What's The Connection? Walking In 1

This connection is a follow up to previous Walking Connections. There are some duplicates, but this comp is different because each title has Walking In within the title. Inside this are a few versions of the Shangri-Las hit, even though the Go-Go's put the parentheses around the wrong part. Flash and the Pan does a version of another hit that I know most from Grace Jones (who is on one of the other Connections). My favorites are the Blackbyrds and probably Missing Persons. But all are pretty good.

Devo Pick

From the very beginning I always liked Devo. Seen them in concert several times, even was a devotee. Devo has always been good luck for me. This pick is a sampling of my favorites across the years, including some movie soundtrack songs. It starts off with the song I used to start one of my radio shows and has songs from  the early days up to more devolved later stuff. I know they have tons of compilations, but this is slightly different, mostly because it's my pick of their songs. Put on your energy dome and listen.

Top Pick Albums 1980

Yesterday I posted the top pick of songs from the year 1980. Today it's the top albums of 1980. Now this is purely subjective. It has nothing to do with charts or plays or anything like that. I had a couple of criteria. One. I had to own the album. I had to like it, of course. And I tried not to pick an album that I had picked a song from for my top twenty of the year. I am posting the top ten albums for me. One through ten is my favorite track at the time from the album. I also picked a second track from each album for side two (these were originally cassettes - mixtapes). Somewhere near the end of the decade instead of the second track I picked songs from my favorite compilations of the year, But that doesn't happen til much later. They aren't in order of my liking them. If it was how much I listened to each album it would be hard to say, but I have to admit it was probably Billy Joel. That was on repeat when I was on a trip to Hawaii that year and kept getting played after I came back.

Top Pick Albums 1980

01 Pretenders - Precious
02 Kate Bush - Babooshka

19 Martha And The Muffins - Cheesies And Gum
20 U2 - Stories For Boys

Top Pick 1980

Back right around this year I started making my Top Picks at the end of each year. I had a couple of rules, which I will explain. First like every pick on this site, I could only use songs or albums that I owned. I had to like it enough to have it in my collection. I could never keep it to my top ten, so I picked Twenty. I would then make that into a mixtape (later a mix CD). I also made a top ten albums list for the year and mostly no tracks from the album list would be on the tracks list. My albums lists I will post later. They did not have to be released as a single to make it on my Top Picks. But the songs must have been released in that year. I know that some countries release songs at different times. As long as my copy of the released album or single was of that year it qualified for me. So here is my list of picks from 1980. They are not in order of how much I like them. A couple of notes: Klark Kent was on green 10" vinyl and theSplit Enz had laser etching which was a thing for a while. Also, I will be posting one of these per month for now.

Surf Beat 4

I am not going to explain this again. Go to the Surf Beat 3 pick  for links to it all. Some of these punk bands I saw in the Bay Area in various clubs and halls. Los Olvidados played everywhere as did the Dead Kennedys. One of the bands I was not expecting one night out was the Wounds who I happened to catch at the Fab Mab one night as an opening band. They had a flute player! So punk. At the time mixing punk and surf was not that crazy. It just seemed to go well. Remember these are all songs I actually played during my show over the time I had it.

Woman Power

I made this pick years and years ago. Probably close to two decades ago. Not sure why it never got posted until now. It's got her favorite girl power song from the Runaways. She did get to meet Joan Jett around then. She was reading the Madeliene books (and watching the cartoons). Shonen Knife was big in our house, but also Spice Girls. I had some influence and she had more. Still does. Strong woman even now. And is a mom and a business owner. Proud of her. When she got this CD it had her name customized on the cover (instead of the generic Woman).

What's The Connection? Revolution 2

This is part two of my Revolution connections. It became quite apparent while I was making Revolution volume one that there were a lot of reggae artists that had made songs with revolution in the title in my collection. I had already started preparing this volume when I published the first one and I got quite a few suggestions for a reggae version. So even though I was planning on posting this on a revolutionary day, I posted it now instead. I still have plenty more for a more appropriate day later. Don't pressure me... lol.

