Faux Punk

This Pick is about Fake Punk or Faux Punk. Both bands and songs. So we have fake punk band and fake punk songs. To me if you have the word Punk in your title, it's probably not a punk song. It's Faux Punk. There's quite a few songs, that were good songs, that just weren't punk that follow that rule. Just listen to Van Halen. By no stretch of the imagination are they punk. But Iggy Pop was a punk, but the song he did with Teddybears. I'm sorry not punk. The Meatmen have a great track on here and it's almost punk, they're pretty punk, but almost is not good enough. Side note: I had some faux punk pants (ripped jeans) that were signed by the Clitboys. And if you know the Meatmen song, you'll get it. The Dead Milkmen were sometimes punk, Bitchin' Camaro probably counts, but this track is so not punk. Find the fake punk bands. There are a few. They aren't even real bands. See Fake Bands for more of that kind of stuff. Anyway, enjoy the fakeness.

What's The Connection? You Feel 1

Ok, one more in the Feel connection series. This one is You Feel. You could probably do a complete WTC with just covers of the Righteous Brothers. I had close to enough and I was barely looking. But that will have to be later. I included their version plus a special version. I added the G-Clefs (who you'll also find in a New Years Eve connection since it's obviously has a little Auld Lang Syne in it). Plus some fairly older tracks mixed with newer ones. It's amazing the things you feel when you let it. I am tired of looking at basically the same cover, so I will take a break for real this time on the Feel comps.

What's The Connection? Make You Feel 1

I'm not sure how many more of these Feel Connections I'm going to post in a row, but it kind of feels like I want to take a break. Yea I crack myself up with stupid stuff like that all day. This one is Make You Feel in the title. There are probably enough Sylvester covers to do one just on his song, but I tried to spread it around.. There are three of these that got this one going. Red Hot Chili Peppers. I've been a fan since the early days. Somewhere on this site are some stories of early concerts. Michael Jackson and War. For some reason I must be the only person who has all of War's albums. They are good, even if they didn't all have hits on them. Or maybe because they didn't. There's no Tower of Power on this compilation, but they are another one, like War who have really good albums even if there are no hits on the albums. And I don't need to explain Michael. We grew up together. Him rich and me, not at all.

What's The Connection? Can You Feel 1

Another one of the Feel series of connections (check the past couple of days if you missed any). This one has all Can You Feel in the title. The most obvious one being Elton John from the Disney film. Probably the last one they did that was great. Also going back to around that time The Capitol Steps doing their comedy political version. They had some funny tracks. Not sure what they are doing now. No one is in the mood for political humor, I guess. Kenny G doing his version of the same song, too. But some good tracks from Dub to House and much more. I hope you can feel it.

16 King Tubby - Dub You Can Feel

What's The Connection? Do You Feel 1

Continuing the Feel What's The Connection is Do You Feel. Yesterday was Feel You. These all have Do You Feel in the title. Had to do it, because of Peter Frampton. I included the single (shorter) version of the song, so I could fit in a few extra tracks, but by all means go listen to the longer version. It's probably better. Another wide variety when you do it by title. I included country, pop, disco, rock etc. A couple of the tracks have all the words but not exactly right after each other. Still in the same order, but other words inserted. Example is Jimmie Rodgers Snow or the Deniece Williams. But they were good songs and I wanted them included. I still have a few leftovers, so perhaps there will be a volume two, but I need to get some more to fill it out (maybe I will with the longer Peter Frampton.) See the similar cover.

Probably more like just Feel, bcause there are there is an I feel and your feelings and you feel. Don't want to be too strict about this one. I have more. Anyway I feel you will like this one. What's The Connection? Yearn

This is one of those connections where I thought I only knew one song that had the word in the title. The only one I thought I knew (the one I did know) was the Earth, Wind & Fire. I knew several versions of the song. One of my favorite albums of all time (Gratitude) has live version. I started looking through my albums to see if there were any other songs and sure enough several that I just plain forgot showed up. I was originally thinking I would do Learn WTC (and I probably will eventually), but this worked out. More than a few country songs, some disco, some R&B, some jazz and even some punk in here. More of a Yearning than a plain old yearn, but you get the idea. I'm yearning for more of these.

