I posted a couple of halloween picks over the years that I called Spooky, but kept some just for myself . Today and today only here are up to date links for the other two Spooky posts that I haven't made yet, but are here for you get now. No track list here, But Spooky 3 is all about crows and scarecrows and Spooky 4 is the more teenager and adult Halloween music. The first track plays from the rock speakers in my front yard after the little kids have already come by. Scariest thing ever: Diamanda Galas but remixed with efx. Someday I will really post them, but today just the links.
Favorite Connections and favorite compilations are shown in their playlist order along with covers that I designed for each. BTW, if you are asked to pay for anything to get to any part of this site, then let me know. Nothing here is asking for money, if it is, then it's wrong and I will fix it. Please leave comments, it's the only way for me to know someone's been here. Thank you.
Top Pick Albums 1987
First, Happy Halloween! But just because it's a holiday doesn't mean you aren't going to get my top pick of albums on the last Friday of the month (whether you want it or not). Like usual this pick has the top ten albums of the year and by top ten, I mean the ones, I picked back then. The rules were simple for me. I had to own the album (and most were CD's by 1987) and I had to have played the heck out of it. These all follow that. Not sure if they all would still be top albums for me now. For sure there are tracks I still listen to, but who knows. What were some of your favorites in 1987? The sample cover I used is from Satriani. The Silver Surfer is too cool. But all of them are included.

Top Pick 1987
It's the last Thursday and Friday of the month so, here's my top pick of songs from the year 1987. Tomorrow it will be the top albums, but today it is the top singles. And I don't use whether or not it was released as a single as a criteria just any song I liked enough. And there were plenty this year. A couple of Bay Area bands are on here. I really liked the Endmen. But also a couple of big name international hits. For some reason, I listened to the Throbbing Gristle track a lot this year. In other countries it may have been released in a different year, but for me this was the time. When I found out it was based on a real event, that just made it all the worse/better. It's a long song, but worthit. Lots of variety on here. Negativland from Concord, California was so good live, but their recordings were good too. The covers on here were also definitely good.

What's The Connection? Monsters 1
It's close enough to Halloween to post this connection of Monster songs and since it is the last Thursday and Friday of the month the next two days, I will be posting my Top Picks of the year (some year in the 80's) the next two days. So Halloween a little bit early this year. It was fun making this pick of songs. I made sure not use Monster Mash, since you will probably get that on every Halloween playlist every year, but I did use David Bowie and Fred Schneider so I do feel a little bit cheap. You'll have fun with this playlist either way, though. Nothing too scary, excpet for maybe the Gengar on the cover. A ghost pocket monster.

What's The Connection? Shake Your 1
I have posted quite a few of the WTC's with Shake as the title theme. This offshoot is Shake Your... There, obviously, are quite lot of your things you can shake and this covers many of them. A few doubles/covers, but I tried to separate them in one way or the other. I have a feeling that a lot of these are metaphors for your butt and some are just saying it. So try to shake your whatever you think it is as you listen. Tell me how you did. The cover is an offshoot of all the Shakes.

Wall Of Sound 1
All over the internet there are lists of songs that use Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound production technique. This pick is me cherry picking a few of them. It is by no means a comprehensive look at Phil Spector's work although there are a few of the songs he did produce on this compilation. And there are hundreds of songs that he didn't produce that were inspired by his techniques. This doesn't even dent all of those. It's just my easy pick of the ones that jumped out at me at first glance and that I liked. In the comments tell me what are your favorite songs that Phil Spector produced or were inspired by his Wall Of Sound that aren't on this pick.

What's The Connection? Moles
This connection is a playlist of songs about moles. The animal. Not the spot on your skin. Although I suppose it could include both. I have no idea how it came into my head to do this one. The Residents mole show and The Dukes Of Stratosphear were the only ones that initially came to mind, although more did after I really thought about it. I put some of the ones in my collection. The Dickies and B Movie were the two I was embarrased that I didn't think of right away. Some of the others not so much.

