What's The Connection? Leap Day 1

I have another one of these ready to go, so look for it in four years. This connection is to celebrate Leap Year or more accurately, Leap Day. I once knew a girl who tried to walk across a lake, no, no, no I digress. I once knew a girl in school who was born on Leap Day. She said it was cool, but completely not cool at all. They celebrated March 1 or Feb 28 depending on if it was a weekend or not and every four years she got a big party. Seemed cool to me, but I didn't have to deal with being four years old (at the time). Anyway, lots of Leap songs. I didn't use any Jump songs or anything to do with multiples of four. That will come next Leap Day.

Big In Japan Family

What with the Super Friends compilation of yesterday, it was time to post this English punk band: Big In Japan. I'm not going to say much about this pick except that no one really knows their music, and they are more famous for who came out of their band and what those people did. So here are the members: Bill Drummond, Jayne Casey, Ian Broudie, Clive Langer, Ambrose Reynolds, Holly Johnson, Budgie, David Balfe. Now figure out what bands they went to. They are not in release order. They are in BPM order. And here's a clue. One track has nothing to do with the band. Not just to throw you off, because it kind of fits, but not really. I do like the track, though.

19 Dalek I Love You - Horrorscope
20 Teardrop Explodes - Reward
21 Alphaville - Big In Japan

Super Friends

A fun pick to make, but kinda obvious. I tried to stay with Super Groups that were put together with at least three people who were already famous in another band and came together to record something. I tried to stay away from bands that dumped one guy and just replaced him and changed the name of the band. So no Tones On Tail or Love and Rockets. I tried to stay in the rock field, but strayed a little. Sorry. I picked songs that I liked from each band. Sometimes that was not their biggest "hit" (Sorry, no Lucky Man here). I titled it Friends instead of Groups, because I wanted to use super heroes on the cover. No other reason. And obviously it has nothing to do with any song I picked.

Deep Purple Glover Pick

Here's a more extended Deep dive into Roger Glover on this pick. You'll notice a lot more Deep Purple songs. Some that are not on my Deep Purple Picks, some with different versions. Because he was with the band for so long he had less guest spots. I did include a sampling of his time in Rainbow and his solo albums. Much was also done with Ian Gillan. They kind of came in to Deep Purple together and seem to hang after together. So there are a few tracks with him on here. But also some tracks with Glenn Hughes and Ronnie James Dio. His family pick is just a bit more sparse than say Hughes, who will be coming up soon.

Deep Purple Glover

01 Deep Purple - Maybe I'm a Leo

16 Gillan & Glover - Telephone Box
17 Deep Purple - First Sign Of Madness
18 Deep Purple - Fire, Ice & Dynamite

Steve Morse Family Pick

I fist saw Steve Morse with the then Dixie Dregs, later as the Dregs. What shows! He ended up playing in a few other bands and playing solo and also guesting with friends. This pick is a family sampling to get you started on the Steve Morse bandwagon. It's been awhile since I saw him live, but definitely worth it in whatever incarnation he comes. You will notice that there are five tracks that are from "tribute" albums. He seems to like participating and he holds his own on every track. More than hold his own, he is excellent.

Steve Morse Family Pick

01 Bob Daisley & Friends (Steve Morse & Ricky Warwick) - Parisienne Walkways
02 Steve Morse, Jim Beard, Randy Brecker & Percy Jones - At The Edge Of The Middle

12 Steve Morse Band - Heightened Awareness
13 Steve Morse - Freeway Jam
14 Joe Lynn Turner featuring Steve Morse - Jungle Love
15 Flying Colors - Mask Machine

Purple Guitar Family

I have been on a Deep Purple dive and this pick is no different. This revolves around the five guitarists that have been in Deep Purple and a sampling of other things they have done. Ritchie Blackmore, Tommy Bolin, Joe Satriani, Steve Morse and Simon McBride. There was one other guy who played in the studio on one track, but no one remembers him. Simon McBride is the most current guitarist, but so far has not appeared on any Deep Purple recordings. Joe Satriani filled in on a tour with them, was invited to stay, but was busy with his solo career. He's so good however that I put in a couple of tracks from him. Solo and with Chickenfoot. We could do a pick just on Joe. Ritchie Blackmore appeared on the most studio albums, but Steve Morse was with the band for more years. Both brilliant guitar players. Tracks 1-5 are Ritchie and tracks 10-15 are Steve. We could do a Morse Family pick on his own and have a bunch of different bands. Blackmore has a few, but mostly Rainbow and Deep Purple.