What's The Connection? Thanks

This actually was not started for Thanksgiving, but it works great for it. I used this connection as a Thank You for all sorts of events. Anytime I wanted to say thank you, instead of a card I sent this CD as a gift. The cover has multiple thanks on it from me. My handwriting. You are welcome to use it as you wish. As you can probably tell I made this some long time ago. Thank you for coming by this site and telling your firends about it, but especially thanks for those of you who comment on it. I hope you all enjoy the way I see the music put together and support the musicians by going to their shows, buying their t-shirts and other merch. It's a great Thank You to them. Feel Like It

It's been awhile since I made a completely brand new mixtape. Except nowadays I call it a Pick. or a compilation playlist, since no one listens to CD's or tapes anymore. I called it Feel Like It, because I just felt like making one. I had come across Jason Mraz' song and I liked it. But even more, I knew I could easily mix from it intosongs from Dnce and Cake and even Justin Timberlake. I didn't need to go very far to grab some songs in the same key and close BPM's to come up with this one. Some new, some older but all in key matching order. Building up and winding down like a good set would do. I played it at a gig and was happy to see that it went over well. Even the theme is intertwined. Here you go!

What's The Connection? Treat Her 1

This is another Treat connection. Treat Her to be exact. Some of these are repeats of the same couple of songs, just different covers. Deal with it. I don't have much to say about this one, because as I was making the Treat connections, this just came up, so I went with it. I do have a few more to start a volume 2, but I'm just not quite there. So help out if you have suggestions. I'll use them. Very similar covers as the others in the series. Although none of these songs are about treating a dog, I still am using the dog paws.

What's The Connection? Zoom 2

Part two of the zoom connection which is also slightly related to the Working at Home pick from several days ago. Eighteen more zoom tracks a few that you know are my favorite artists. Brian Eno, Bill Nelson, and Lionel Richie. Plus a couple of oldies, some eighties bands and some that sound like the 80's but are much newer. Basically it's all over the map and none of it has to do with making calls from home. Oh well. You probably noticed that I put Aretha in again, but this time the 12" version. Similar cover art.

What's The Connection? Zoom 2

33 Aretha Franklin - Who's Zoomin' Who (12'' Version)

What's The Connection? Zoom 1

Sort of associated with yesterday's pick of Working From Home. It's the first thing most people had to do when they were stuck working from home and that's setup a Zoom call. We zoomed our places of work, our clients, even our kids' school. They had zoom for lessons, not because it helped, but to justify getting paid. But I am cynical. I'm pretty sure none of these songs have anything to do with zoom calls, but great songs for this connection anyway. Commodores have an amazing song that I have always like better than Easy. Several rap or hip hop tracks are zoomin'And the amazing Aretha Franklin who has the only song on all three of these. From yesterday to today and to tomorrow (although a different version tomorrow.) Blondie, Tom Tom Club and Budgie are probably the ones I listen to the most. I put the full version of The Temptations with the whole "conversation" intro. I wonder how many songs have that in the beginning?

What's The Connection? Zoom 1

01 Commodores - Zoom
02 Dr. Dre with LL Cool J - Zoom

Workin From Home Pick

This could be a Connection, but I made it a Pick. There are a couple of songs that are just about the vibe of workin from home, but aren't really. In the middle of the pandemic and people were sent home to work, except for the essential people I started thinking what it was like for people who had never worked from home before. I picked a bunch of songs that had work and home in the title and then added some work songs that I hadn't added to my last Work connection. Then I added what everyone started doing: Zooming. I had enough Zoom songs to make it's own Connection or two. So look for that soon. I picked one of those tracks to add here. But added two more songs (the last two) that really spoke to me about the attitude people need to work from home. Especially if you work for yourself but also for anyone else. I hope you like it. Please give me feedback on this one and suggestions for finishing the next Work WTC that I am not finished with.

What's The Connection? Treat 1

A few days ago you had Treat Me as a connection, today's What's The Connection is Treat. Just by itself. Not Treat Me or Treat Her. Treat You and Treatment and Treating. So kind of the starting off point or the leftovers. But this is where it started. Rice A Roni. Well, the commercial and Graham Parker. Then it was just looking for how many others I had. Too many so I broke off Treat Her and Treat Me. And that's the story. Same kind of cover.