Philip Bailey Pick 2
More of the Philip Bailey pick. This is volume 2 and it has several Earth Wind & Fire tracks on it. Yesterday there was only one. A couple of guest spots, solo tracks, including his arguably most famous song with Phil Collins (an extended remix). Also my favorite version of my favorite EWF Philip Bailey songs live. One of the EWF tracks is the original version of the song he did solo yesterday as a more jazzy song. Compare the two. A couple of tracks on one of the previous comps, including the Little Richard duet from the great Devito/Schwarzenegger movie Twins. Which volume do you like best?
Philip Bailey Pick 2

30 Deniece Williams & Philip Bailey - They Say
Philip Bailey Pick 1
I've been down a similar rabbit hole with Maurice White and Don Myrick and Skip Scarborough all from Earth Wind & Fire. I have a fun compilation called On The Side with a couple of the tracks on either volume one or volume two of this pick, but mostly this is more stuff or different versions. Every one of the compilations above has something doubled here, But also a bunch of new ones. Bailey sings lead or back up on most all of these songs and on a couple he plays percussion of some sort as well. I actually had no idea until I started this playlist that he sang on the Stevie Wonder track. Obvious once you know. Same with the T-Connection (who were on TK Records). Some of his worship songs are also here, mixed with the others.
Philip Bailey Pick 1
01 Kenny Loggins - At Last
02 Stevie Wonder - Part-Time Lover
03 Earth, Wind & Fire - Fantasy

15 Philip Bailey - Shower Me With Your Love
16 Philip Bailey - Keep Your Head To The Sky
Bill Champlin Pick
This pick is of Bill Champlin. I include a few tracks from Chicago where he was from a couple of years after Terry Kath died until 2009 (he mostly sang Kath's parts while in concert). He had another track where he was also lead singer, but I didn't include that one (even though it's good). There's one track from Sons Of Champlin an earlier band he was in. Several solo tracks including some Yacht Rock favorites, plus a couple of guest spots that he sang on. A few Jazz (or Jazz adjacent) tracks which fit his vocal chops well. Nothing to offend anyone on this pick.

16 Harvey Mason - Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
17 Bill Champlin - Gotta Get Back To Love
18 Chicago - Hard Habit To Break
Maurice White Pick
This pick from Earth Wind & Fire founder Maurice White was fun. It matches, but only has a couple of duplicates with the On The Side compilation playlist which featured songs that had any member of EWF, this one concentrates only on Maurice White. I also have one with just Don Myrick appearances - same link above. So a couple of Maurice's solo tracks appear on the former, but most of the rest is just on here. Check out the other ones, though, for some cool tracks. I tried to pick albums he played on and not just produced, because he did produce quite a few artists as well. Every one of these tracks has him singing (at least backup) or playing the kalimba or the drums or a combination. I did not include his soundtrack with Bill Meyers, but did include a track from the solo album of Meyers with Maurice (and Philip Bailey) singing on it.
Maurice White Pick
01 Preston Glass with Maurice White - Breakin' In A Brand New Heart

Pale Sparkly
This Pale Sparkly pick came about because I was watching some highlights of an award show while listening to some old disco tracks. So I combined the ones I liked (dnace and rock and country) with a couple of those disco tracks and put them in BPM order to give it some semblance of cohesion. I have Malone, Munich Machine, Manufacture, Moroney and McRae all in here and end with a "Backup Plan" I'm pretty sure most of these were or are hits of some sort or another, but if not, oh well.

17 Rose with Bruno Mars - Apt
18 Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars - Die With A Smile

Fee Waybill Pick
After yesterday's PPP, it's not that surprising to see that today it's Fee Waybill that is picked. Fee Waybill was the lead singer of the Tubes and also had a bunch of solo work. He sang on quite a few tribute albums. His covers of ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Thin Lizzy, Beatles and Van Halen are all pretty good. Most of which I included here on this compilation. He had several tracks that appeared on soundtracks and he had three solo albums, There's a sampling of those here and also several tracks from The Tubes. I made sure to include their track from Xanadu with Olivia Newton-John even though it is not one of their best tracks. The cover includes Fee as Quay Lude.

