Jungle Connection (songs with Jungle in the title)

A wide variety of songs with Jungle in the title. This Jungle What's the Connection? was inspired by my listening to Bootsy Collins and the Jungle Brothers at this time (over and over again). I got mesmerized by the two albums (EP and album). So i started thinking of other Jungle songs I liked. This is what came out. I am positive that there are hundreds more. Tell me your favorite Jungle song in the comments. I added George of the Jungle theme song, because there was room at the end of the CD. As always click on the album cover. BTW, If you dig the Bootsy, I suggest getting the whole EP: the long versions are killer.

Beat This (RIYL Hoodoo Gurus Leilani)

This is kind of a RIYL (Recommended If You Like) playlist. I put Hoodoo Gurus in the title, but really it may not have started with them. But it kind of doesn't matter with RIYL's because pick any song that you like and the rest should be a little matchie-matchie. It has to do with the drum sound. To me they all have a similar feel. I know they don't actually, but they all could easily follow another. The Adam and the Ants track was from a flexi disc, but the rest should be on one album or another. Although the Passengers does seem difficult to find outside of Australia. Anyway enjoy this one and by all means make some suggestions for a future volume. Not sure why, but I have always liked the cover. Simple.

Beat This

01 Hoodoo Gurus - Leilani

Amen Connection (Religious Connections)

This Amen Connection is tenuous at best. They aren't really religious songs, but songs that have something to do with religion, if even just partially. It came about because there was a someone that had a great show after my show that was all Christian bands. So I wanted to come up with non-Christian bands that mentioned something about religion, whether or not it had a Christian message. So this was my What's The Connection? I still like the songs, so forgive the lousy attitude in making it. I ended up making several related Connections (Angels, Jesus, Heaven etc.) Look for them at some time in the future.

WTC? Amen

Slipped My Disco 1 Connection

This will be a fun start to a several volume set of playlists with the connection of disco. But not just regular disco. These are all bands/artists that were not known as disco bands, but they did a disco song or disco album. I will post the other sets on future Saturday Nites. Some of the artists in the sets may have had their biggest hit with the disco song and for some it was their worst. You judge, not me. I like them all, but then again, I like disco. The album cover (click on it) is a snapshot of a local Bay Area TV station's regular disco dance party, so it's not from the seventies or eighties. Post a comment with your favorite disco song by a non-disco artist, maybe it is coming on one of the other picks.

Slipped My Disco vol 1

01 Queen - Another One Bites The Dust
02 George Benson - Give Me The Night

Math Connection

These are all math connected songs. Because we need to use math at least once after school. Actually there are so many songs related to math, mostly because math is related to everything. I was watching that new series on Apple TV called Foundation, based, loosely, on the Isaac Asimov Foundation series of books. The whole premise is a new kind of math. It's not as boring as I make it out to be. It really is everything.

"Don't know much trigonometry
 Don't know much about algebra
Don't know what a slide rule is for
But I do know one and one is two"

So here is my "What's The Connection?" about Math. Not just songs with Math in the title, but also Adding and Subtracting and Multiplication and Division. Even more basic: down to Counting. I made sure to not use any Kids music. There are hundreds of great kids songs about math, too. As it is, I know I missed a few obvious ones, so if you catch them, let me know which ones in the comments below. And how do you like the cover?

Rundgren Productions Connection

Todd Rundgren is an amazing artist. From Nazz to Utopia and all the fun stuff inbetween he just is amazing. Someday, you'll have to ask me about how I trapped him for several hours, but not today. He's one of those guys that when he produces an album, he puts his stamp on it. I noticed that with several producers that when they produced an album of an artist, to me, it was the best album they ever did. It's that way with Todd. The artist might hate Rundgren after working with him, but he pulls out the best of each. This is my "What's The Connection?" list of some productions by Todd Rundgren.

Cut & Paste Connection

I've been fascinated by William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin's cutup method. Burroughs applied it words and I followed the application to Laurie Anderson's amazing work. I got to meet her once, she was way cool and very nice. But off topic. I started to see it in a bunch of dance music. Once I got started I narrowed it down a bit and here's the end result. I like how some of these "bands" were one time knockoffs. As if they were ashamed of the music (or the message). Either way I like it. At least one of these tracks actually cuts up William S Burroughs! How cool. I'm sure there's more just like this. I'd love to hear your suggestions for what I left out.