What's The Connection? Work It 2

This is the second Connection for Work It. Really it's for anything plus an It. So Do It, Work It, Shake It, Drop It all that similar to the first one I did. But This one was used for work outs. I don't know how that makes it any different in reality, but I always classified this as a Work It Work Out Class. I made a few work out class compilations and this one was different than most of them, because I usually had a quieter stretch section to warm up and then another at the end. This one doesn't have that so I was probably still working it out. Either way this is what I have. Compare it to the other Work It and see if there are any differences. The covers are very similar.

What's The Connection? Work It 2

Three Men In A Tub 1

This pick may be really crappy for anyone that loves Dub Step. I don't know. I just know that when I made it I was trying to impress my daughter about knowing new music and this genre popped up. I know nothing about it. I listened to a few tracks that she had. It sounded very different from the Dub Reggae that I do know something about. But I am arrogant enough to think I can figure out what I like and it's probably going to be something everyone likes. One day ask me to tell you the Guns N Roses story to prove how dumb I am at that. So I put this pick together. I knew of Skrillex before I started. And I knew about Ctrl Z - just nothing dub step by them. Only house tracks, which I liked. I listened to a bunch of tracks and came up with about thirty I really liked (someday I will finish volume two). I picked my favorites from them. So this could suck if you like Dub Step or maybe, by accident, I picked a good set. I like it. Let me know how I did in the comments and give me some pointers on who else to listen to.

What's The Connection? Treat Me 1

This is the first of a few Connections I made. Perhaps I should have started with the Treat connection, but maybe I am secretly very vain and everything is about me. So here it is Treat Me. The thing that's funny is that I made the cover based on treating a dog, but none of these songs are anywhere close to treats for a dog or even treats (as in candy or trick or treat.) But I have trained dogs and treats do work for most of them. The key is knowing what kind of treat. Some will do anything for some string cheese and others don't care about anything but the treat of getting praise from their best friend. I've had both. One dog only loved playing with other dogs. She was horrible at Fly Ball. She crossed lanes all the time to play with her opponent. Distracting the other dog and never getting the ball. We eventually found better things for her. One dog loved tennis balls more than anything. Much easier to get that dog to compete. By the time you read all these writeups, you'll probably know more about me than you expect. I've already (on this site) given you my password to my bank account.

What's The Connection? Wrong 1

This connection is all the wrong songs. Can't say it better than that. There are a lot of wrong songs and these are some of my favorites. They are wrong in just the right way. I could probably make another couple of compilations of wrong songs, but leave your favorite suggestions in the comments anyway. I like that both Depeche Mode and The Cure have wrong songs as well as Heatwave and Earth, Wind & Fire. Good twofers. I'm not sure, but I think the Buzzcocks have the best wrong song for me. Or maybe BJ Thomas...

What's The Connection? Wiggle Wobble 1

This one started several years ago and I was doing a wedding for some dancers. They both taught ballroom dance and I was expecting a bunch of traditional ballroom dance songs, but I was lucky they loved all the latest music as well. One of the songs was brand new at the time. It was Wobble, or Wiggle or they weren't sure. I said no problem I have a bunch of wobble and wiggle songs, I'm sure it is one of those. I played a them some of the ones I knew were hits, but it turned out to be the (unknown at the time) V.I.C. (which I had but it wasn't a hit yet).  Who knew? So all those choices and a few more are in this connection. Since that wedding, I have collected a few more, probably close to making a volume two, so if you have any suggestions on what I'm missing, add it in the comments, please.

B-52's Pick 3

You could call this the B-52's Family Pick, because there isn't a single B-52's track on it. But several tracks with the whole (or most) of the band guesting. A few solo tracks. Kate has little solo, Cindy has a couple of EP's and an album, Fred has two albums. Keith has none and Ricky only guested on one track (Tom Verlaine) by himself before he died. I have some of all that. Most everyone has heard them guest on REM and Iggy Pop. The Ramones track was issued as a bonus track and has the girls (with Debbie Harry) on it. The Spirit of The Forest has the bulk of the band and is a one off charity record with a bunch of stars. The Martini Ranch track was on some of my original comps. Melon is a Japanese band with members of Plastics and more with the B-52's. I really like the track. Some of this really sounds like them and some it's hard to tell (until a voice comes in.) I have enough for a volume four, but I am not yet happy with it. So it may come out later.

