What's The Connection? Free 2

I don't remember the movie much, but I remember the feeling when I saw it. I was younger and I saw it on TV. The movie was Born Free and the title track of the song as done by Matt Monro is on this part two of the Free Connection. I did part one some time ago (see Free volume one here). I probably should have waited for a special freedom oriented day to arrive to post this, but I have been feeling freer since January anyway and it was there just waiting. I like that this volume of the compilation is bookended by two long very cool free songs and a bunch of other great songs inbetween. You can't get more apart than Funkadelic and Lynyrd Skynyrd and yet it totally works. I have another eight hours of free songs and eventually I will post another one. They just aren't finalized yet. Similar cover. Isn't it nice.

What's The Connection? Bullets 3

Not much to say on this third volume of this Bullet Connection. This one is a bit more on the rock side, although there are a couple not that way. So add this to the others and then compare and contrast. Not much else to say. Punk, rock, R&B, and then some Bill Laswell and even some Prince. Enjoy it. This is the last for awhile.

Rock, Freak, Boogie 3

One more of this pick. Disco is always one of my favorites and this Rock, Freak, Boogie pick was fun to make originally and now it is already volume 3 of it. I got a several recommendations on the previous one: Rock, Freak, Boogie 2. Some of those are in this one. I always listen to recommendations and take them into consideration for future volumes. There are some good ones here. I hope you like them. There is a great 15 minute version Alexander Robotnick's Obsession. Look it up. I edited out the beginning of Isaac Hayes song, because it works better in the mix. The Isley Brothers also have a disco 12 inch version that's very good.

What's The Connection? Twilight 2

You'll have to go back a few days or so to find part one of this Twilight connection. A few longer tracks on this volume and also some really cool ones. SPK, Lou Reed, Shnazz and the Cornell Hurd Band!? Throw in a little Ministry and Robyn Hitchcock and next thing you know Bill Laswell shows up. What's The Connection? Mess Around 1

I was listening to a music program and they played Jim Croce (who I like) and was thinking of messy songs. So this connection started because of big bad Jim. But as I was thinking of all the songs with mess in the title I realized I could get around to refining it more, so I did. I had more to use, but also made a Big Mess of it in the end. Sorry, but not sorry. More songs messin' with your (and my) sanity coming in question. Either way this is fun. Even if there are doubles of songs on this playlist. The cover is messed up as well.

pfs

Another one of my three letter mixtapes. This pick is all around the 140-150 bpm range. Seems pretty fast sometimes. But a few don't seem as fast as the others. The songs go from new wave to dub. A couple are fairly well known tracks and some are fairly well known artists with deeper cuts or weird remixes. Human League, Eurythmics, Front 242 and Depeche Mode are telling you these aren't our mainstream mixes. The Flying Lizards are better known for their robotic vocal type songs, but I like their lesser known dub album. It's got some cool tracks on it, including this one. Monaco and Klark Kent might bring up comparisons to New Order and the Police and for good reason. They are part of the family picks for those bands. And btw, the title has nothing to do with an insurance company.

pfs

01 Underworld - Shudder-King Of Snake
02 The Cure - Bananafishbones
03 The Flying Lizards - Lime And Salt
04 The Fibonaccis - Purple Haze
05 Human League - The Sound Of The Crowd (Riton Re-Rub)
06 The Jesus And Mary Chain - Kill Surf City
07 Eurythmics - Grown Up Girls (Hot Tracks)
08 Bill Laswell Meets Style Scott - Emergency At The Plant
09 Front 242 - Religion (bass under siege mix)
10 Monaco - I've Got A Feeling
11 Klark Kent - Love Lessons
12 Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead
13 Jah Wobble - Car Ad Music 3
14 Depeche Mode - Barrel Of A Gun (Underworld Hard Mix)
15 KMFDM - Never Say Never (Edit)

What's The Connection? Questions 1

On some social media site that I haven't been kicked off yet, someone posed the question of naming songs that asked a question. That's not this playlist. This connection is songs that have Question in the title (except for the  last song which is the first song I thought of even though it does not follow the rules.) It's hard to name songs with an actual question mark as that screws up all sorts of searches and file protocols, so I spell out q-u-e-s-t-i-o-n (with no dashes). I have to remember to search using the letters instead of the punctuation. And just for your information Chicago, Balloon Farm and Depeche mode were the ones I thought of right after Question Mark and the Mysterians. I do have a a few more volumes pretty much ready to go, but I am waiting.

