibly say, was a front man extraordinaire. This Roth pick combines the best of Dave with Van Halen, plus some moments from his solo career. You will notice that two of the songs are on both of these picks. And it's just because the songs are so good, they show off David Lee Roth as well as Eddie Van Halen's guitar prowress. Unfortunately for Diamond Dave, Eddie found another front man who we will show off tomorrow. Roth had some big hits on his own and some stinkers, this is my pick of those, with the Van Halen tracks that he shined on, too.

20 David Lee Roth - Tobacco Road
21 David Lee Roth - Knucklebones

Eddie Van Halen Pick

This is my pick of Eddie Van Halen guitar bests. These are what I think are notable moments of Eddie. Pretty much the bulk of it are Van Halen songs with the one Michael Jackson song. Originally he was uncredited (for awhile it said guitar solo by Frankenstein) but eventually everyone knew. In reality all it took was a listen and you knew it was Eddie. What's interesting is that no matter what direction the band took, you could always hear Eddie. Over the next couple of days, you'll get to hear some of those directions. In the meantime enjoy the best of Eddie. I saw them several times over the years. They were always great.

Eddie Van Halen Pick

What's The Connection? Don't Bring Me...

I have some related connections. One was Don't Let and the other was Don't Down Me. This one is Don't Bring Me. I guess don't is popular with songwriters. Many of these songs are Don't Bring Me Down. They are not all Electric Light Orchestra covers. I do love that song though. Flowers, Candy and Memories are the rest and only one asks nicely and that's Johnny Kidd & The Pirates which is interesting since it is almost Talk Like A Pirate Day. So you will soon be seeing Pirate songs coming your way. In a couple of days? Perhaps. In the meantime let it be known, I do like flowers. Especially exotic tropical flowers, but also just a vase of tulips are nice. So you can always bring or send me flowers. No reason is needed. Even in the comments is nice.

Rock & Marriage Pick

This is one that I know I am missing someone. The idea was to take bands that had a married couple in the band and pick songs during the time they were married (that didn't quite work out). Mariage is hard work without also working together. And it shows. Only a few of these married couple stayed married. And many kept working after getting divorced. So if it was possible I picked a song that was during the marriage portion. I did not pick bands with long term romantic couples, so Blondie was out. Early White Stripes was in. Look up each band to see who the married couple was, if you don't know. Like for Fleetwood Mac, Stevie and Lindsey didn't count, but the McVie's did. Jefferson Starship had Grace Slick who purportedly dated everyone in the band at one time or another (it was free love San Francisco after all) but at one point or another Paul Kantner ended up marrying her. Stories like that are all over this pick.

21 Sonic Youth - Kool Thing

What's The Connection? Just Like...

Lots of songs with Just Like in the title. So this should be volume one, but I never made or even started volume two. No idea why. But it obviously hasn't bothered me (until maybe now) since I made this connection some time ago. No special reason why. I do really like a few of these songs quite a bit, so maybe that was the reason. Lennon and Ono, Chris and Cosey, Jesus and Mary Chain, Ray Parker Jr & Raydio are all favorites. But I also like the Cure and Paul Revere a lot too.  I usually start a connection with a song and I copy it to a folder and when I think of another I add it to that folder until I have enough songs. Sometimes that takes a long period of time, sometimes I think of so many at once that I can make multiple volumes at once. Then I have to come up with my idea of what the artwork should look like. Then I start fixing volumes, checking keys, BPM, etc. And then I put it into an order that I think might work. I listen to it and adjust until I am happy and Just Like that I have a compilation.

What's The Connection? Blow Up 1

First let me acknowledge that this is in bad taste in multiple ways. First I made a connection of songs about Blow Up Dolls. Second, I left Dolls off the title (I didn't add bomb, though). And third I am posting this up on September 11th at 9:11 AM. I get it. It's all pretty bad as a joke. In bad taste in every way. I agree with you. Now that we got that out of the way. Are you surprised there are so many songs about inflatable dolls? I sure was. I mean I knew about the Police song and the Roxy Music song and, of course, Frank Zappa. But there are so many. And some I had no idea were about that until I started looking in to it. I mean, Neil Diamond? C'mon, man! No Joke. There's a lot of them. I probably have enough in reserve to start a volume two. Not quite, but close. Leave me any ones, I might have missed in the comments. Skip Richard Thompson, Dinosaur Jr and Lucky & Easy. I have those in reserve plus Steve Holy and the Frogs.

Bill Nelson Pick

This compilation is kind of fun for me. But also very difficult. Getting a Pick on Bill Nelson will always feel incomplete. He has so many albums, So right away, it's impossible to narrow it to a CD's length. But that was the goal. My favorites may not be anywhere near someone else's favorites. In fact, probably not at all. It's not like Nelson had a lot of "hits" just fan favorites. I did include a couple of tracks where he played guitar on tracks I really liked from other artists. Monsoon with Sheila Chandra doing an amazing cover. And Cabaret Voltaire with a track from CODE that I really liked and was pleasantly surprised that it was one of the tracks on the album that Nelson played guitar on. I won't really get into genres here, but I kept the rock, the art rock, the new wave etc and tried to stay a little away from the ambient. He's got a lot of ambient. I hope you like what I picked.