Purple Guitar Family

01 Deep Purple - Highway Star
02 Rainbow - Man On The Silver Mountain
03 Rainbow - Since You Been Gone
04 Ritchie Blackmore - Apache
05 Screamin' Lord Such & The Savages (Ritchie Blackmore) - Train Kept A Rollin'
06 Deep Purple - You Keep On Moving
07 Tommy Bolin - Savannah Woman
08 Joe Satriani - Surfing With The Alien
09 Chickenfoot - Oh Yeah
10 Deep Purple - Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming
11 Dregs - Cruise Control.mp3
12 Kansas - All I Wanted
13 Steve Morse Band - Heightened Awareness
14 Steve Morse - Mood For A Day
15 Flying Colors - Mask Machine
16 Simon Mcbride - Don't Be A Fool

Deep Purple Pick 3

This pick has some great tracks on it but has the least from each album and I even skipped an album. Not my favorite. This has Mark 3, Mark 4, Mark 5, Mark 6, Mark 7 and Mark 8 versions of the band. Everyone but Ian Paice was replaced, quit or got fired at one time or another. Some cool variations are in here. Great guitarists, singers all cycled through from 1973 to the present. Although for a five year stretch Mark 2 was back in business and after some left Mark 2 came back for an album or two again. Four or five guitar players, one drummer, three bassists, four vocalists and a few keyboard players later and they are still playing and making some killer rock and roll.

Deep Purple Pick 3

27 Deep Purple - Burn
28 Deep Purple - Might Just Take Your Life
29 Deep Purple - Mistreated
30 Deep Purple - Stormbringer
31 Deep Purple - Lady Double Dealer
32 Deep Purple - Soldier Of Fortune

34 Deep Purple - King Of Dreams
35 Deep Purple - Love Conquers All
36 Deep Purple - Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming
37 Deep Purple - Bludsucker
38 Deep Purple - House Of Pain
39 Deep Purple - Rapture Of The Deep
40 Deep Purple - Vincent Price
41 Deep Purple - And The Address
42 Deep Purple - Caught in the Act

Deep Purple Pick 2

This is probably the most famous of the various versions of the band. You can look all this up easily enough, but mark 2 basically adds new singer and bassist. Mark 2 is also the one version that ends up having "reunion albums". I include tracks of those reunion albums in this pick. In none of these picks do I include Orchestral albums or live ones. They are good, but get them on your own to figure out which you like or don't. I always end up with this version of the band. Even though each version has some great songs. Notice how the songs are in the order that they were recorded (or released) at least sort of. Through out all of these I place singles in random places near where the album was.

Deep Purple Pick 2

12 Deep Purple - Black Night
13 Deep Purple - Speed King
14 Deep Purple - Child In Time
15 Deep Purple - Strange Kind Of Woman
16 Deep Purple - Fireball
17 Deep Purple - Demon's Eye
18 Deep Purple - Highway Star
19 Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
20 Deep Purple - Lazy
21 Deep Purple - Space Truckin'
22 Deep Purple - Woman From Tokyo
23 Deep Purple - Knocking At Your Back Door
24 Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers
25 Deep Purple - Bad Attitude
26 Deep Purple - The Battle Rages On

Deep Purple Pick 1

It's interesting that Deep Purple had various members playing with them for a season. In this next couple of picks, I will divide them up by the group. Mark 1 (mk1) will be the first incarnation of the band and basically the first three albums. The most amount of covers were on these three albums. Five songs by other artists. That's almost half of the songs I picked. But all great versions. And the originals sound great and show major potential. Notice that the playlist covers all match the last few days. I just love that shot from space and how the band nameshows through.