What's The Connection? Questions 1

01 Clyde McPhatter - A Lover's Question

EHR

I was listening to some of these bands and thinking that I like these early rock songs that sound like the beginning of metal. Some were heavy and others not quite there and wondering if there were some tracks I could pick from contemporaries that weren't the ones I always turned to and make a mixtape. So a mix of "hits" and deeper album cuts but that made me feel the vibe I was going for. Listening to it in this order, I was struck by how cool it is. Hopefully you like it too. A couple of bands I repeated, just because I wanted to: The Who, The Easybeats, The Kinks. I thought about making this be all bands with names that start with "The", but I wanted to include a few songs that didn't fit the mold. Oh well. It's heavy enough.

02 Moby Grape - Omaha
03 The Easybeats - Sorry

mdc

I was looking around while making another compilation and found some songs I wanted to use because they were cool, but they didn't fit the pick I was working on. It happens a lot. So I dump them in a folder to use later. I call this one mdc (mostly deep cuts) because most are not even singles let alone hits. But a few were added because I was reminded of them while listening. For instance, the Queen track reminded me a lot of Billy Squier. The Hall & Oates track reminded me of Devo. A couple of the tracks I had completely forgotten about because they were on an album that had one or more other amazing tracks on it that I loved. Skinyard I had because I love that version of one of my favorite Beatles tracks. Anyway, I hope you like what I picked for this mixtape.

Funk You 3 (repost)

It's not really fair to call this pick a repost because I never posted it like this. Part three of this Funky Rock and Roll mixtape is another hour of funk in rock over several decades. See yesterday for more. As you listen to the funkiness, you will understand. Or you won't. This series is for me. If you like it, it's a bonus, but I like it so that's why it's here.

Funk You 2 (repost)

This is sort of a repost. Originally volume one of this pick was a cassette. Then it became a CD and then a playlist. This second one was similar, but a more rock and roll version of the series. A rockin funk mixtape. But it was never really a cassette. It skipped that part and just went through the last steps. A little bit of old Funkadelic which was kind of rockin' anyway and then some other stuff through the decades that also rocked but was funky. It started ta new life, so look for volume three tomorrow, Enjoy it or if you don't, Funk You.

Beatles Silly Love Songs

I was listening to the double LP by the Beatles called Love Songs which is quite good and a Ballads compilation from 2002 and started wondering about my favorite ballads and love songs from the Beatles together and solo. So I put this pick together. Since it is mostly love songs and I did include Wings Silly Love Songs hit and because it's Valentine's Day, I named it like I did. All the songs must have "must" in the title and "be" and "love", of course. Until or unless you are in love, you never say it must be love, but once you are, it's obvious that it Must Be.

Funk You 1 (repost)

This pick is sort of a repost. I've always been a fan of Funk. And was happy that during the 80's and 90's some alternative bands were incorporating it into their musical output. I made at the time a couple of cassettes with some old and new funk. I translated that pick into CD playlists. Here is volume 1 or cassette one but better quality than before. This pick of mine was also posted on another great blog site by ButterBoy. Check him out! Either way, I liked mixing the old with the new funk. I haven't seen the Stone Funkers anywhere since I got their CD decades ago (from the band direct), but I like their album. I also like having a George Clinton cover and George (and Parliament/Funkadelic) on the same tape. Here you get Bop and Fopp and Slop all in one. The original tape was all red with the funky lettering all hand done, this is designed, but still looking cool. Volume two will be in a couple of days.

What's The Connection? Bullets 1

Read yesterday's intro to hear the story behind this connection. As I said, Bullet to the Bone is on here. And then the U2 I talked about. The rest are my favorite bullet songs. How could you have a WTC like this without Lynyrd Skynyrd or 10cc? And I love the Pete Wingfield. The Nate Smith is probably the most recent of all the tracks. I have two more of these pretty much close to being ready, so they will be coming soon.