What's The Connection? Atomic 1

These are all songs with Atomic in the title. And even though I love the Blondie song, it was actually not the reason I made this Connection. Nor was it Van Halen (although that song rocks, too). It was all because of Bill Nelson. I know. You thought it was Lydia Lunch. And it is a favorite of mine. But she hates it. I still do not understand why. I love that album of hers. And not just because of the cover. Although it helps. Yes, she's made stronger albums, but I just like the flavor of that one. She doesn't. Oh Well. I also like the Blow Monekys. At one point on the radio I would always play a Blow Monkeys song and just really emphasis their name on every show. Not because they were my favorite band by any stretch of imagination. I just liked saying The Bloooow Monkeys. Anyways enjoy the playlist and the cover.

It's About Time

This is sort of a connection, but  not my typical one. I should probably make this into a full WTC, but I haven't yet. These are all tracks that I played at a Time Management seminar that we used to do. Teaching people how to manage time and be more efficient with time. It was a good seminar or workshop, but we ended up going in a different direction and so only do the complimentary seminar the Goals one that got bigger and bigger and also more popular. So, mostly songs about Time. I also could have taken out the efx that I used during the event, but left it in so you could see the original CD as it was. I hope you like it. I wish we did this still, because it was a good one.

What's The Connection? Plastic 1

This connection is about the future. And the future is plastics. Lol. I love the line from the Graduate. We kind of don't like plastic anymore, but it is everywhere no matter what. And besides, my favorite comic book character is Plasticman. If you are a fan, you'll notice that he has become the cover of this compilation. Some important songs in this connection (for me). First I included the most Plastic song of all by the Plastics. Second, I included the band the Elektrics who have a very important song Pretty Plastic which has lyrics that I used to name my mannequin. I wonder if you can figure out what I named her. All my secrets on this WTC (OMG, also my pin number. Ouch!)

What's The Connection? Hoochie 1

You'd probably be surprised which song started my quest for this Hoochie connection. You might think it was Rick Derringer and you'd be close. That was the first song I thought of after I started the search of my collection, but actually it was the outlier of this comp, Ohio Players. I have probably listened to that song, looked at the title on the albums it's on (after looking at the covers over and over again) and never realized that it was a hoochie song. When I did, I was surprised and now I can never unsee it. I knew I had to make this connection so the one other person who had never noticed it before, also noticed it. Is that you? Or am I really the only guy who never saw what was right in front of my face? It's like the Heatwave song that I sang over and over again, thinking I was singing Japanese, when no, it was English all the time. I just didn't hear the lyrics properly. Doh! Have you ever just misheard the lyrics so bad?

September doesn't have any real holidays, but it is a time when people go on last minute Holiday before kids go to school. Mostly people are coming back from vacation around this time. What's The Connection? In A Gadda Da Vida 2

Okay I couldn't help it, I had to add part 2 of this connection. In The Garden Of Eden or when you are drunk it sounds like In A Gadda Da Vida. That's the story anyway. It starts with a drunk guy, a cool melody and drunken lyrics about the Garden Of Eden. But they were smart enough to keep the drunken version which made it into a classic for Iron Butterfly. I included the Mojo Nixon version I mentioned yesterday. I also included yet another Iron Butterfly version. This time the edited version from the Manhunter soundtrack. It's the eight minute version. Kind of in between the album version and the single version. Also probably the shortest version of the song by Roommate From Hell. And the famous version by the Incredible Bongo Band.

What's The Connection? In A Gadda Da Vida 1

This connection could be volumes long and probably still not have that many tracks. These 13 picks are mostly not that long but the original album version and the live version are pretty long. I put both versions as well as the single version onto this WTC. Each has it's merits. A few nice covers fill it out. This song is an example of a rock song that influenced everyone after it. Heavy metal came from here. Worth it just for the drum solo and very interesting how these other bands. Let me know if you have a favorite version of this song that I didn't put in. Like I didn't add Mojo Nixon's version (and it's good.) Comment with a few and maybe I will do part 2.

Yardbirds Pick

The Yardbirds are an interesting band. Both historically and musically they were amazing. Not just their own output wich was great, but also what they led to. The elephant in the room: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were all in this band as lead guitarist. There are rumours of there being one song that all three of them played on at the same time, but it can't be substantiated. The most I can find is two playing at the same time on the same record. A couple of those songs are on this pick. For sure track 4 and track 5 included Beck and Page on dual guitar. Clapton left and became Cream. Beck left and became the Jeff Back Group. Page left and became Led Zeppelin. Less known is that Relf and McCarty started Rennaisance (for one album). Dreja didn't really show up again as a musician until Box Of Frogs (Yardbirds spin off). Relf also was in Armageddon. McCarty and Relf also started Illusion, but Relf died before recording. Mostly similar lineup to first Rennaisance band.

What's The Connection? Holdin'

Songs with Holdin' or Holding in the title. You will notice that even though the WTC from a few days ago (Hold) had a few Holdin songs in it, none of them are repeated here. So for the biggest bang, add those songs here to get something a little more complete. Several big hits here and a few not as well known, but all good tracks. Listen to it while you notive that they are in BPM order. Also by now you have figured out that the covers are very similar. I wanted them to look the same, holding out for a way to tie them together.. I crack myself up (too easily it seems).
