Paisley 7

It's been awhile since I posted a new volume in this Paisley series. The last pick was a few years ago, but there have been tracks in my "holding area" ready to go. I have a few really long tracks I want to post too. A couple of longish tracks on this one, but not as long as the ones I have waiting. Someday I will get to them, when I get the guts to put out a three to four track playlist. If you want my definition of Paisley go see the other volumes. I explain the whole story. Just know I love this stuff. Did you notice the cover? There is a pattern...

What's The Connection? Brains 2

Four years ago, I made part one of this Brain connection and I am finally getting to part two. I had the bulk of these already waiting (well, let's be honest, if you have Hawkwind, PTV and Flaming Lips that could already be considered the "bulk" of it, but I had more than that). I added two songs and I was done. You won't guess which ones I added at the last moment, so I'll just tell you it was Green Day and Shays. So here you go, more washing and stuff on your scattered brain!

Brisket Beats 11

I know. I have been building on this series a lot. This pick of Brisket Beats is already at volume 11. It's got a good ebb and flow for a bar. Probably not for the beginning of the night, but as it has progressed. Still good energy, good places to get a drink, but also very danceable and it leaves you wanting to go back on the floor with your partner. I think this may be my second favorite volume so far. What do you think? Do you like Texas Soul?

Wild West

This is my pick of songs from westerns in TV and movies. Some are my favorite westerns, one arguably is a western but is SciFi. A couple of comedies. Most are covers and lots are surf versions. I won't commit to each version being the best version of that song, but I like them all. You'll notice a few spaghetti westerns mixed in here with a couple of tracks from Alex Cox's western (and none of them the Clash or Elvis Costello, even though those songs are great, too). And just a couple are very iffy, but too bad, I liked them. Also if you like this, you may like the other versions of Ghost Riders In The Sky I have here and this connection of Western Cowboys and Indians! Only one double.

Classical Gas (repost)

I posted this originally in 2022, but the link was bad and someone emailed and asked for a reup. So here it is: These are all songs with some sort of link to classical music. Elements of classical music, based on a classical song etc. Not just featuring violins or an orchestra on this pick. For instance the Toy Dolls play a classical song, but they do not sound like a classical orchestra (at all). There are plenty more that could be considered that I did not include like songs that are based on a classical melody, but were completely changed. I also added some songs that just mentioned classical artists: Like Play BachRock Me Amadeus, etc. I had several more that I could have added, but I limited it to what fits on a CD. So you miss Gazebo's I Like Chopin. Anyway there are tons more. Somewhere on  Butterboy's blog he has a multi-disc compilation with lots more. I made this one before I ever saw his and I tried not to look at his version as I was writing this, so it would be just what I remember when I put this together. After I heard Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time, I thought it was brilliant and predicted that a lot more bands would try to do songs like that. I was wrong. some had done it before and some after, but no rush to emulate that.

Classical Gas Pick

01 Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
02 Electric Light Orchestra - Rockaria!
03 Mason Williams - Classical Gas
04 Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Fanfare For The Common Man
05 Falco - Rock Me Amadeus
06 Jive Bunny - Rock'N'Roll Beethoven
07 BNM Corp - Bach to the Future
08 Village People - Play Bach
09 David Shire - Night On Disco Mountain
10 Walter Murphy - A 5th Of Beethoven
11 Toy Dolls - Toccata In Dm
12 B. Bumble & The Stingers - Bumble Boogie

18 Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade Of Pale
19 Tiësto - Adagio For Strings
20 Chuck Berry - Roll over Beethoven

After Hours 3

Hard to believe that I am on volume three of this pick. I really was originally thinking I might get lucky and do a couple of these. The more I hear, the more I like it though. I have been playing all the volumes in my house. Hopefully you are liking them too. I called it After Hours, because it reminds me of an after hour smoky jazz club. Makes me want to light up a cigar and drink a brandy. Go listen to the others in the series. This one features mostly female torch singers and a few AI females. Definitely not traditional.

After Hours 3

Almost Gosple 1

This is the first of a series of picks I'm making of almost gosple (notice how I spell it on the cover). I actually made a gospel playlist many years ago, but the new series feels fresh and fun. Sometime back then, I made that Gospel Brunch pick that captured this same spirit—uptempo tracks with big energy, revival vibes, and a mix of soulful grooves that make you want to stand up, clap, and move. This Almost Gosple playlist builds on that idea, blending classic soul, crossover hits, retro reimaginings, and uplifting sounds that aren't all strictly worship but carry that joyful, choir-driven punch. Those boxers in their blue robes sure look ready to belt out some harmonies—hope the choir director gave them the right pitch! Make sure you also look at the After Hours picks from a week ago or so! I'd love to hear what you think of all these.