Prairie Prince Pick
It was too easy to call it the Prairie Prince Pick, because of the illiteration, but it could have been Guest Pick or Family Pick just as easily. That doesn't run off the tongue as well, however. The Pririe Prince was mostly known for his work with The Tubes, but he was also a founding member of Journey (but didn't record on any of their albums) was in Jefferson Starship and played on several Todd Rundgren albums. He was in the New Cars and also was a studio musician playing with a bunch of bands. Some of them are on this pick. My favorites outside of those above are the Eno and the Zappa Early Renaissance Orchestra tracks. Tell me which ones you like best.

01 Zappa Early Renaissance Orchestra (featuring Craig Steward, Prairie Prince & Sandro Oliva) - Montana Revisited

Sweetest Day
The third Saturday of October is Sweetest Day. Don't confuse it with Valentines Day, because although we might give candies or pastries to our loved ones, it's more about doing something kind for someone else. A stranger, perhaps. For me this date is also the day my daughter was born and that was a real sweet thing for me. This connection is my pick of the sweetest songs I could think of. In these sometimes troubling times around the world, let's all try to pay it forward today. Do something charitable today, especially if you don't normally take the time to do it daily. Consider this one thing. What would this world be like if everyone in it was acting like you? Don't do this to get noticed, don't do it and post it. Do something and don't take credit. Post only if someone else did something that touched you today. Something that made you smile. Let today be an example of what the world could be if we did it everyday. And see if you can go a whole day saying only positive things to everyone. Can you make it one day? And Happy Birthday, sweet baby.

It's Stuck
I was trying to come up with a title for this mixtape pick. Some of you know that I take care of a 90+ year old alzheimer woman (my mother-in-law) and she gave me the inspiration of the bear in hibernation that is trying to get out of the cave, but is stuck. A great metaphor for what sometimes happens in life. I hate when it gets stuck, but a little fiber and you're good to go again. All the tracks are in bpm order and are in the camelot key of 5A. But a wide variety of musical genres that I had been listening to. Some surf, a couple of covers, a couple of hits and some rockers mixed with pop and country. Some older tracks and some much newer. They seem to move in a direction, but before it gets stuck it comes out somewhere else. I worked on it a while, changed it a few times, but this is what I ended up with.

Wisdom Of Sea & Sky
All of the picks of the so-called Wormhole tapes have very little in common, other than similar looking covers. Same font, but different wormholes in the background. This has fire and flame in the wild blue yonder. We also get a couple of versions of Kraftwerk songs. Mostly because I have been listening to the Residents and Snakefinger. Robots came into it as did models. That of course led to parties and zydeco mixed with some leftover grave rockabilly. BTW, no one, yet has figured out the titles of all these wormhole compilations - They mean something.
Wisdom Of Sea & Sky
01 Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Jhoole Jhool Lal (Junglist Version)

17 Cars - Sad Song
18 The Treble Spankers - Das Model
19 True Villains - Dig Your Grave
Surf-A-Billy 1
There is no real genre called Surf-A-Billy, but this comes close. Some surf, some rockabilly, some crossovers on this pick. Shorter songs, so 28 fit in this compilation. I was listening to the psychobilly of the Billy Goat Gruff mixtape of three days ago and realized how much overlap there was especially on the tracks I didn't use on that one. Similar to the old Surf Beat show I used to air years ago filled with Surf Punk - there is a lot of overlap between the genres. I love the cover with the surfing goat with a pompadour and leather jacket. AI can be our friend. I hope I can do another one of these sometime in the future. I like it, it's fun.