What's The Connection? Twilight 1

I was in the car and listening to the radio. Which means I was probably not driving, since if I control the music it's probably one of my playlists streaming through bluetooth. And the DJ announced that some Dutch band was going to be next. I guessed it would be Golden Earring, which it was, but it wasn't Radar Love it was Twilight Zone. Which I figure should be called Bullet To The Bone, but it isn't. Either way I started thinking of Bullet songs and thought of U2 and then I went to Twilight which is U2's song that seems like it's about pedophelia (listen to the lyrics). And then all the songs about the TV show, including one of my favorites from Manhattan Transfer and came up with this list (and another one coming soon) as well as a Bullet connection also coming soon (and yes I will put Golden Earring on that one as well.) So enjoy part one of this playlist that has nothing to do with vampires that sparkle in the sun.

Beatles Blue Meanies

This is a completely different pick for this site. In fact, it isn't my pick. I found this pick somewhere on the internet and for the life of me I can't remember where I got it. I remember that I was looking at several of the Beatles "What If" posts all over. Mostly looking at what possiblities there could have been if the Beatles didn't break up. But finding a whole slew of other what ifs. This one was about Yellow Submarine and if they had made it into a real album instead of just the soundtrack and using singles from around that time plus the songs that were actually on the album. That way you didn't have the George Martin side at all and you could add some other tracks to make a really strong Beatles album. When I first saw it I was intrigued so I assembled it from the notes and put it aside. Over the years I listened to it many times and I liked it. It needed a cover, so I made one. I looked for the person who made up this fake album and can't find them. If you know, leave it in the comments. I imagine this coming out between Sgt. Peppers and the White Album.

This is the only one in the Eagles Family pick that doesn't have any Eagles tracks on it. It also doesn't have his track with Stevie Nicks and no guest spots with Bob Seger. It could have. More of the Eagles Family pick, today it's Glenn Frey. Probably has the second most hits outside of the Eagles, but if it was just for his participation in Beverly Hills Cop, he'd be great. This pick has only one geust spot: with Bob Seger (who had probably every Eagle member on one track or another). The rest is solo stuff and Eagles tracks that he was featured on or wrote. Leadon, Felder, Meisner, Schmit Pick

More of the Eagles Family pick. This time it is Bernie Leadon, Don Felder, Randy Meisner and Timothy B Schmit. All, obviously, in the Eagles at one point or another and doing more or less outside the Eagles. Felder probably did the most out these four, with a few hits on his own. All did some guest spots in various bands. Look up these songs to get more info if you want to separate it further. I also put one Eagles track in here to balance it out. I'll have more for the remaining members solo coming soon.

Joe Walsh Guest Guitar Pick

More and in a different direction than yesterday's pick. This Joe Walsh is all about his guest guitar spots. No Eagles tracks here and only one solo track which also was an Eagles track. I only used one Ringo Starr track but he played with the All Starrs often (now being related and all). Some I was less aware of until I started this compilation. which track were you the most surprised by? Listen closely, you'll hear the Walsh guitar on each one. BTW, the cover is based on a photo of him at a Crossroads concert twenty years ago. I love the shot.

A couple of the tracks are also on the Family pick, but you won't mind, because they are great. Do listen to all the albums though, they are really extraordinary. Eagles Family Pick 2

Some time ago, I posted the Eagles Family Pick volume 1 and said I would post a followup volume. I forgot to post it. I had compiled it and just never archived and posted it. So here it is. Each track on this pick features at least one Eagle on it. Some feature several of them. Everything from backing vocals to playing instruments on guest spots. And of course some solo bits from many of them. I also included two Eagles tracks. An earlier one and a later one. Later I will include at least one solo pick of members to round out the family pick. I love the family pick cover. Look closely to see which friends joined them.

Rock, Freak, Boogie 2 (repost)

New links for the repost of this pick.

Die Antwoord isn't disco or funk, but I like it anyway.) So that is the connection today. Yesterday was volume 1. Enjoy and click on the cover I designed. Similar to the other volumes of disco I've posted.