Patrice Holloway Pick

Continuing the picks of the last few days, this is Patrice Holloway. Yes, she's the sister of Brenda Holloway and, yes, she was one of the voices of the original band Josie and the Pussycats. See the Josie pick from a few days ago. So there are a few Josie tracks and several Patrice solo tracks. The last five tracks are Patrice singing background with a bunch of other artists. Kay Hanley Pick

This pick is about Kay Hanley from Letters To Cleo. There are a few songs from the Josie And The Pussycats movie which features Hanley. The stars in the movie are on the Josie songs, but only as background singers. The lead is Hanley. There are also another track or two from movies. The first track is related to Sonic The Hedgehog, from Sonic Heroes. Also from the soundtracks of 10 Things I Hate About You and Just like Heaven. Lastly, I added some tracks of other artists featuring Hanley. Guitar and vocals she's got some cool stuff.

Josie And The Pussycats Family

This is a pretty interesting pick for me. First, I actually watched the cartoon. I even have some of the comic books. And when the live action movie came out I had a daughter the right age, so we watched it and enjoyed the soundtrack. I knew that the remake featured Kay Hanley from Letters To Cleo. And I knew that the original Josie band included Cheryl Ladd (Pre-Angels when she was Cherie Moor), who sang as Melody. She was my favorite angel and not just because she played tennis with my cousin. I found out later that Brenda Holloway's sister, Patrice Holloway was in the band as was Kathy Dougher (who was in a not so great band later). Patrice was signed to Motown and had a couple of Northern Soul "hits" and also co-wrote at least one great song with her sister, but mostly did backup vocals on a few albums. There are three versions of the theme song here. And one barely affiliated song by the Archies who ended up with a bigger hit, but was actually started because of Josie in the cartoons and comics.

Juliana Hatfield Family Pick

Having worked at an alternative music radio station I knew of and played Blake Babies and The Juliana Hatfield Three and followed some of her progress in her various bands and even was happy to see the cover of Josie and the Pussycats Theme song. Especially. I was always a big fan of the animated TV show and even the movie which had Kate Hanley (Letters To Cleo) singing the theme. So any version is good, but Hatfield and Donnelly do a bang up job. If you are a fan of these bands, make sure you listen to the Electric Light Orchestra, Olivia Newton-John and Police covers albums. They're pretty good. A track each from The I Don't Cares, Some Girls, and Minor Alps, plus a track with the Lemonheads and one with Evan Dando. The rest with her solo and her main two bands. Hopefully your favorite is here and plenty more to explore.

What's The Connection? Shadow 2

Part two of the Shadow connection. I liked copying so much that I am doing it again (for the whole story of Moozler and Shadow 1 click here). But more Shadow songs here and mostly not on either link. Another version of Nilsson's Shadow song, this time done with Frank and Sammy. Some fun old stuff, some BOC, Kissing The Pink, some country and even some prog. This one goes all over the place with no rhyme or reason until you remember the connection, but it's got some great songs on it. E.G. Daily also has a song here. With so many of Daily's songs on soundtracks can you tell me which one is your favorite? Give me the movie and the song. And the cover I still like, too. Look closely. What do you see?

St. Patrick's Day

Instead of a new connection for St. Patrick's Day or just a repost, I figured I would give a list links of previous posts for this day. So I guess they are all reposts.

This is probably the only time that clicking on the cover gets you no links.

What's The Connection? Eyes 3

I've done a few connections with Eyes. Mostly generic, but one about Blue Eyes. This has some colored eyes on it, but it's mostly generic. Several black eyes, a green eye, red eyes and even dirty eyes. Similar cover again and similar mix of genres. Some country, some rock , prog, crooners, new wave, dance and pop all mixed in for good measure. The numbering does not include the blue eyed connection, but all the generic ones.