01 The Sundowners - Snake Eyed Woman

Leila & Judy
Not sure why, but the title reminded me of Lilo & Stitch, although it has nothing to do with it at all. Eno has an album called Another Green World (the song here is not from that album, however) and there is French band on this pick called the green black women. I wish they were still playing, because they were really great in concert. Anyway this has quite a bit of music from around the globe that shouldn't belong together (and it doesn't), but if you get to hear Hawkwind and Brian Eno and Les Negresses Verte on one compilation, it's worth it. Is it totally coincidence that all the songs are in the same key?
Leila & Judy
01 Anubian Lights - MutaShaker (Thank You)

What's The Connection? Columbus
Happy Columbus Day! It's an important day to celebrate Italian heritage and is a celebration of Europeans beginning the exploration of and colonization of the New World. He made it to the Americas! Established primarily to promote Italians who were, at the time, facing discrimination. Technically Columbus arrived on October 12th, but his day is celebrated on the second Monday of October. There are great festivities to go to around the US, so have some fun. The songs on this connection are not all about the day or the man, but they all have Columbus in the title. The Siouxsie track at the end only has it in the title of the mix, but the song is about the Edge of the World, so it more than qualifies. Look for more Italian songs by searching Paisan or clicking there. Try snacking on some cannoli or zeppole today!

Billy Goat Gruff
It's been awhile since I posted a rockabilly pick. This one is more psychobilly meets gothabilly thank straightup rockabilly. It's got one older pick with Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Not that some of the others don't go back aways, just not that far. There is an "older" Cramps track, for instance. For some reason the rockabilly stuff isn't as visited as some of the other genres. Not sure why, there are some great tracks. All of these are more at a specific end of rockabilly. We'll see how it goes. Tell me what genres you'd like to hear most. Or do you just like to click on the covers, because they're cool? Or do you like to be surprised? By the way the cover today is put together from several sources, including children's book illustrator, Jeff Crosby, that I liked.

Rice Balls
After yesterday's post, I am not sure if this pick can be worse. But I am trying. Some of these tracks were on yesterday's playlist, but I added to them to stay in the Asian field. Unlike Pocohantas, I really have Asian DNA, so I can make fun of part of myself. I'm not sure if some of these are disparaging slurs or were meant as such when they were written, but they could be seen as such. Heck, I was looking for that. All I can say is that I can live without a lot of things, but one I would have trouble with is rice. I could do without bread or potato, but rice would be hard to give up. Rice balls, bowls of rice, rice treats. Yumm! Indonesian rice, Indian rice, Spanish rice, Vietnamese rice balls, they're all good. Has nothing to do with these songs, but now you know more about me.

Tonks 1
Just a few weeks ago I posted a mixtape that I called Ik Ben Blauwe which is a slur against my racial heritage, but the songs weren't very stereotyped. These are. This pick is a wide variety of songs that stereotype a bunch of races. Arabs and Jews. Hispanic and Asian (I'll have more of these coming soon - I get a kick out of these especially since I am part Asian). Islands from Japan, Philipines and Vietnam are also covered. I get that many of these might be considered "off limits" to play nowadays, but they were recorded by some big name artists at one time or another. And I am not above going past what you should do. BTW, for those of you who do not know, the title is even worse than the songs. It is what some border patrol people (informally) call illegal aliens that they apprehend at the border when they try to cross without getting caught. I'm told it's the sound of a flashlight hitting someone's head as they resist arrest. I know. It's pretty bad. BTW, the cover is a caricature of my face.

Vikings (Leif Erikson Day)
Not sure how many people celebrate Leif Erikson day, but it is today. So I put together some Viking or Norse themed songs in this pick. Some have Viking in the title and most of the others at least seem very Viking. Valkyries, Thor (the God Of Thunder and his hammer) as well as themes of invading barbarians prevade these songs. Spinal Tap has a comedic look at that, and it's all fitting in for this day. A lot of metal associated with Viking music, but I threw in a few that skirt around it. I have enough for at least two more of these volumes, but you will have to wait for those.

What's The Connection? Bowling 1
Bowling is an American pastime. Other countries do bowl, but it's a bit different in each country. In Canada, they use smaller balls and less pins, in the UK it's more Lawn Bowling. In Japan, it's pretty hi-tech and probably includes karaoke. In the US, we bowl while drinking beers and shooting guns (I'm kidding). No guns needed, but beers may be likely, except for kids parties. I actually was a DJ at a bowling alley bar. We had a dance floor, a bar, lights, the whole works, People bowled, drank and danced. Great gig. Sometimes I had a packed bar and sometimes it was just me, the bartender, a cocktail waitress and the local drunk (who was there daily). Anyway here's a bunch of songs about bowling in this connection. I started with two songs. The one from the Casuals and the one from the ska band, Let's Go Bowling. Do you bowl? What is bowling like where you are from?