Almost Gosple 1

01 Kirk Franklin - Wanna Be Happy

16 RetroFlow Soul - Purple Rain
17 Rhythm&Velvet - Somebody to Love (Gospel Soul)
18 The Flipside - Dancing Queen

Fill It Up To The Rim 3

I made part one years and years ago, then finally made part two of the Fill It Up To The Rim pick in 2023 and I thought I was pretty much done, but I kept my staging area open. I liked a several songs that didn't make it on previous versions and soon enough, here it is again, part 3! What's cool is I made one of the tracks in AI. Can you tell which one by listening? I think it sounds prett much like that era, but I have a dog in the fight. Go back and get the previous volumes. It's based originally on songs from the movie Paper Moon and that's still the inspiration for it, but it's moved beyond that. Mostly depression era hits (or Recovery era songs). I just like the sentiment. Do you have any favorites?

Fill It Up To The Rim 3

Funky Disco (Leopard) 5

A few really big hits and a few dig in your crate moments in this pick of funky disco. I have a few in the Leopard series and they are not all funk. Some just disco. I can't remember if I gave the story why it is called the leopard series, you'll have to check and see. If it's not there, ask me, I'll tell you. As I was compiling this one, I happened to notice that I had a small mini connection going in here. Eight or so of the tracks have "yourself" in the title. That's just happy serendipity. I'm pretty sure none of the others in this series have any. Just worked out that way. Not sure how many funky disco tracks have that in their title. Do you know of any others?

Funky Disco (Leopard) 5

77 Graham Central Station - Release Yourself
78 Parliament - Up for the Down Stroke
79 Beginning Of The End - Funky Nassau (Part 1)

Funky Disco (Leopard) 4

I like this whole series. It's funk but acknowledges the disco aspect of funk. It's a blurry line, but when you take funk's soul and put it on disco's dancefloor turbo, you get funky disco. And that's what I tried to pick. I like both funk and disco so when you get a little of both it's good. Some of the funk bands had disco versions of their songs, I tried to use those as I could fit them. I hope I am never done with this series.

Flic Your Bic 9

As you can see, this pick is an ongoing series. It has been awhile since I posted one up, however. You have to go back to August of 2023 to see the last Flic Your Bic. But worth clicking to get all of them if you like this sort of stuff (and I do). These are all songs that I would pull out my lighter (an app nowadays) for if I saw this song played live. So it's very subjective. I am sure you have a favorite that you would think is anthemic rock. See if it has already been posted before and if it hasn't, leave a comment with your choice.

What's The Connection? DJ

In honor of National Disc Jockey Day today, here is a connection of songs with DJ in the title. A couple of pretty well known tracks and a couple much less known, but all are pretty good. Play this today to celebrate your favorite DJ's, whether they can scratch, mix in key or not. More than a third of these have "Hey" in the title, too. As a DJ, I can tell you that "Hey, Mr. DJ" is not uncommon, not that any of us mind, I'm sure. I wonder how long it will be before a robot takes over for all DJ's? I'm sure eventually AI will figure out the best way to watch a crowd and get them dancing on cue and eventually when to MC. But for now, it's really not that efficient. One day, maybe...

I Have A Dream (repost)

This repost is actually on the day we celebrate MLK, but his actual birthday was four days ago. We've been in some weird times lately. We have bigots screaming for racism in the schools, school boards asking for segregation and pointing fingers of white supremacy. We almost seem more divided today than when Dr. King was alive. But we aren't. In reality, Dr. King asked when we would see people by the color of their deeds rather than the color of their skin. I think once we get past the political rhetoric we are closer together than we ever have been. I'm proud to live in the only country who fought a war to stop slavery and has been progressing under Conservative views to become more and more a country where color of the skin means less than your actions. This connection is about songs inspired by and about Martin Luther King.

RIYL Uptown Funk (repost)

This repost is from the first year I was posting on this site. I like this RIYL pick. I still play it a lot. It just sounds good. Here's what I originally said about it: You know how you are listening to a song and it it really feels like you've heard the song before? I was listening to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' hit Uptown Funk and it kept bothering me. Not so much like Blurred Lines and Got To Give It Up sounded like they would make a good mash up, but I knew I had that vibe and sound in my head. So I started searching and remembering. This is the playlist pick that I came up with. Pretty much this is my Recommended If You Like Uptown Funk. Let me know what you would recommend in the comments below.

This is a repost from one of my first posts on this site (in 2021) with updated links. Everyone loves an action movie. I sure do. Here are some scenes from some (then) recent action movies with the music they played through it. As you listen, remember how the scene went. I know that some of these tracks have been used in more than one movie, but these are the movies I associate them with. Do you have a favorite action sequence in a movie? What song is associated with it? By the way I make all the covers for these picks. Click on them.

Cocktail Hour 2 (repost)

Yesterday I posted part one of this pick, well, reposted it. I updated links because I was looking at it again and noticed that four years came and went and the links didn't stay current. But the music holds up. Here's what I wrote then about this: Part two of this pick. Cocktail hour is what I call it but it's appropriate for dinner or any other time you want some good music that you don't need to dance to. You can put it on for quiet moments like that or whatever. Go to sleep with this on in the background. That's nice, too. Now go check out the After Hours ones from a few days ago.