Ides of March

The Ides of March was a band started with Jim Peterik (see that link for a family pick) but is also the 15th of March when it is thought that Julius Caesar died. Beware! Beware the Ides of March! Most people associate the band with Blood Sweat and Tears because they have the huge hit Vehicle that has that same sound. But they have a bunch of very good songs over their career, mostly because of Peterik who went on to be a great songwriter even after he left this band (on hiatus). All of the songs on this pick (except of the last one by Survivor - not Eye of the Tiger) are by The Ides Of March. Survivor is the other band Peterik was in and probably more well known and this track was not on the other compilation, so I thought I would throw it in here. Either way be careful today while you listen to this. Beware!

19 The Ides Of March - Roller Coaster
20 Survivor - High On You

What's The Connection? Beware 1

Today it's Pi day, so Happy Pi Day. Click that link to see previous Pi playlist. And tomorrow is the Ides Of March. So we are always told to Beware the Ides Of March, so to get you ready, Caesar, here are some songs with Beware in the title for this connection. Tons more of these are available, but just some of my first impressions to put in here. Nothing really to do with Caesar on here, except for maybe Colosseum. I put George Harrison and Concrete Blonde right next to each other. Same song, but different.after the first listen, skip the one you like least. I won't mind.

Erosion Control 2

Part two of the Erosion Control pick. Like volume one of Erosion Control from four days ago, it's just a playlist of covers of mostly rock songs, mostly in a rock style. Unlike the Facsimile comp which had more of a dance feel too it, this one is more rockish. Although the Dregs are rock, they are also jazz/fusion and maybe something else occasionally. A couple of tracks are kind of pop-rock. My favorite combination is the Scorpions doing a German version of a Sweet song and Sweet doing a Who Cover.

Erosion Control 2

20 Dixie Dregs - Kashmir
21 Belinda Carlisle - I Feel Free
22 Faith No More - War Pigs

What's The Connection? Questions 2

More of the Question connection. This is part two. Again, these are songs that have the word "Question" in the title. They aren't asking a question nor do they have any Question Marks in the title. Although that would be a good connection someday. I just haven't made it yet. Volume one of the Question connection was in February of this year. This one, like most WTC's goes all over the place in genres. Jade Warrior into Eazy E isn't a smooth transition and niether is Buffalo Springfield into Taylor Swift. But they all have the same theme so it will have to work. The cover is similar and I do love it.

Take It Easy Too

It's sort of the part two of the Take It Easy pick, but that is also part of another pick (see link at previous link) which is also related to Life Is Good pick. I did number this continuing from part one which is deceptively called Again. So it's confusing. Mostly songs about taking it easy, slowing down, making things simple, although the music is not as breezy as all that. I have another I will post later on, but I was ready to get this one up.

Take It Easy Too

21 Larry Williams - Slow Down

Surf Beat 3

You can see that this is the third volume of this compilation. The first Surf Beat was based on a mixtape I made based on a surf punk radio show I hosted. Which is a lot of base-ing. The second Surf Beat was a continuation of that. And this pick goes even farther. I haven't done the show in over a decade, but still love all the music. The hardest part of the actual show was playing so many songs in a row that were short and still keep the albums and singles in order and not mess them up as I was putting them away and still be able to talk and keep track of everything. Lots of prep work. This volume only has one song under sixty seconds, so it would have been less of a problem, but some of those shows were short song after short song. Hard to keep up. Imagine playing a bunch of Descendents and Angry Samoans all in a row. I stayed away from that as much as possible. Learn about carts in volume one.

Erosion Control 1

You are probably wondering about the title of this pick. I was making a mixtape of all covers and I was just going to call it rock blanket or something like that. But then as I was looking around, I noticed these blankets made up of rocks that they used for erosion control and I just loved it. It led me to all sorts of pictures of erosion control and I ended up with the one on the cover. I am sure you know all the originals of these songs, although some of you may have thought that at least two of these are the originals, but I assure you they are all covers. They are all written and performed originally by other bands. I have another pick of mostly rock covers that doesn't have any doubles with this on that I called Facsimile. With either have a fun journey looking up the original versions!

kuy

This mixtape is my pick of songs that I started with Fall Out Boy. I didn't add Billy Squier, but I wasn't liking it. In fact I was calling my attempts Yuk. I really didn't like the way it was going. I put it aside a bit and tried adding more stuff, moving things around. I added some Commodores and the Luke Bryan and it started coming together for me. The Comateens I liked since it matched up a bit with Fall Out Boy but was completely different. Same with Black Eyed Peas. It had a similar feel, but different. The Nickleback, Starship, Good Charlotte, Train and Blink 182 were a good counter balance and the rest fell in place. It became the opposite of Yuk, hence the title.