B-52's Pick 3

38 Fred Schneider - Coconut
39 Bongwater With Fred Schneider - The Power Of Pussy
40 Cindy Wilson & Kate Pierson - Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now

56 Miranda Lambert with The B-52's - Music City Queen
57 The Ramones Featuring Wilson, Pierson, Harry - Chop Suey

B-52's Pick 2

This is the continuation of the B-52's pick. It's go the tracks I wanted to add in volume one, but ran out of room, plus a couple of tracks from the live action movie The Flintstones, which kinda sucked, but had a couple of tracks originally attributed to the Bc-52's that were much better than the movie. The title track was later released on a CD single.  One track that is Pokemon related. A few tracks from Funplex and Good Stuff that I started to get into later and a couple of singles. Less of the "hits" on here, but all great songs. When I first made volume two it included some of the family tracks, but I have now moved that over to volume 3 of this pick.

B-52's Pick 2

20 The B-52's - 6060-842

36 The B-52's - Song For A Future Generation
37 The B-52's - Moon 83

B-52's Pick 1

The B-52's are a band I like a lot. But they are a bad luck band for me. I have had tickets to go see them multiple times and for one reason or another I have never seen them play live. I made it in to the stadium twice and had to leave for one reason or another. Been in hospitals, stuck on the road, broken car, missed a flight. For some reason God does not want me to see this band. But I love them! I have made multiple picks over the years. On cassette, on CD and I have redone it multiple times. As new albums came out or new appearances on songs showed up, I made a new version. I just redid it again. The main part stays pretty much the same each time. I did add Funplex on volume one this time and I pulled all the Family picks and put them all in volume 3 (and now 4.) So enjoy the band. This is the best I ever get to hear them.

Visage Family Pick

Yesterday saw some of the crossover of this pick. In fact some of the players are the same. But many new. Like Steve Strange, Gary Barnacle, John McGeoch, Rusty Egan, Barry Adamson and Dave Formula. They all crossover in some way or another though. Slik and Rich Kids are still the base. And Ultravox and Midge Ure come in, but now we branch off to different phase of Magazine and get to touch on PiL. Formula and McGeoch were in Magazine, with the latter moving to Siouxsie. Strange had a solo album. McGeoch was also in Armoury Show and appeared with Peter Murphy and the Sugarcubes. Some overlap with yesterday's pick, but mostly new. I included a different mix for the Visage and Ultravox tracks, but Slik, Billy Currie, Midge Ure and Rich Kids have the same track.

Visage Family Pick

17 Ultravox - Dancing With Tears In My Eyes (Extended Version)
18 Siouxsie & the Banshees - Spellbound

Ultravox Family Pick

To my eyes and ears, there were two Ultravox's. One was Ultravox! and the other dropped the exclamation point. Both were really good in different ways. We cover the family of both incarnations in this pick. The first Ultravox! was John Foxx with Billy Curie, John Cross, Warren Cann, Stevie Shears. The second Ultravox dropped John Foxx and gained Midge Ure. Others cycled in and out, but those two leads and Billy (and Warren) made up the band for decades. They came from Slik and The Rich Kids and we have a track from each. A track from John Foxx solo. Billy was also in Visage, and played with Gary Numan (among others) and had  solo tracks. Midge Ure was probably most famous for Band Aid, but also had great solo hits (look for a Midge Ure pick later). Several of Ultravox members over the years also played with Magazine, hence their track. Visage has several crossovers and we'll get in to more detail tomorrow.

15 Ultravox - Dancing With Tears In My Eyes
16 Ultravox - Vienna
17 Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas

Phil Lynott Pick

Yesterday I posted a pick about Gary Moore and today it is Phil Lynott. Both played together in and out of Thin Lizzy, so it makes some sense. There is some overlap because of it, but just ignore that. It's not much, but tracks that had to be on both. There is much more that is different. Even the Thin Lizzy songs are completely different. If you want to look up the background of each, it's all available and it's interesting to read about. All I want to say is that Phil Lynott is under appreciated and under recognized for his role in rock history. And he's got a ton of really great songs that he left behind. I included a track that isn't as well known in the US as it is in the UK and that is a track that Lynott wrote with Midge Ure: Yellow Pearl. It will probably show up soon in a Midge Ure associated pick coming up (tomorrow?)  That track was used as a theme for some show we don't have here in the States. Anyway, enjoy the selection.