Cocktail Hour 1 (repost)

Since I just posted the After Hours picks the last couple of days, I thought I woud revisit this two volume set. The links were dead anyway, so I updated them here. I sort of quote what I wrote before: Some standards and a few not yet, but all are appropriate for cocktails or dinner. I like all of these. They are classics or classic sounding to me. I remember watching the movie Umbrellas Of Cherbourg as a kid and just loving Catherine Deneuve. It always stayed with me and is perfect for this pick. Sorry, but Bjork got in here twice. Once in her pre-Sugarcubes band Gling Glo and once solo much later. I just do love the sound of both tracks and Luktar-Gvendur was the inspiration for making this playlist. BTW, I really like the marbling technique for the cover background. Fun to do!

After Hours 2

Yesterday’s pick set the scene — tonight’s keeps the lights low and the room quieter. The air feels thicker, the piano slower, the bass heavier, like it’s learned something from the silence. This one leans deeper into that after-midnight calm — where the smoke curls, the clock forgets, and every note feels like it’s playing just for you. Several AI tunes made the cut again (that was the point after all), but the mood stays human — worn, warm, and wide awake at 2 a.m.

After Hours 1

When the lights fade and the last glass clinks, the real music begins. This pick drifts through a 1950s saloon haze — slow, smoky jazz wrapped in barroom quiet. Sparse piano and brushed snares sway around a thumping upright bass, while a low baritone croon leans close, all grit and midnight warmth. At the mic, Zero Sugar’s own boxer — no howls, just bark and heart — croons the kind of tunes made for the hour after the night ends. A couple of AI tunes here, but the rest...

Brix Picks

Go back a couple of weeks to see more by The Fall and Brix (Adult Net) and of course Mark E Smith, but today's pick is focused on Brix E Smith-Start and her non-Adult Net work. And not everything, I didn't include anything beyond her stuff with the Fall and the Extricated. There's more than enough here and it really gels together. The post Adult Net stuff as Brix and the Extricated sounds very much like The Fall without Mark. No surprise since there are old members of that band recruited to play with her. I like this stuff! And her contributions to The Fall make a lot more sense hearing it away from Mark and makes her case (from her book) that she did a lot more than she was allowed to get credit for. From one of her early tracks with the Fall through all her Extricated work, this samples much of it.

Let me know if you like any of them more than any others or what you would like to surf to? Did I miss any other good ones? There are so many.

Brisket Beats 10

When I first moved here, the flags on every street suggested a very specific kind of conservative world, but the reality was a pleasant surprise of neighbors from every country and religion living right alongside them. This final Pick of Brisket Beats reflects that unique Texas blend—fiercely proud of tradition yet incredibly open to diversity. It’s that authentic Southern hospitality that lets soul, country, and norteño share the same space without missing a beat. Our pride isn't about exclusion; it's about sharing a sound that belongs to everyone. Have you ever had an experience with Southern hospitality? Tell me about it.

A little bit country in there mixed up with several Spanish speaking songs, rancheras and cumbias for sure, some western swing and some soul. All of it with roots in or at least some connection with Texas. Check out the previous volumes and of course there will be more. I think it's perfect for the New Year. You got two from Billy Gibbons (one with ZZ Top and the other a Texas Tornados cover). Hard to get more Texas than that!

Brisket Beats 2

Look at yesterday's post for the whole story or click on Brisket Beats to see the updates. But this pick is bar dancing and drinking music. It's designed specifically. Every song has a reason for being here. You'll notice that there are multi-lingual songs and that all the songs or artists have a Texas connection. This area of Texas (by which I mean almost all of Texas) has a lot of pride in being Texan. Even people who move here end up being proud of it. I have seen that a little in most places in the world, but not to the extent that it is here. And there is good reason for it. I always tell people I wasn't born in Texas, but I came as soon as I could. The music tells a story (if you'll listen). And it's made for couples to have a night out with each other (or to meet someone.) There are pauses here and there for a reason. BTW, if you are a bar and are interested in knowing how this can help you increase business let me know (I'll explain it all to you.)

Brisket Beats 1

I already posted a Brisket Beats or Texas Soul comp in my vs picks. But this is more comprehensive. This series will have some overlap with that first one, but since it's almost 200 songs wide, there is a whole lot more. I started this one because I was looking at the special DJ nights that some bars were putting on all around the world (and there are some good ones see the vs link above) and how lackluster the ones in my area were. I tried to come up with something programmed as an entire regular night. It's not just music, it's an event designed for a bar. Although you willonly get the music portion here, I designed it to maximize profit in a bar by giving people what they want and need to drink and dance all night for a specific kind of diverse multi-cultural crowd that is fairly conservative and has pride for Texas. It's interesting. I designed everything from music to promotions, even commercial tie-ins to products and local businesses. It was fun. For now, I'm just gonna share some of the music over the next week or so.