Deep Purple Pick 1

01 Deep Purple - Hush
02 Deep Purple - Mandrake Root
03 Deep Purple - Hey Joe
04 Deep Purple - Help
05 Deep Purple - Kentucky Woman
06 Deep Purple - Wring That Neck (Hard Road)
07 Deep Purple - Shield
08 Deep Purple - River Deep, Mountain High
09 Deep Purple - Emmaretta
10 Deep Purple - April
11 Deep Purple - The Bird Has Flown

Deep Purple Gillan Pick

Completely out of order, this family pick is from Mk2 of Deep Purple with Ian Gillan as lead vocalist. Probably my favorite of the Purples is this version of them. Either way a few Deep Purple songs, a couple of tracks when he was in Black Sabbath, solo tracks from a few different bands and an early track from a pre-Purple band. Even a track with Tony Iommi from Sabbath. And obviously some of the better known Deep Purple songs were during his tenure. But again, this isn't the first version of the band. Although I hear him as the "voice" of Deep Purple, he didn't come in until album 4. More picks coming later. But do notice the cover.

Deep Purple Gillan Pick

01 Gillan - Sleeping On The Job
02 Black Sabbath - Trashed
03 Black Sabbath - Disturbing The Priest
04 Gillan & Glover - Lonely Avenue
05 The Javelins - Can I Get A Witness

09 Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water
10 Gillan - Trouble
11 Deep Purple - Fireball
12 Gillan - Living For The City
13 Deep Purple - Woman From Tokyo
14 Ian Gillan - When A Blind Man Cries
15 Deep Purple - Black Night
16 Gillan & Glover - Telephone Box
17 Ian Gillan Band - Clear Air Turbulence
18 Ian Gillan & Tony Iommi - Holy Water

Deep Purple Coverdale Pick

I am not sure why I am starting at Mk3 of Deep Purple, but here it is. I will be dive into a multi volume pick of Deep Purple and family. I am not doing a copy of the Family and Friends CD set they already have out. My take on it is a little different. This is David Coverdale vocals in Deep Purple, Solo, with Jimmy Page and as Whitesnake. Kind of a sampling in one CD's worth of stuff. It's not neccesarily all his best tracks in any of those configurations, but I think they're good. Basically Coverdale was on three albums with Deep Purple and there is a pick from each. I tried to get a pick from each of the solo albums (got close) and him in Whitesnake (failed completely). Hopefully you like it anyway. I will do Gillan and just Deep Purple in the coming days.

Deep Purple Coverdale Pick

01 Deep Purple - You Keep On Moving
02 Deep Purple - Stormbringer
03 Whitesnake - Here I Go Again
04 Deep Purple - Burn
05 Whitesnake - Still of the Night

08 David Coverdale & Jimmy Page - Shake My Tree
09 Whitesnake - Fool For Your Loving
10 Whitesnake - Love Ain't No Stranger
11 Whitesnake - Crying In The Rain
12 Deep Purple - Soldier Of Fortune
13 David Coverdale - Whitesnake
14 David Coverdale - Only My Soul
15 David Coverdale - Love Is Blind
16 David Coverdale - The Last Note Of Freedom
17 Whitesnake - Is This Love

What's The Connection? Slippin & Slidin 1

I probably should have posted this connection in the summertime, but the living is easy. Seriously it's somehwat warm and even if it wasn't who wouldn't want to think of a nice slip and slide for fun? It didn't start with the Slip & Slide or even Paul Simon. Actually it was the Commodores. One of the first songs I knew from the group. And not one of the songs is about the kind of slipping we did as kids. I'll let you figure it out. Either way a fun one to listen to, even though it goes all over the place.

WTF?!

