Dave Alvin family

Most people have no idea that I am originally from Los Angeles, California. Although I did not know Dave Alvin or his brother or any of these associated bands in this pick from encounters in that area, it's hard to not cheer for that whole scene. I had a couple of times when I got to meet Dave Alvin (none in Southern California.) I did get to drink moonshine with him and a couple of the guys from X in Austin. That was probably the most fun, The other times were interviews. Anyway, this is not all of his projects and side projects, but it's a good sampling. And it does get the bulk of his most popular songs, if not always the version that was the most well known. It gives you something to search for. I put this in my Rockabilly section at home, but it's that and Roots and Americana all at once.

  1. Thanks! I've just now downloaded the mix and haven't played it yet, but your notes to this one are particularly interesting to me. I'm in the Los Angeles area myself, having moved here (from England) in 1976, when I was about 17. So, starting in the early 80s, I went to numerous performances by the Blasters, and X, and various individuals associated with those "families." I will say that, while I certainly enjoy the work of Dave Alvin and appreciate his talent as a songwriter, I absolutely love the work of his brother Phil (though there's admittedly way less of it, and though it's all admittedly covers). I guess the bottom line here is that I really like the older forms of American music which Phil focuses on (and in which he is a true authority), though it's also the case that I especially like fingerstyle guitar =- and also that I like Phil's voice! In any case, I'm glad you've posted this collection, which not only looks to be a nice collection in its own right but which also rings some bells for me, bringing to mind several personal associations.

    1. I always think that I DON'T like Americana, but I am constantly reminded that I actually love it. Glad you are enjoying this (even if you like Phil better). I do like Phil but it's harder to get something different and interesting for him since it just would be a greatest hits. I thought about doing a greatest hits one with just the Blasters and a couple of Phil's tracks but there's so much that would overlap this one and little that you couldn't put on this one.

  2. Thanks a bunch (from someone who's never been to LA, or Austin either for that matter).