RIYL Y&T (Recommended If You Like Yesterday and Today)

Bay Area band (Oakland, Caifornia) Y&T also known as Yesterday and Today hasn't done much lately, but were and are influential in the area of heavy metal. At least one member of Metallica started playing because of this band. Anyway, as a California boy, I liked the band and I love making RIYL compilations every now and again. So here are my recommendations if you like Y&T. Or if you like one of these songs and don't listen to Y&T, perhaps you should. And try to find the albums of all these artists, they are all good. BTW this song by them isn't even the best or most popular, but it does rock.

RIYL Uptown Funk

You know how you are listening to a song and it it really feels like you've heard the song before? I was listening to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' hit Uptown Funk and it kept bothering me. What I Do To Prepare MP3's

Some people have asked me what I do to prepare my mp3 files. I will show you the programs I use (and alternative versions that are open source). All links are below so you can follow along.

First I always start with a somewhat clean mp3. If I download from a reputable site, there is probably minimal I need to do. Most of my mp3's come from CD rips, LP rips and every now and again from a cassette. A program that can help in all those cases (and just to clean up) is Audacity. It is a cross platform open source program that you can use to edit files. It lets you remove clicks and pops from files sourced from LP's for instance. Or remove 20 seconds (or any amount) of silence at the end of a badly recorded mp3. In a pinch you can use it to change a variable rate mp3 to a constant bit rate mp3. There are some finicky mp3 players that have trouble with the former.

If you use usb record players or cassette players they can go directly into Audacity. In fact a lot of those players come with audacity. For CD Rips it works, but I'd rather use the paid version of dbPowerAmp for that. It has a pretty good CD Ripper. Audiograbber was another one I used.

dbPowerAmp is good for converting other music formats into mp3. I know some people love flac and wav and aiff etc files, but some mp3 players and even some pro DJ software will not play them well, if at all. Up-sampling does not help make a file sound better, but also does not hurt except for hard drive space.

There are many mp3 Tag programs. I happen to use Tag&Rename. They have a free and a paid version (cheap) and it handles all sorts of tags. It even allows you to include a cover into the mp3 file. But for sure use it to add track numbers (and disc numbers if you have more than one volume). Hint: many mp3 players will group by the tag "Album". If it is different for each disc number then it will never be grouped together in those players. I suggest filling out as much info as you have in each mp3 file.

But at bare minimum make sure: Track Number, Track Name, Artist Name, Album Name is filled out. If it is a compilation make sure you check that it is set as a compilation (a checkbox in Tag&Rename) and that you set Album Artist as "Various Artists". Do not set it as VA, or anything else. Music tracking software such as last.fm will recognize Various Artists but gets confused with other iterations.

You don't have to, but it's always nice to use software such as mp3gain to be sure that each mp3 is played at similar volumes. This can be one of the most annoying things ever (especially if someone actually still burns CD's from your comps). If you are playing mp3 files that are all over the place in volume the listener needs to constantly adjust volume. Not a big deal if you are using these and are a DJ, because you will adjust anyway as you mix in songs, but horrible if you are playing an entire playlist.

Covers. I cannot stress how cool it is to get your covers with your compilations. Some of you have the most amazing ideas. Love them! But if you do not have covers made, you do not need to be a graphic designer and use Illustrator or CorelDraw. There are a bunch of free online CD Cover Makers. I included a link to Canva CD Cover maker. It's online and has numerous templates to play around with. Make good use of creative commons google image search and customize any one of them.

Then just use Tag&Rename to add it to the tags. If you prefer not to add it to the tag (it does increase file size), then be sure to upload to your compilation's folder as "folder.jpg". I usually try to save it as both folder.jpg and compname.jpg if I do not add it to mp3 tag. I don't mind the extra size and I know if I use a file somewhere else the cover goes with. Do what you like. Better any cover than no cover though.

Most people probably do not care if the mp3 has a BPM tag, but I use it a lot. Fairly easy to run BPM Analyzer, just point it at your folder and select all. It automatically calculates the BPM for you and inserts it into the mp3 tag header.

I included a link to Mixed-In-Key, but for most people that will be overkill. I use it on mp3's that go into my DJ "crate". It allows you to use the camelot wheel for mixing. Just another layer of craziness that sounds cool when you mix from track to track. Fun to play with but you have to pay to play. If you haven't tried mixing in key, it really does help make it sound right. Have you ever heard a mash up that didn't quite sound right? Probably they didn't use key matches.

I also included a link to Platinum Notes. It cleans mp3 files. Again a paid piece of software, but it is cool. Does automatically some of the things you can do manually in Audacity. Just point to your compilation folder and run. Made by the same guys who make Mixed-In-Key. Works really well on most tracks. Check as you go.

Anyway, a quick guide to how I prepare my mp3's. Hopefully it helps someone. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments. Here are the links for each.