This is a mixtape or playlist pick based on not much. For the last couple of days I've posted some picks of a few artists that led me on a few rabbit holes. The biggest one for me was Jones and James in their band Carbon/Silicon. I took one of their songs I liked (What The Fuck) and a couple of songs from their respective picks (Sisters Of Mercy, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Big Audio Dynamite) and added some other songs I just felt like adding. Some that I have added in other comps over the years and some I have never added. Just stuff I felt like "WTF" I'll add it. Not always my favorite song by that artist, but good tracks nonetheless. I hope you like it. I had fun making the cover for it.

Mick Jones Pick

To be clear this pick is about the Mick Jones from The Clash. Yesterday I posted Tony James who played with Mick in a band I had barely heard of a couple of weeks ago, but now one of my favorite songs right now is by Carbon/Silicon. It's on both of those picks. But this is different from yesterday, in that Big Audio Dynamite and the Clash are here. What I discovered as I was looking at some of his guest spots was the unexpected General Public appearance, plus a several others. Some I knew about, some I didn't. I fit in seven slots, plus the Carbon/Silicon tracks (sorry, they're also on yesterday's pick. I like these tracks!) BTW, is it just me? Or does he look like a British Seinfeld?

Tony James Pick

I've put this pick off for awhile, not because of any other reason, but that I totally forgot I said I was going to do it. So, finally here it is. Tony James is known for being the bassist for a few pretty well known bands and a couple lesser known bands influential though they may be. He was part of the beginning of London SS (future members of the Damned and the Clash) but didn't record anything. Then Generation X which ended up becoming Gen X and then Billy Idol solo. He wrote a song for Lords Of The New Church, but didn't appear on any recordings, then started Sigue Sigue Sputnik and played with them for awhile. Moved to Sisters Of Mercy (also check out this Sisters WTC) for an album, some singles and a tour and then through a couple of other bands until ending up with Mick Jones (ex Clash and Big Audio Dynamite) in Carbon/Silicon. They all have some good tracks and here they are.

Tony James Pick

What's The Connection? Eyes 2

Part two of the Eyes Connection. The Eye's have it! Several of the tracks that got left out of Eyes part 1 finally make it on volume 2. One of my favorites is the Lettermen medley, which I used to sing to my daughter when she was a baby. I also really like The Sweet song. And you can't go wrong with Dean Martin, ever. There are enough songs to make multiple more volumes of this, but for now, this will have to do.

Throbbing Gristle Pick 2

A continuation of the Throbbing Gristle Pick from yesterday. Started because of a pick that Moozler Music did of Psychic TV. Made me think of this TG pick I had made, but hadn't posted yet. I love the tiki cover I made for this. And of course it is pink. One of my very favorite songs by TG is track 15 which is about a real murder that happened in the UK. Everything I've been able to figure out, is that everything they say in the song is real. It really happened that way.

TG Pick 2

13 Throbbing Gristle - Hamburger Lady
14 Throbbing Gristle - Subhuman
15 Throbbing Gristle - Very Friendly
16 Throbbing Gristle - Adrenalin
17 Throbbing Gristle - United
18 Throbbing Gristle - Dead on Arrival
19 Throbbing Gristle - 20 Jazz Funk Greats
20 Throbbing Gristle - Distant Dreams (Part Two)
21 Throbbing Gristle - Almost A Kiss

Throbbing Gristle Pick 1

This pick of TG is a two parter. About an hour for each part. Too long for one volume and just long enough for two. TG is one of my favorite bands. Definitely in the top 10 most all the time and usually in the top 5. And I include the whole family pick in that assessment. But this is strictly Throbbing Gristle. Sure they were influential, but they also made some great music (noise). I have some of both in these two volumes. I am not asking you to love them like I do, but to give them a chance. Listen to both volumes at least twice. Unless you already love them, in which case listen over and over. I do. I tell you why I posted this tomorrow.