What's The Connection? Revolution 1

No national holiday to celebrating this connection about revolution. I probably should have waited to post it for Independence day or something like that, but I was excited about finishing it up. I started it because Butterboy posted a Revolution Rhythms compilation (I submitted this to his My Comps section as well) and one of the tracks he had on that comp started me here: Gil Scott-Heron. I put it in here as well. That started me on the argument over it being televised or not. Jeff Beck said yes. I put on a few of my other favorite Revolution titled songs including Nina Hagen, the Last Poets and World Party. I also included a great version of The Beatles Revolution (including both one and nine) done by soniclovenoise that has a great site that you should check out even if it's partially funded by Patreon (or onlyfans or something like that).

What's The Connection? Free 3

This continues the WTC of free songs. Songs with free in the title. I did a part 1 of free in November of last year. And part two wasn't that long ago, but in February. Part three includes a Les, a Lou, and two Lee's. The original by the Rolling Stones (the Soup Dragon cover featured in one of the previous connections). Some Pink Floyd and some Frank Zappa. Dan Hartman with a cover. And Jimi to start it all off. I figure any compilation with both Loretta Lynn and Prince is pretty good. But if you add Gil Scott-Heron and Queen it's a notch above good.

Slow Poof 4

Continuing from the first three volumes of Ambient Chill Slow Poof hits volume four. I really like this pick. Each volume it pretty good. It kind of encompasses a few different genres that all sound similar. I mean Mike Oldfield could be considered prog or pop prog. Thomas Dolby is pop new wave. What do you consider Bjork or Bryan Ferry? Anyway it's a good addition to this set of picks. I hope you like this latest addition.

What's The Connection? Because 2

This is part two of this connection and there will be another one coming for sure as well sometime down the future. The first Because connection was a bit ago in November. I made some stupid puns then, so I won't do that again. This time no Beatles, but there is a track from Paul McCartney and one from Julian Lennon. There is a polka song and a couple of country tunes as well as a tack completely opposite of that, by members of Wire as Dome. Also some Psychic TV and some R&B and almost disco. I hope you like this volume, too. Cover is similar.

fzz

Just another mixtape in the Pol's Pick department. I had a fuzzy song, so I decided on the title, but then as usual I kinda veered off. But I kept the title. I already had fizzy cover (sort of fuzz filled) and it was pop, so it stayed. Some of the artists might be considered poppy, but the song choices, less so. It's in bpm order and by energy, but it also was not a hard and fast of rule. So don't pay attention to anything I just wrote. It won't help you. Just suffice it to say, I had some rules, I didn't pay attention to any of them. Oh well.

What's The Connection? Mess 1

I've had a few around this connection over the last week or so. But this one is just a Mess. It's messy and it was messed up, but mostly it's just the mess. My favorite Mess title has to be the Rakes. It's perfect. I already had messing around with Jim Croce in the previous WTC that you had to look out for, but now there is Cupid and Bill to look out for too. Don't mess around with them or with the Best. David Johansen Family Pick

From the New York Dolls to his alter-ego Buster Poindexter and all his solo work, David Johansen always did things his way. This pick celebrating his life covers just a bit of his recorded output. I put on some New York Dolls, including one of my favorite cartoon themes. Some of his work on tribute albums and on a sampler or two. There are a couple of covers or so. Including the Kinks and T Rex. A track from his latin album, even one from his work with the Harry Smiths. It's got his biggest hit in both New York Dolls and as Buster Poindexter and some of my favorites across the board.