Phil Lynott Pick

01 Phil Lynott - Nineteen (Extended Version)

11 Skid Row - New Faces Old Places
12 Phil Lynott - Dear Miss Lonely Hearts
13 Phil Lynott - Yellow Pearl (First Version)
14 Phil Lynott - King's Call
15 Thin Lizzy - Don't Believe A Word
16 Phil Lynott - Ode To A Black Man
17 Thin Lizzy - Dancing In The Moonlight (It's Caught Me In Its Spotlight)
18 Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
19 Thin Lizzy - The Boys Are Back In Town

Gary Moore Pick

This pick of Gary Moore includes several of his solo songs including his biggest hit. It also includes songs from the two Thin Lizzy albums he was on, his first band the Irish Skid Row (not to be confused with the hair metal US band). It also includes a track from G-Force (not Kenny G, but the band he formed), Scars (now sometimes referred as Gary Moore Scars) and also super group BBM. Not to mention his stint in Colosseum II, To round it out are a couple of his guest spots in some bands and even his appearance on Ferry Aid. He was known as a blues guy, but he rocked everywhere. His guitar playing was amazing (track 8 should prove that to you). I always had heard about him and Phil Lynott who he played with in several of these incarnations including of course Thin Lizzy, but he played all over. Hard to get just one track from each band.

Gary Moore Pick

01 Thin Lizzy - Still In Love With You
02 Gary Moore & Phil Lynott - Out In The Fields
03 Gary Moore - Empty Rooms
04 G-Force - White Knuckles-Rockin' And Rollin'
05 BBM - Waiting In The Wings
06 Scars (Gary Moore) - When The Sun Goes Down
07 Rod Argent - Home
08 Gary Moore - Parisienne Walkways

15 Beach Boys - Maybe I Don't Know
16 Ferry Aid - Let It Be
17 Thin Lizzy - Waiting For An Alibi

Blues 4

More of the Blues pick with a wide variety of tracks. Some actual traditional blues artists such as Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Little Walter mixed in with more modern guys like Gary Moore, Kenny Wayne Shepard and Rory Gallagher. And some rock bands doing bluesy songs. James Brown and even Weird Al Yankovic with a really great blues track that BB King said he loved. More will come but probably much later, So enjoy the first four volumes. Play them for friends who love rock, but don't really know the blues yet.

69 Rolling Stones - Love In Vain

Blues 3

This is part three of my Blues Pick. Listen to the first couple of volumes of blues here. Designed to be more Rock and Roll than "real" blues it turned out to be pretty bluesy. The bottom line is that each of these volumes does get people that love rock to accept the blues in rock. And there's a lot of it. Some great tracks here starting with the last one by Howlin' Wolf. That's the real stuff, But hard to say that Black Sabbath didn't nail it. Or Boz Scaggs from his first album. The Stones and Zeppelin did quite a few blues tracks, but who thinks of the Kinks or Deep Purple as blues bands? When you listen to these tracks, you will.

Blues 3

01 Kinks - A Gallon Of Gas
02 Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
03 Rolling Stones - Down In The Hole
04 Budgie - Zoom Club
05 AC-DC - Ride On

09 Boz Scaggs - Loan Me A Dime
10 Black Sabbath - Warning
11 Howlin' Wolf - Smokestack Lightnin'

Vote (Repost)

This is my pick of songs about voting, elections, politics and making choices and although a couple are about specific candidates, I don't think it matters much since, Zappa, Walsh and Chicago are not in the running anymore. All I can say is every year go out and vote. Even if you believe your vote doesn't matter, vote. It does matter. Get that sticker and wear it proudly (if you are in the USA) and if you are anywhere else in the world that allows fair and secure voting, go to the polls, show your ID and vote for whoever you want. Do it.

What's The Connection? Sick Fever 1

While we are on the subject of being sick, the biggest, most common symptom is a fever. This connection has being on fire and fever in the title. There are tons of these kids of songs, so there will be another volume, I'm sure. One of my favorites is the novelty song by Buckner & Garcia. Pretty funny and also a decent song. A few of these songs don't really have anything to do with being sick, but what the hell. Enjoy them anyway. I won't make you sing Soft Kitty.