Throbbing Gristle Pick 1

01 Throbbing Gristle - What A Day
02 Throbbing Gristle - The Man From Nowhere
03 Throbbing Gristle - Something Came Over Me

06 Throbbing Gristle - Persuasion
07 Throbbing Gristle - Splitting Sky
08 Throbbing Gristle - Cabaret Voltaire
09 Throbbing Gristle - Hot On The Heels Of Love
10 Throbbing Gristle - Six Six Sixties
11 Throbbing Gristle - Five Knuckle Shuffle
12 Throbbing Gristle - Zyklon B Zombie

I Am Easily aMoozed

I followed a link and went to a site that I liked: Moozler Music. Annd Moozler was making a compilation and mentioned making it for his daughters to appreciate a certain section of music. I had gone through that many times with my daughter. I also looked around the site and liked a bunch of the posts. Done that several times on other people's sites, like Groovy Library and made sure to add them to my reading list on the side of my blog. I really only add stuff that I like. Anyway. Moozler started my muse to bring out a few things that I am adding including this pick. I really am easily amused especially by puns and alliteration, so that's why I came up with the title and cover. I hope you like it, especially if you are Moozler or his daughters, but anyone. No rhyme or reason, just starting out with Dali's Car and Tones On Tail and going a direction from there.

Jim Peterik Family Pick

Before I started this pick, I had no idea who Jim Peterik was. I was looking up some stuff about the band Ides Of March. It led me to Survivor which intrigued me. Then I discovered that Jim had written songs for Cheap Tric, Sammy Hagar, 38 Special, Doobie Brothers and more. And not just the "extra" songs. Some of the hits as well. The more I looked, the more I found. He played in Chase, with World Stage and had solo stuff too. Here's a sampling of his work in case you didn't know it was him.

Make Love Not War volume 2 (Hippie Music Connection) Repost

Here's a repost of volume 2 of the What's The Connection? Make Love Not War. All hippie songs. Check out volume one for how I classify Hippie music for this pick. You don't have to tell me that my classification system is slightly off center, I know. It works for me. You will notice that the numbering sequence starts after the previous volume, so you can put them all in one folder. Just adjust your m3u playlists. Notice the same cover for each volume. At least I designed it myself. I think it looks groovy. Always look at the cover closely. Another volume tomorrow.

Make Love Not War volume 1 (Hippie Music Connection) Repost

Hippie music to me is a little different than psychedelic music or acid rock. It can mean anything, really, that you want it to. Hippies in the 60's listened to most all music that was out in the sixties. So this repost of this pick has more to do with that, it is not necessarily psychedelic music (which I call paisley music in my weird classification system). And it's not necessarily acid rock (which I think of as psychedelic music that's harder rock, but not quite prog). And you can get those by going back a few days. But everything else that's left over. And it's usually connected in some fashion or another with peace and love and doing your own thing, man. Listen to this What's The Connection? and get an idea of what I mean. I have a few volumes of this, so be patient, They will be posted. Enjoy the cover.

Acid Rock 2

A continuation. With all the same questions. Tell me the difference. What is the difference between Acid Rock and Psychedelic? Probably not much. Subsets of each other and lots of overlap I'm sure, depending on who's making the list. No difference here. In my pick I have artists that belong in the Psychedelic (Paisley) category, but also Acid Rock and Garage categories for me. I tend to put more "rock" bands in this category. But as you will see, it's not a hard and fast rule. These songs tend to be longer. I still like the cover. Blotter paper always reminds me. And it's the exact same as volume one, since, to me, it's a continuation. BTW, did you notice that today is 2-4-24? Yep.

Acid Rock 1

What is the difference between Acid Rock and Psychedelic? Probably not much. Subsets of each other and lots of overlap I'm sure, depending on who's making the list. I'm no different. In my pick I have artists that span not only Psychedelic (Paisley), but also Acid Rock and Garage categories for me. I tend to put more "rock" bands in this category. But as you will see, it's not a hard and fast rule. These songs tend to be longer. So tell me the difference. I just like the cover. A closeup of a blurry blotter bit.