No One Told Me
But I will tell you. I was re-upping some old picks and re-listened to the Zombies Family Pick and that led me to Santana, some new Sweet and some less old Max Webster. I decided to fill it in with a bunch of classic rock and one (and a half?) disco songs (just for fun). The title, of course, from the Zombies song lyrics, although I used the Santana version here. Starz and Colosseum have the only older tracks that weren't hits, but they probably should have been, if they weren't on some sort of chart. Even though it's not the classic lineup (at all) the Sweet track is actually pretty good, as is most of the rest of the album.

Get No Respect
I thought of Rodney Dangerfield when I was making this pick of under-rated songs. Yes it's got lots of variety in genres, but almost all of them didn't top charts and maybe should have. Out of all these, which is your favorite? Do you think any don't belong? We could all come up with a list like this, I bet. There are a couple of tracks on here that could easily be substituted by other tracks in that artist's catalogue, and some that have much more popular tracks.
Get No Respect
01 Jimmy Campbell - Half Baked
02 Freddie King - Going Down
03 Leon Russell - Shoot Out On The Plantation

What's The Connection? Shaker 1
Here's a connection that is sort of like the ones from a couple of days ago, but instead of shaking it, we're the shakers. Sometimes, here, it means your booty and sometimes the earth. Every now and again it's about people doing things, but mostly it's about something on your body moving, or earthquakes. Coming from California I don't have an irrational fear of earthquakes (instead I have an irrational fear of tornados or hail.) Hopefully not about any booty part shaking. I tend to like that. What shaker song do you like best?

Ése 2
The previous Ése pick (volume one of Ese is here) tells the story of how it came to be. Basically since this is National Taco day I figured I would finally post this second volume. It's got two of the same bands from volume one, but the rest are different. Still many more to add, I'm sure. Mostly this is Chicano based rock and roll although stuff like Phil Manzanera is much more Cuban based. Let's call it Latin based rock. A bunch of Doug Sahm who was a big supporter and champion of this genre. A couple of California based bands who really rock including Dr. Loco and Mestizo Beat (one of the bands on volume one, too). Dude, I think you will like this continuation.

Excuse Me
In my head this pick title sounds like Steve Martin and Dan Akroyd saying it. You can hear it in your head. Nothing on here to suggest Saturday Night. It has more to do with Emitt Rhodes than anything else. A bunch of songs that needed another chance, so here it is. You can give it to them. Newer Doobies, 80's Olivia and 70's Taste Of Honey that I saw performing this song live on some disco special. Nico doing Jackson Browne is nice, as is Big Star with their song that did get another chance in the 80's with the Bangles.

GPS's
This mixtape pick is mostly Garage, Psychedelic, Surf, Ska and Shag. Therefore the GP and the S's in the title. It's your guide (get it?) to some deep cuts mixed in with some tracks you might already know. A couple of Psychedelic tracks from the 80's paisley resurgence. See my Paisley Picks for a few more. A couple of bands I want to highlight here. I just like the Surfrajettes (too cool.) I keep thinking that everyone, by now, has heard Fishbone (one of my favorite ska bands). I definitely have seen them live more than most. So great! The Cramps, Agent Orange and Lounge Lizards are so different and yet so similarly amazing. Lots of other bands you may have heard, but playing some lesser known tracks of each. And a couple of bands, you may never have heard, but now you can search out some of their other stuff.

What's The Connection? Shake It 1
This connection follows the Shake one from a bit ago. And there are a couple of doubles from that one on here, but also it has a few more Shake It songs that I wish I could have fit on here. You'll just have to add them separately (Cars, Luke Bryan, Pitbull). But this one is pretty good even without those few. Just make sure to do what it says and Shake It while you listen. Hands, booty or just a drink. Which of these things to shake are your favorites? What's missing?
